x 0   x 0  Alert Admin	ComfortDelGro JV wins contract to operate rail services in Auckland FRI, AUG 27, 2021 - 8:19 AM UPDATED FRI, AUG 27, 2021 - 10:36 AM MAINBOARD-LISTED ComfortDelGro Corporation  ComfortDelGro was awarded a contract worth S$1.13 billion to operate rail services in Auckland, New Zealand, the transport operator said in a statement on Friday. The group will operate the rail services through Auckland One Rail (AOR), its 50 per cent-owned joint venture with Australian rail operator and maintenance company UGL Rail Services. The contract, lasting for an initial term of eight years with the opportunity for further extensions, will begin on Jan 16, 2022. ComfortDelGro' s managing director Yang Ban Seng called the deal a " milestone" as it is the group' s first rail operation outside of Singapore and its maiden entry into New Zealand. ComfortDelGro has been operating commuter rail services in Singapore through its listed subsidiary, SBS Transit, since 2003. AOR will be responsible for passenger train operations across the network. This includes providing drivers, developing timetables, operating and maintaining stations, security, customer service, and protecting revenue. The Auckland Rail network, with a pre-Covid-19 annual ridership of 21 million, is the largest in New Zealand. It has four lines and 42 stations, as well as 72 three-car electric multiple unit (EMU) trains and eight diesel multiple unit trains, which will grow to 44 stations and 95 EMU trains when Auckland' s new City Rail Link opens in 2024. ComfortDelGro has also been looking to expand in the  rail sector internationally  besides New Zealand.  Previously, it said it had invited transport operator SMRT Corporation to tender for a rail project in Sydney, Australia  together with UGL Rail Services. The scope of the contract, for a new metro railway line connecting  Greater Western Sydney and the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport, will include maintenance works and  installation of tracks, mechanical, signalling, and electrical systems. The unsuccessful tenderer was Aka Tangata Ltd (ATL) a consortium comprising Transdev NZ Ltd, John Holland NZ Ltd and CAF NZ Ltd. The existing Auckland passenger rail contract has been in place since 2004 and, following several extensions, expires in March 2022. AT chairwoman Adrienne Young-Cooper said a review of delivering rail services would see Auckland One Rail not only run train services but also maintain the city's electric trains, maintain stations and look after safety and security. This was done with an eye on $7 billion of investment in the city's rail network, including the $4.4b City Rail Link that is due to open in 2024, electrification of rail from Papakura to Pukekohe and the purchase of extra electric trains over the next few years, she said. Young-Cooper said the prime driver for moving to the new model is to simplify the running of the rail network and improve customer and safety outcomes. "While cost savings were not the primary outcome sought, the pricing received through this very competitive procurement process has resulted in savings over current costs," she said. Auckland's rail network is owned and maintained by KiwiRail, while Auckland Transport owns the trains and train stations and is responsible for providing public transport services. There are 42 stations across the southern, eastern, western and Onehunga lines, and almost 4000 train services a week.
