Biolidics, Medtecs fall amid heavy trading post H1 resultsShares of Catalist-listed medical technology (medtech) players Biolidics and Medtecs International fell on Monday morning, after both companies announced their H1 financial results on Friday following the close of trading. No married deals were recorded in early trade for either counter, according to ShareInvestor data. As at 9.41am on Monday, Biolidics had dipped below 52-week-low levels to 21 Singapore cents, down 22.2 per cent or six cents after 2.1 million shares changed hands. The medtech company last Friday reported a S$3 million loss for the six months ended June 2021, widening from the S$0.1 million loss in the year-ago period. This came amid a " highly competitive market" with a growing supply of antigen and antibody test kits, said the firm in its results filing. Meanwhile, protective gear maker Medtecs fell 17.9 per cent or 22.5 Singapore cents to a year-to-date low of 57.5 cents as at 9.30am on Monday, with some 10.5 million shares traded. Medtecs on Friday reported that its H1 profit had halved year on year to US$19.1 million from US$38.9 million, as revenue fell on lower sales of personal protective equipment and face masks after a build-up of stocks by most of its customers in the previous year. As at 10.10am on Monday, Biolidics had inched up marginally to trade at 22 cents, down 4.5 cents or 16.7 per cent. Shares of Medtecs recovered slightly to trade 16 Singapore cents or 20 per cent lower at 64 cents.   |

Biolidics H1 loss widens to S$3mMedtech company Biolidics posted a S$3 million loss for the six months ended June 2021 - widening from the S$0.1 million loss in the year-ago period - amid a " highly competitive market" with a growing supply of antigen and antibody test kits.Group revenue for the period tumbled 91 per cent to S$0.6 million, from S$7.1 million in H1 FY2020. Basic loss per share stood at 1.14 Singapore cents, compared to 0.04 cent in H1 FY2020. " As the Covid-19 pandemic unfolded since the start of 2020, there has been a significant increase in manufacturers involved in the development of Covid-19 diagnostic test kits as well as antigen and antibody test kits. Hence, the growing supply of antigen and antibody test kits has led to a highly competitive market with intense price competition," the company said in a business update on Friday. Sales of Covid-19 related products brought in S$0.4 million in H1 FY2021, compared to S$6.4 million in the year-ago period. Apart from its business in infectious diseases, Biolidics is also engaged in cancer diagnostics and providing laboratory services. For H1 FY2021, revenue from its cancer diagnostics services fell to S$0.13 million, while that from laboratory services increased to S$80,000, up from S$7,000 in the year-ago period. On its upcoming plans, Biolidics said it wants to provide testing applications at different infection stages of Covid-19. One area it is focused on, is developing a neutralising antibody Covid-19 test kit embedded with technology licensed from the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (or A*Star). It also plans to broaden its market presence in Asia on the cancer diagnostics front. Shares of Biolidics closed flat at S$0.27 on Friday.   |

Biolidics reaches settlement with biochip partner Sysmex after IP dispute

CATALIST-LISTED medtech firm Biolidics on Monday reached an " amicable settlement" with Japan biochip partner Sysmex Corporation " without any admission to liability" , putting paid to previous disputes over intellectual property (IP).

Biolidics first served a letter of demand to Sysmex in October last year, alleging that the latter had breached IP obligations under a collaboration agreement struck in 2016 for the joint development of biochips. Sysmex then filed a counterclaim against Biolidics, alleging that Biolidics had breached its obligations under a feasibility study agreement entered into between both parties in August 2014. Biolidics then issued a notice of arbitration to Sysmex in November.

The settlement agreement on Monday will " fully settle all matters" , including Sysmex' s counterclaim against the company, said Biolidics in a bourse filing.

Its board is also of the view that the settlement is in the best interests of the group, it said. The settlement is not expected to have a material impact on the financial performance of the group for the current financial year ending December 31, 2021
