SINGAPORE (Apr 27): Hutchison Port Holdings Trust or HPH Trust saw 1Q earnings fall 48.9% to HK$285.8 million ($49 million) from HK$558.9 million a year ago. Correspondingly, earnings per unit fell to 3.38 HK cents (0.58 cents) from 6.42 HK cents. Revenue for the three months ended March 2015 stayed flat at HK$2.9 billion. The container throughput of Hongkong International Terminals or HIT was about the same as last year and the container throughput of Yantai International Terminals or YICT increased by 10% as compared to the same quarter in 2014, primarily due to the growth in US, transshipment and empty cargoes. The revenue and other income of Asia Containter Terminals or ACT were not consolidated under the quarters topline after ACT became a joint venture with 40% effective interest held by HPH Trust. During the quarter, the average revenue per TEU for Hong Kong was higher than last year due to tariff increment but was partially offset by adverse throughput mix from liners. For China, the average revenue per TEU was lower than last year, mainly due to a higher empty/laden container ratio. Cost of services rendered was HK$1.16 billion or 3.6% above last year due to higher container throughput, increase in external contractors costs and inflationary pressure, although these were partially offset by lower fuel prices. Staff costs rose 6.6% to HK$80.4 million though. Other operating income came 96.4% lower at HK$8.9 million due to the net gain of HK$243.8 million arising from the disposal of 60% effective interest in ACT in 2014, but this was partially offset by YICTs net exchange gain deriving from its RMB-denominated monetary liabilities in 2015. In its review, the trustee-manager of HPH Trust said outbound cargoes to the US continue to display an upward trend, while the outbound cargoes to the EU remain weak. However, cargo volume for transshipment and the niche trade routes of Far East, Africa, Central and South America and Oceania is projected to increase moderately. And despite the interest rate cuts by the Chinese government since November 2014 to boost the economy, the growth momentum for Chinas economy remains weak. Still, the trustee-manager is confident that HPH Trust will respond promptly and effectively to any challenges, given its strong fundamentals. As leading liners continue to build up their mega-vessel fleet, form carrier alliances and expand the coverage of vessel-sharing schemes in order to promote economies of scale, HPH Trust reinforces its position as the terminal-of-choice for mega-vessels calling at the Pearl River Delta, it added. HPH Trust closed flat at 0.69 US cent on 12.2 million units traded. |
