S & P 500 turns positive for 2016 as recession fears fade

The S & P 500 closed positive for the year on Friday for the first time in 2016 as the U.S. Federal Reserve' s dovish tone and a strengthening economic outlook compelled investors to take on more risk.

In part, the rally was a continued reaction to the Fed' s move on Wednesday, in which it scaled back expectations for the number of rate hikes in the coming months. Major indexes gained for five weeks in a row and the Dow closed higher every day this week.

" It was a huge gift to the market," said Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott in Philadelphia. " I think the market was bracing for a more hawkish view."

The Dow Jones industrial average closed positive for the year for the first time in 2016 on Thursday.

Following the Fed move, the dollar weakened and drove up commodity prices. Oil rose above $ 42 a barrel.

" People are realizing that this means a weaker dollar and that should benefit a lot of the stocks in the S & P and Dow, stocks with lots of exposure overseas," said Kim Forrest, research analyst at Fort Pitt Capital Group in Pittsburgh.

Crude oil dipped on Friday as traders booked profits after strong seasonal demand and the U.S oil rig count rose for the first time since December.

Stronger-than-expected economic data, such as recent jobs and wages reports, and improved expectations for corporate earnings, have also eased recession fears and emboldened investors, Forrest said.

U only can try long or super ling usd when it is below 1.30 to sgd. The usd is going down further...my guess nxt yr this time at least lower than 1.30sgd

And depends how they play this out,it can go to below 1.20sgd

Singapore shares close higher STI in the black for the year

THE Straits Times Index on Friday moved into positive territory for 2016 when it jumped 26.63 points or 0.9 per cent to end at 2,906.8.

. It was the first time the index closed in the black since it ended 2015 at 2,882.73 The push was led by the three banks and Singtel - turnover in the 30 STI stocks amounted to S $ 1.2 billion, about 71 per cent of the total dollar volume of S $ 1.7 billion that was done by the whole market. Most of the index' s gain came in the final seconds of trading and was probably in anticipation of a Wall Street rally on Friday.

For the week, the STI gained 78 points or 2.8 per cent for the year to date, it is now up 24 points or 0.8 per cent.

The main focus this week was the US Federal Reserve' s Federal Open Markets Committee (FOMC) meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday, which although lived up to expectations by leaving interest rates unchanged, surprised markets by its dovish stance that there may be only two rate hikes this year instead of the previous plan for four.

Our STI has come back a long way within a short week or so .......much as we can expect....it can not rise in a straight line.. It is more healthy to have soe profit taking along the way.....anyway, the 3000 level should not be too tough this mth...:))

Asia: Stocks outside Japan buoyed by US $ 40 oil, STI up 0.4%

Asian stocks outside Japan rose to their highest level this year on Friday (March 18) as crude oil solidified gains above US $ 40 a barrel and the US dollar held declines incurred after the Federal Reserve tempered its interest-rate outlook. A resurgent yen sent Japanese shares lower.

US crude held above US $ 40 a barrel, close to its highest point of the year, and copper futures were steady following a 2.6 per cent surge.

Oil' s more than 50 per cent recovery from an almost 13-year low reached just five weeks ago has underpinned a revival in risk assets, burnishing sentiment among traders bruised from the volatile start to the year.

West Texas Intermediate oil rose 0.2 per cent to US $ 40.33 a barrel, on track for a weekly climb of 4.8 per cent following Thursday' s 4.5 per cent surge.

The revival in equities moved on to a more solid footing this week as the Fed reduced the number of interest-rate hikes it expects to enact in 2016.

Most Asian Shares Rise as Currencies Gain
Japan' s stocks not helped by U.S. dollar' s weakness, which pushed up yen

Most Asian shares rose Friday amid gains in oil prices and a surge in major currencies across the region.

Australia' s S & P / ASX 200 gained 0.3% and Korea' s Kospi rose 0.1%, but Japan' s Nikkei Stock Average ended 1.3% lower.

In China, the Shanghai Composite Index rose 1.8%, and Hong Kong' s Hang Seng Index was up 0.6%.

The weaker U.S. dollar helped send oil prices higher overnight, and those gains were lifting shares of materials and energy shares across Asia Friday. Oil prices are also rising after OPEC officials suggested they could limit output even if Iran does not cooperate.

Meanwhile, China' s Nasdaq-style board led gains in mainland China' s stock markets Friday. The ChiNext, a startup board in Shenzhen, surged 4.6%.

Chinese investors were betting on tech stocks poised to benefit from Beijing' s support for the " Internet economy." Analysts also attributed the gains to market speculation that some banks and brokers were relaxing rules on margin financing, which had fueled the Chinese stock market rally last year .

Asia stocks turn positive for year, dollar sags after Fed

Asian shares edged higher on Friday, turning positive for the year, while the U.S. dollar weakened broadly after the Federal Reserve' s cautious stance on further rate increases prompted investors to rebuild their bets on riskier assets.

Oil prices soared, with U.S. crude surging 5 percent on Thursday to pierce the $ 40 barrier, as the market was propped up by optimism that major producers may strike an output freeze deal next month.

OPEC kingpin Saudi Arabia and non-OPEC producers led by Russia will meet on April 17 in the Qatar capital Doha, aiming for the first global supply deal in 15 years.

The front-month in U.S. crude West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures CLc1 extended gains on Friday to as high as $ 40.55 a barrel, its highest in more than three months, and last stood at $ 40.35, up 0.4 percent.

Brent crude front-month LCOc1 reached the year' s peak of $ 41.60 and was last at $ 41.48.

Dow closes positive for year as commodities rally, dollar dives

Wall St moved higher on Thursday, pushing the Dow Jones industrial average into positive territory for the year, as commodity prices rose on the back of a weaker U.S. dollar to boost shares in the energy and materials sectors.

The Dow' s move into positive territory came a day after the U.S. Federal Reserve took a dovish stance that weighed on the dollar.

" It was a weak dollar rally," said John Augustine, chief investment officer at Huntington National Bank. " It took up groups associated with a weaker dollar."

The top performing sectors in the S & P 500 were materials, industrials and energy.

The rally was a " continued reaction from the Fed' s move," said David Lefkowitz, senior equities analyst at UBS Americas Wealth Management in New York.

The Fed on Wednesday pointed to moderate U.S. economic growth and strong job gains but cautioned about risks from an uncertain global economy.

The central bank pointed to the possibility of two more rate hikes before the end of the year, having laid out four hikes in 2016 when it raised rates in December.

U.S. crude CLc1 settled up 4.5 percent at $ 40.20 a barrel on optimism that major producers will strike an output freeze deal next month amid rising crude exports and gasoline demand in the United States ..

Singapore shares close higher after Fed' s dovish hints

THE " bad news is good for stocks" mode of investing made its unsurprising return on Thursday as the Straits Times Index (STI) rose 35.96 points to 2,880.17 in response to the US Federal Reserve' s Wednesday decision to keep interest rates unchanged and the likelihood that it will only raise rates twice this year instead of four times because of the weakening economic outlook.

Turnover, which on Wednesday sank to its lowest this year, improved to 1.6 billion units worth S $ 1.2 billion. Excluding warrants, there were 277 rises versus 130 falls.

" The index plunged in January and February because of China and oil worries, and recovered in March because oil bounced and China cut interest rates," remarked an observer " We' re back to where we were before all that drama -. Which is looking at weakening growth and earnings. "

Markets also appear to be happier now with a weak outlook since this means more stimulus from central banks in the form of delayed rate hikes and increased quantitative easing via bond purchases.
