Of course there are some instances where being heavily long cash is a very good thing. Perhaps now is one of those times, when real interest rates are high (at least for US$, although that may not be the case for much longer). Or if you can accurately imminently call market crashes. But for most investors time in the market is better than timing the market. With DBS I think that certainly applies. I am happy to hold it for the long term as I think over the long term it will appreciate significantly. If it jumps up a bit in the short term I am not going to sell in the hope to buy it cheaper because I fear the risk that it continues to go ever higher more than I fear the risk that it will drop. To be clear I am not saying one should not hold some cash for a rainy day. What I am saying is that holding a lot more in order to try to time the market is rarely a winning strategy for most people unless you are an incredibly good judge on relatively short term market movements. China' s reserves in gold as portion of their total reserves is still pretty tiny.  Yes, it pretty strange that gold has moved up in the face of strong dollar. It is normally inverse of each other. But the buying by BRICS explains the rise.  But i believe once the Feds starts to ease, that is when gold will move up further. Prophetjul, Thanx for your conversion. In 22 years, DBS has depreciated in gold! Except, of course, when one adds the dividend payouts, I expect it will even out. So gold is truly a standard of value. Trade with mind-set and valuation shift
