It' s a good company that still made some profits during the last (& very long) down cycle, while many shipping companies went bankrupt. Made losses only in 1 or 2 years. And it always gives dividends to its shareholders so long as it made profits. But the profits were very low during the down cycle. Dividends were like 0.7c per year. Slightly better years, they gave 0.9c dividends.

Looking at their announcements, my guess that 1 year contract with main liners probably was renewed in late 2q or early 3q. With main liners contributing bulk of the biz, my guess is we should see a big drop in earnings in 3q. Continuing to see profit drops into 2q next year before contracts are renewed.
Next year we have to see how shipping perform for they might have to renew their new contracts at a even lower price. Anyway, my guess is it is hard for Samudera's share price to perform if the company is going to report much lower profits for the next few quarters ( till 2q2024) due to lower contract value |

most of the sg stocks cannot keep long one.. after hitting high will slowly come down and back to sq one.. i can only name one or two that rises from ash one.. AEM, GEAR.. the rest all hit high and slow go down one..not like USA stocks like those big names can make a few hundred times and still going up until last year.. |

Samudera Shipping issues profit guidance for Q3, warns of fall in earnings
 
SAMUDERA Shipping : S56 -2.96% on Monday (Oct 30) issued a profit guidance for the third quarter ended Sep 30, 2023, saying that revenue and earnings &ldquo recorded a contraction&rdquo , compared to the year-ago period.
 
&ldquo This was primarily due to a decline in the general market demand, which resulted in lower container volume handled and freight rates year on year,&rdquo said the mainboard-listed company in a bourse filing. 
 
The carrier, whose parent is Jakarta-listed Samudera Indonesia, added that the freight rate is likely to continue at its current level for the rest of the fiscal year. 
 
For the second half-year ended Dec 31, 2022 &ndash which included its third-quarter results for FY2022 &ndash Samudera posted a 61.8 per cent increase in revenue to US$514.4 million, and a 63.6 per cent rise in profit to US$150.3 million. 
 
Specific figures for the third quarter since FY2020 are not available, following the scrapping of compulsory quarterly reporting on the local bourse in 2020.

Yeah. Samudera Shipping is a good company but now is not the time to enter or add this counter. Shipping cycle is just past its peak. The sheer volume of container goods and the sky-high freight rates that made its earnings pop will not return in a hurry.  As its earnings normalises downwards, I suspect the share price will continue to fall to 50c or less within a year, then likely drift to 30c levels in the next few years. Think it should not reach the 10c levels unless there is prolonged severe depression. Time to buy is when shipping cycle is at its trough, share price stabilised at 30c or below, and when everyone is very sian & shun this counter. 😂

Basically the world of shipping works like this, namely, china-transpacific and vice versa as well as china to europe and vice vera. Huge volumes of cargoes will be feedered down to the feeders like sam, pil, rcl and others. Thus, the feeders will not escape unscathed when oil prices surge as the wars escalate and usa-china relationship remains tense among other headwinds. But what if there is a pause in the wars, or at least 1 war suddenly? What if china-usa hold hands again lol ? May be USA may cut rate in 2024 to avert recession? It is anybody' s guess. My humble view.

Agree.Thanks for your view. Mkt indeed is feeling negative. Just hope price will recover at least higher than now especially for those vested. Samudera' s business is mainly in  Asia where there is no war so far. Oil and goods need tankers and cargo ships to transport to customers. The demand is always there. Time will tell.

For me, it is neither a gem nor a value trap.  The 2 wars are growing side by side among other headwinds  like fed hike and weakening chinese economy. The transport sector is vulnerable to high oil prices hitting the bottomline. The falling/weak freight rates are not a good omen. Its noteworthy that 2021, 2022 were the heydays of shipping, thanks to covid. So the p/e, p/b etc are not a good reflection. Chart-wise, it tells the same story. Above my humble view.
