Bro, the Government wants to eliminate cash. A great example is China. Each time when I am there for work, I carry only few hundred RMB in my wallet for emergency use. For a good 3 weeks, I did not take my cash out from my wallet from the minute land at the airport till i reach back home. Not once I use cash to pay.  Everything is QR code. Even when I buy sweets worth RMB$2-3, I can scan and pay.  Nowadays, I pay everything using either QR code, PayWave, Grab Pay, PayLar or PayNow. I rarely have cash on me. When I go out with friends for dinner, it' s way easier to split our bills. We just transfer to one person who pays first.  Most hawker stalls i visit have QR code already. Although they don' t like it but i told them it save time as they don' t need to think how much change they have to give me back especially when they are super busy. So those stalls that I frequent with them. they recognize me and they said they have change their payment method digitally. They actually thanked me as they were able to work more efficiently during peak hours. Plus their accounting was much easier as they don' t have to keep counting cash each day......... It' s a matter of time we will be a cashless society.

No. Shortists will adjust and will still try to keep Singtel price Low. They will be here to stay. But let Singtel take advantage of this licence to transform our society into one that relies less on cash. The store of value will lesser and lesser be in physical items like notes, gold and jewellery -   costly to produce anyway, will degrade and may be stolen, and need replacement and polishing. A brave new world worth investing in!

This is fantastic transformational news for SingTel - it is not only Singapore, but the experience from this, will allow them to replicate Digibanks with high margins in many many other markets in developing markets.

Give all investors time to think this through.  But to be fair, this is not going to solve all Singtel' s problems.  It just might lead them to develop the technologies for 6G telecommunications for banking. Buying and selling may be accomplished wirelessly and without the need for intermediaries. A wireless chip embedded in our bodies, that could be used for transactions, perhaps?

BANKSMAS awards digital bank licenses to two consortiums, two entitiesJeffrey Tan  Published on Fri, Dec 04, 2020 / 7:19 PM GMT+8 / Updated 32 minutes ago
Four licences to operate digital banks in Singapore have been awarded by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) today. A consortium comprising Grab Holdings and Singapore Telecommunications (Singtel) has clinched a digital full bank licence. An entity wholly-owned by Sea has also secured a digital full bank licence.
Meanwhile, a consortium comprising Greenland Financial Holdings Group, Linklogis Hong Kong and Beijing Co-operative Equity Investment Fund Management has clinched a digital wholesale bank licence. And an entity wholly-owned by Ant Group has also secured a digital wholesale bank licence. According to MAS, a full digital bank can take deposits from retail customers.  However, a wholesale digital bank is catered towards non-retail customers, such as small and medium enterprises. The central bank says that the successful applicants must meet all relevant prudential requirements and licensing preconditions before it grants them their respective banking licences. MAS expects the new digital banks to commence operations from early 2022. In June, MAS shortlisted 14 digital bank applicants out of 21. Forrest Li, chairman and group CEO of Sea, says the company&rsquo s mission is to better the lives of consumers and small businesses through technology.  &ldquo As a proudly homegrown company, we look forward to further contributing to the long-term development of our nation&rsquo s digital economy, creating more employment opportunities in Singapore, and empowering our whole community to thrive in the digital era,&rdquo he adds. Sea says that via its three platforms &ndash Shopee, Garena, and SeaMoney &ndash is already deeply integrated into Singapore&rsquo s digital economy with young consumers and SMEs. Its digital bank will draw on insights about the needs of these users introduce products, and services that will improve the lives of the targeted customer group and also help drive Singapore' s digital economy. Anthony Tan, group CEO and co-founder of Grab, believes that with Singtel&rsquo s combined experience in meeting the everyday needs of Singaporeans, as well as Grab&rsquo s deep tech expertise and data-driven insights, the digital bank will further the joint venture&rsquo s goal to empower more people to gain better control of their money and achieve better economic outcomes for themselves, their businesses and families. Yuen Kuan Moon, Singtel' s group CEO-designate,  says that the joint venture has the combined digital expertise and deep customer knowledge, the assets and the synergies to make banking more accessible and intuitive, to deliver much-needed product simplicity, speed and affordability to consumers and enterprises.  &ldquo As a homegrown company, we look forward to contributing to this exciting digital era of finance for Singapore that will drive greater value creation, build new careers and develop a strong Singaporean core of fintech talent for the industry,&rdquo he says.   |

Yes. I rarely handled cash more than five years ago while living in NZ. This is the way to go and the banks have been transforming.

I think it' s the way to go nowadays. I hate to go bank to queue up and wait. Time is money.  I rarely go to the bank unless i really have to.  Although conventional banking will still exist to serve customers but pretty sure the big 3 will need to level up. Digital Banking is one way to kill money laundering as all transactions are track and recorded. Hawker stalls sales will be track as well as normally they won' t declare the exact amount.  The cashless society which the Government was targeting is finally coming true.

No, pies are getting bigger. As a whole, the banking industry will benefit. Economic rebound and increasing affluence. New sources of capital. More movement points for money to flow and more transactions to be made. Money pushing business. When consumers benefit, they prosper in business, more money made, flows into the banking system and is recycled into more lending and more businesses benefitting. Good on the whole for the Singapore' s economy, esp. the banking sector.
