LOWER contribution from rig building and offshore platform projects took a toll on results for Sembcorp Marine in its second quarter. Net profit plunged 51.2 per cent to S$5.6 million from the year-ago period, the group said in a Singapore Exchange filing on Thursday evening. The fall in profit was mainly due to lower contribution from rig building and offshore platform projects, and foreign exchange translation loss on the US dollar borrowings for the Brazil yard, it said. |

The prolonged low oil price has impacted the major global oil producers to cut down capex expenditures, particularly offshore and marine industries in very challenging circumstances. We have seen some casualties like Ezra and Swiber. Many clients were facing financial problems and delays to their projects. Keppel Offshore & Marine and Sembcorp Marine are not spared from this prolonged downturn. KOM reported 1H 2017 with approximately 10 million in the red. This was partly due to the high interest expenses for the period 1H 2007 which recorded approximately 77million compared to 59million for the similar period of last year. This means the borrow costs has gone up by almost 30% higher. Sembcorp Marine will report the result on 27 July 2017. The finance costs reported for the 1H 2016 recorded approximately 40milion. Suppose the finance costs go up in tandem with KOM 30%, it will cost approximately 52million which is hard to make any profits in that margin. This is provided the speculation about a possible merger with rival KOM is endorsed by both the groups. Otherwise the recent share price ran up will be unsustainable.
