I did a bit of digging into Starhub' s financial statement to investigate why despite a marginal rise in its 1Q 17 total revenue of 0.2% over 1Q16, its net profit for 1Q 17 has fallen by 21.3% over 1Q 16. The fall in net profits is due to firstly an increase in operating expenses by 2.6% for 1Q y-o-y. The amount of increase in operating expenses work out to be around $12.8m. Secondly, there is also a loss of other income from operations which is around $12.3m for 1Q 17 y-o-y. Thirdly, there is also an increase in finance expenses of around $2m for 1Q 17 over 1Q16. All these amounts such as $12.8m, $12.3m and $2m may seem small but everything that works against the economics of a business such as increase in operating expenses, loss of operating income and increase in finance expenses adds up to result in this case of a decline in 21.3% in the net profit of Starhub despite a marginal increase in total revenue for 1Q 17. Another thing worth noting is that Starhub' s total service revenue which consists of revenues from mobile service, pay TV, enterprise fixed and broadband has declined by 1% for 1Q 17 over 1Q 16. The marginal increase in total revenue is due to slightly higher revenue from sales of equipment which offsets the marginal decrease in total service revenue. If we look at this trend in the revenues of Starhub, even if it is currently remaining resilient in maintaining its revenues, it is still not doing well enough. If Starhub cannot grow its revenues much anymore at a good growth rate and instead need to fork out higher maintenance capex going forward to compete with other competitors including TPG, the 4th incoming telco operator, it is going to further strain their balance sheet. Incidentally, their current balance sheet is being weakened with the increase in borrowings over the past year from $687.5m to now $987.5m. This increase in borrowings is partly to satisfy its capital expenditure due to securing the new spectrum to keep up with upgrading its network and competition. Watch out further for future developments of Starhub to see how its revenues, operating incomes, net incomes, balance sheet, cash flows and various margins fare rest of this year and next year when the 4th telco TPG comes onto the scene. |

StarHub loses 11,000 payTV subscribers in Q1Customers are turning to cheaper alternatives. If there' s one thing StarHub has to worry about, it would be its payTV and broadband segments. According to DBS Group Research, StarHub' s payTV subscriber base declined by 11,000 during 1Q17. This translated to a 7% revenue decline in the segment. " This brought 12-month subscriber loss to 41,000 as customers churned to the cheaper alternatives," DBS Group Research noted. Meanwhile, StarHub' s broadband subscriber base also declined by 3,000 during 1Q17 or around 1% of its subscriber base after being stable for a while.

Well drop 20% is normal due to the economy now. As long they still making a profit i dont see why share price is falling. And long ago when they release the news of 0.04 dividend the price has been long ago adjusted. Be positive =) |

If m1 is acquired, the buyer will want the new m1 to earn more revenue. With the competitive market, I doubt they will make it otherwise m1 will not be the smallest today therefore it is wise not to acquire m1 but take a strategic stake in StarHub instead the second Largest Telco in Singapore which is now diversifying its revenue stream | ||||
