Asian stocks plummet as oil drops below $28 a barrel January 19, 2016: 11:41 PM Asian stocks fell sharply Wednesday as oil sank below $28 a barrel to its lowest level in more than 12 years. The Hang Seng in Hong Kong plunged 3.8%, while Japan' s Nikkei lost 3%. The crash in crude oil prices keeps getting worse, heightening concerns about the health of the world economy. Oil in the US fell below $28 a barrel for the first time since September 2003, hitting a low of $27.56. Investors remain jittery over the flood of supply Iran is preparing to unleash on the saturated market in the coming months. Energy stocks were among the biggest losers in Hong Kong. Shares in the Chinese oil giants Sinopec, PetroChina and CNOOC all fell more than 5%. CNOOC announced Tuesday that it was cutting production this year amid falling oil prices. Stocks listed in Hong Kong are also coming under pressure from a steep decline in the Chinese territory' s currency, the Hong Kong dollar. The drop in oil prices is creating a widespread headache for financial markets. It' s causing energy companies' profits to plunge, raising worries about the prospect of bankruptcies in the oil sector and spooking investors about global growth. Iran' s return to the oil market is deepening an already huge supply glut in the oil industry. The International Energy Agency warned this week that the world is " drowning" in oil, especially in light of lackluster demand around the world. China, the world' s second-biggest economy and a key consumer of commodities, posted its slowest annual growth in 25 years on Tuesday.   |

haha yea, that kind of means that consumers do not benefit that much from low oil price.. the argument that low oil price benefits the economy as a whole as consumers can save on energy expenses is a facade.. the big winners are those few individuals as usual..

China Stocks Stabilize as Regulators Speak More Clearly 20 January 2016 10:42 China stocks edge up early Wednesday as authorities moved to set clearer expectations, say analysts. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index gains 0.2% to 3012.30, despite opening 0.5% lower. Stocks in aviation, airport and shipping transportation gain the most, as the US crude futures dropped by more than 3% Tuesday. China' s stock regulator said last Tuesday that seven new initial public offerings will be launched by lunar year under its revised regime, which scraps pre-payment requirements to reduce liquidity pressure on the equity market. Analysts say the CSRC made it clear that it will control the pace of IPOs. It has also specified that it will inject 600 billion yuan into the financial system ahead of the lunar new year. The messages were specific and well timed, and analysts think regulators We are doing a better job of communicating. " The regulators have learned from the consequences of poor communication, which amplified panic mood during first two weeks of trading," says Tang Yonggang, an analyst at Shenwan Hongyuan Securities, who expects the Shanghai market to enter range-bound trading in the short- term. The Shenzhen Composite Index trades up 0.4% at 1902.49 and the ChiNext board edges down 0.1% at 2239.76.   |

Asian Shares Slip in Early Trading 20 January 2016 8:35 Shares in Asia slipped early Wednesday, amid worries about further declines in oil and hesitation by investors that the market had yet to bottom. Japan' s Nikkei Stock Average was down 0.1%, Australia' s S & P / ASX 200 slipped 0.3% and South Korea' s Kospi fell 0.5%. The Hong Kong dollar reached another four-year low at HK $ 7.8223 against the US dollar. Losses were emerging in the region again after a brief reprieve the previous day, as investors fretted about oil and a slowdown in China. On Tuesday, the world' s second-largest economy posted the weakest annual pace of growth in a quarter century, with a 6.9 % expansion last year. The International Monetary Fund downgraded its forecast for global growth this year by a 0.2 percentage point to 3.4%, a meager improvement from last year' s 3.1% growth rate. It warned that economic turmoil in turmoil in China and financial contagion throughout emerging markets threaten to curb global growth. " The mood seems to be watch and see if there will be more stimulus ahead," said Andrew Sullivan, managing director at Haitong International, wrote in a morning note. " Volumes [across the region] remain light as investors rely on the ' National Buy Team ' to be the market backstop, " he added, referring to Chinese state-owned funds first tasked last summer with supporting shares. China shares rallied Tuesday amid expectations the government will ramp up stimulus following weak economic data, pushing the Shanghai Composite Index up 3.2%. The benchmark is down 15% for the year. Overnight, U. S. stocks eked out modest gains. But US oil futures fell 3.3% at $ 28.46 a barrel, the lowest level since September 2003, in the first trading session since sanctions were lifted against Iran, raising worries that the country would increase its supply amid a flooded market. Oil prices recovered a bit early Asia time, but energy shares were still under pressure with the sector in Australia slipping 0.7%. Woodside Petroleum Ltd. was down 0.7%, but Oil Search Ltd. gained 0.5%. The Japanese yen was up 0.1% at Yen117.47 to one US dollar, pressuring the Nikkei. A stronger Japanese yen makes Japanese exporters less competitive. Brent crude oil was up 1.9% at $ 29.30 a barrel. Gold prices fell 0.1% at $ 1087.80 a troy ounce.   |
