WEALTH management platform iFast Corporation expects to " substantially accelerate the growth" of its overall Hong Kong business over the medium term, said chief executive Lim Chung Chun on Monday (Oct 25) as he provided details of the group' s strategy under its 5-year plan.
During the earnings call for iFast' s third-quarter results, Lim added that the company also wants to pursue more financial licences and increase the scale and quality of the existing business as it seeks to build a " truly global business model" .
iFast sees strong growth coming from its overall Hong Kong business, especially in 2024 and 2025, boosted by its new ePension division, which will start making contributions from around 2023. The group provided guidance for the Hong Kong business over the weekend when announcing its quarterly results.
 
Currently, iFast has an existing wealth management platform in Hong Kong, and net revenue - revenue after deducting commissions and fees for financial advisers and securities brokerage expenses - for FY2020 was HK$106.5 million (S$18.4 million), with profit before tax (PBT) margin at 30 per cent on net revenue.
iFast expects net revenue to exceed HK$800 million in 2024 and HK$1.2 billion in 2025. PBT margins are expected to be above 15 per cent in 2024 and more than 33 per cent in 2025.
The company did not provide the mix between wealth management and ePensions in its guidance, but Lim said the group assumed " modest growth" for its existing wealth management platform.

Lim noted that the better margins projected in 2025 would be due to margins becoming more optimum, following the early stages of operation of the ePension division in 2023-2024.
" We hope that in subsequent years, the margins will continue to be at least as high or better," he said, adding that the Hong Kong business should also be growing beyond 2025.
It was announced in January that PCCW Solutions won the tender for Hong Kong' s eMPF platform. iFast is PCCW Solutions' prime subcontractor for a category that includes Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) scheme operation services, transformation services and user delivery services. The contract has a term of 7 years, with option for extension of 3 years.
In response to analyst queries on whether the income stream could continue in future, Lim said: " The possibility of that continuing is more than a possibility, we certainly hope that we can turn that into a probability as we move on."
He noted that the service iFast provides is something which would still be required even after the contract ends, and somebody would still need to do the work on a perpetual basis.
Beyond Hong Kong, iFast is also targeting opportunities in other countries.
Lim said the group would be pursuing more financial licences in different jurisdictions as part of its 5-year plan, as iFast looks to build on capabilities in fintech and other services that are adjacent to wealth management.
This would not be limited to the 5 markets that iFast currently operates in, he said. However, he did not provide details on specific countries it would target.
" We would like to have digital banking capabilities in one or more jurisdictions, and we' ll continue to pursue digital banking licences," Lim said. The company had been unsuccessful in its application for a digital banking licence in Singapore last year. Earlier this year, it submitted a digital banking licence application in Malaysia.
Lim said the company is keen for such a licence as distributors of wealth management products in most countries are banks. " The cash sits with the bank," he said, adding that this has given banks an advantage in this space.
" We would like to have some of that traditional advantage that the banks have for ourselves in order for us to grow our wealth management business or even to accelerate growth of our wealth management."
Another area which iFast sees as adjacent to wealth management is having a marketplace for bonds, as Lim observed that there is a gap in the market for such a service targeted at individual investors.
Existing platforms are aimed at institutions, Lim noted, and iFast has been working on having a marketplace for bonds, and it is in the midst of applying for a recognised market operator licence.
Lim said the group remains committed to achieving its assets under administration (AUA) target of S$100 billion by 2028. This would represent a compound annual growth rate of 27 per cent from its AUA of S$18.4 billion as at end-Sept.
" Last two years, we have been achieving more than that. So we have to build in some assumptions that certain years there' ll be slower growth rate and so on. But overall, we believe that 27 per cent is a number that is achievable with good execution," he said.
The other part of the business plan is for the company to operate " a truly global business model" , which can operate in just a few countries but serve customers around the world.
Lim noted that such business models have emerged for many industries, such as e-commerce and music, but there has not been such businesses emerging in a big way in the fintech wealth management space.
He added that this is a long-term trend, which the company expects to happen, but it would take many years of careful planning and execution for iFast to achieve its vision of having a truly global business model.
" As far as iFast is concerned, in the next five years, we would like to be able to make some tangible progress towards this vision," Lim said, adding that the company will focus on continually expanding its global fintech ecosystem and connectivity.
For the third quarter ended Sept 30, iFast recorded S$7.6 million in net profit, up 23.3 per cent year on year, on the back of higher revenue. Net revenue rose 32.6 per cent to S$30.3 million.

The Reit' s growth may not excite, but you' ll be wrong if you think that it cannot produce satisfying returns. The units I hold have increased by over 550 per cent over the past 13 year
