Yes on shorting OCBC. Soon local banks also need to downsize as companies r closing down or moving away.

Fintech is one of the risk. It could be double edge sword.
Fintech companies not competitors, says OCBC?s Samuel Tsien By Goola Warden / theedgemarkets.com.sg | September 23, 2016 : 4:43 PM MYT Printer-friendly versionSend by emailPDF version Translated by Google Translator: Select Language ▼ SINGAPORE (Sept 23): Samuel Tsien, CEO of Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp, does not worry about fintech companies chipping away at the hold OCBC has on its customers. ?We are always digitally discerning, and we are not distracted by fintech companies,? Tsien says during a recent interview with The Edge Singapore. Indeed, Tsien sees them as a beacon of sorts, guiding the big banks towards technology investments that ultimately further strengthen their position. ?The fintech companies, to us, are really facilitators, to make us even bigger, and to bring us even closer to the customer. So, in that sense, we do not necessarily view them as competitors,? Tsien says. ?They have certain capabilities that we can make use of in order to help us grow even closer to the customer and grow even bigger.? The result of all this is that Singapore?s big banks have been engaging promising fintech players rather than trying to squash them, and providing them with valuable access to data and customers to determine whether their ideas really work. In February, Tsien launched an initiative called ?The Open Vault at OCBC? to support fintech companies in the prototyping and deployment of their ideas. Some 250 companies volunteered their ideas under The Open Vault?s recent accelerator programme, which ended on Aug 8. Of these, eight have been chosen to work with OCBC on pilot studies. ?[The Open Vault] is the major entity that deals with outside parties that are able to offer solutions to us that we need, but do not have the time or the speed to deliver to our customers,? Tsien explains. Specifically, OCBC is hunting for suitable fintech ideas that it can adopt in the fields of wealth management, credit and financing, insurance and cybersecurity. Could some of these new technologies ultimately enable new players to prise certain services away from the big banks? Will regulation help the interlopers rather than hinder them? Find out more in our cover story, ?Digitally discerning?, in The Edge Singapore (week of Set 26), available now at newsstands. |

Haha, the very reason why it failed to garner the entire GE share holdings is the same reason why anyone trying to acquire OCBC will probably not succeed - it' s the perception (n a lot of truth, in my view) that the offer for GE was derisory.  In any case good to have three local bks, at least for healthy competition.  Oh yes, abt properties.  They recently just sold a pair of shophses in Bt Pasoh I recall.  Who knows how many more such ' hidden' properties they are holding - n seems carried  at way below mkt px.  So, that' s it  -  will even a 25SGD/share be sufficiently attractive to entice all minorities?

Its unlikely that OCBC will be acquired....too strong major shareholders....and not many can afford. Not forgeting there are still a lot of hnder value in OCBC....still own some nice properties. Another possibility ( tot tough) is their wish to privatise GE.....done that before but fail. Amt of cash and advantage for it to privatise. Anyway, its current profolio and 4% dividend is a good stock to hold. Agree 10 is not an issue...only when. :)) Happy investing.

Thats' the reason the dividend is important. Got some return during the holding time. I also waiting, though very slim chance, that OCBC will be acquired. :)

I believe this one has a lot of hidden value.  If keep holding, I' m quite sure it' d go back to 10SGD.  Qn is when?  Ask Ah Chye when STI will even go back to 3k or higher.  Then maybe good chance.  I believe one reasone for OCBC' s apparent lethargy is the perception that GE is not up to speed at present.  If they turn that ard,  I think will chiong.  DYODD as always.

my ocbc average around $8.61. I am okay the price stay that way, as long as the dividend is intact.
