US-Japan collusion on nuke wastewater disgusting: Global Times editorial Apr 13, 2021 10:05 PM The Japanese government made a final decision on Tuesday to discharge contaminated radioactive wastewater from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant into the sea. This is a shameful decision. Once implemented, the move will pose a long-term threat to the ecology of the entire Pacific Ocean and regions beyond. The fundamental reason why Japan dares to do so is that it has been indulged by the US. On Tuesday morning (Beijing time), US Secretary of State Antony Blinken even tweeted, " We thank Japan for its transparent efforts in its decision to dispose of the treated water."   How magical this gratitude is! It' s like conducting a funeral in the way a wedding is being held.  Imagine what would happen if other countries do the same thing.    The attitude of Western public opinion would be fiercer. The US tactic - defending those who belong to its own faction and attack those who don' t - has reached a peak. It has also played the card of double standards too much and has called disgrace an honor, treated evil as being responsible. It is a shame of modern human civilization. An apparent reason for the US to adopt its current attitude is that Japan is geographically far away from it. If Japan discharges the wastewater near the US, Washington will surely show another stance. But the US may have miscalculated. With the world' s strongest currents along the coast of Fukushima, radioactive materials could spread to the entire Pacific Ocean. It is purely illusionary and shortsighted for the US to think it could detach itself from the possible crisis.  |

Japan&rsquo s &lsquo low credibility&rsquo causes concerns among Asian countries on Fukushima nuclear wastewater release Apr 13, 2021 11:13 PM Although Japan is trying to convince the world that Fukushima radioactive water is safe to be dumped into the sea, and the US even thanked Japan' s " transparent efforts," Asian countries including China and South Korea, as well as some civil groups in Japan and international organizations are still expressing their concerns and strong opposition, due to Japanese government' s low credibility in handling the nuclear issue and the unpredictable ecological risks. This case has proven that the so-called " rules-based international order" crowed by the US is actually a lie which only serves US strategic interests but ignores the concern of other countries, even US allies like South Korea, experts said. China and other Asia-Pacific countries which will be immediately affected by the radioactive water release need to work together to make sure the release is under international supervision, and reserve the right to sue Japan according to relevant international laws once Tokyo' s act causes damages and pollution, analysts noted.    But Greenpeace East Asia had revealed to the Global Times that the ALPS (Advanced Liquid Processing System) pumping and filtration system of TEPCO does not remove tritium or carbon 14, and also does not remove all of the other radioactive isotopes such as strontium-90, iodine 129, cobalt-16.    Analysts and environmental groups raised doubts over whether TEPCO can eventually clean up the Fukushima radioactive water before it discharges into the ocean. Is TEPCO and the Japanese government still trustworthy given its frequent stains and scandals in the past?  Since 1977, TEPCO has been accused of falsifying data and concealing safety risks in 199 periodic inspections of its 13 reactors at Fukushima Daiichi as well as Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear plants. As a country with special influence over Tokyo, the US flagrantly supported and even thanked Japan' s decision, that was widely slammed by the international community and Japanese. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken tweeted on Tuesday that " We thank Japan for its transparent efforts in its decision to dispose of the treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi site." US allies in the region like South Korea and some ASEAN countries believe the US is not a responsible power and its " rule-based international order" has failed to take care of the concerns of the region, Lü said, adding that China and other partners with similar concerns should cooperate to keep the pressure on Japan and safeguard their interests through legal means.    |

Western media absent as Tokyo is about to dump radioactive water Apr 12, 2021 09:04 PM The Japanese government " is poised to" release polluted water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean, according to Kyodo News. Such an extremely irresponsible act has been strongly criticized by China and other neighboring countries of Japan. However, most major Western media outlets have remained silent on Japan' s decision that will influence health of hundreds of millions of people. For many Western elites, it seems that their so-called environmental concern is ideologically biased. Environmental protection is just an ideological tool for them to suppress rival countries. Dumping nuclear wastewater into the Pacific Ocean will cause infinite harm to the entire human race and the ecological environment on which the world depends. " It is a move that will have serious, long-term consequences for communities and the environment, locally and much further afield," according to report from environmental rights organization Greenpeace.  Japan' s neighboring countries, including China and South Korea, will be the first to suffer from the serious pollution and it is also difficult for Western countries to stay aloof from the affair. As the world' s oceans are connected, more countries will also be harmed by the nuclear wastewater sooner or later.  Such an apparently wicked act has not been jointly condemned by Western countries, and mainstream Western media which hold great international discourse power have not criticized Tokyo on a large scale.  It' s a sharp contrast to the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. The Soviet Union was heavily attacked by the Western media back then and the West also used the disaster to instigate anti-Soviet Union sentiment. Today, Japan' s radioactive wastewater may remain dangerous for thousands of years and may even cause human DNA changes, according to Greenpeace. The Western media' s collective silence at this time has formed a sharp contrast https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202104/1220876.shtml |
