BANGKOK/YANGON ? Myanmar has been fighting a losing battle to stabilize its currency, despite employing a wide range of tools, and ordinary people are paying for it in the form of runaway inflation.
A 31-year-old hotel worker in the Southeast Asian nation?s economic capital of Yangon is nearing her breaking point in dealing with higher prices. ?We can?t keep going just by cutting expenses,? the woman said. She and her husband together make the rough equivalent of $600 a month. They have a 3-year-old child and live with the woman?s aging mother. ?I?ve sold handcrafts and borrowed money from friends,? the woman said. There is no sign that the rise in consumer prices will abate. In Yangon, gasoline has hit an all-time high of roughly 2,900 kyat per liter. Prices for rice, onions and garlic have jumped more than 50% over the past year. The World Bank estimated in December that Myanmar would log inflation of 20.1% for the year through March 2024, leading the region. Food and transportation prices continued to surge during April?s Thingyan new-year holiday, which includes a water-dousing festival. State media have reported on higher prices. But the numbers were based on wholesale prices, and consumers got hit harder. Fueling the inflation is the depreciation of the kyat. Its street value recently approached 4,000 kyat to the dollar ? nearly 70% softer than its level around the time of the military?s February 2021 takeover of government. The kyat has neared the record weakness it had logged in late August 2022. But this time, it has softened despite government efforts to calm the market, whether through easing controls or through selling foreign currency. The central bank has moved more than 20 times in 2024 to prop up the kyat. This series of interventions entailed selling foreign currency on the market or to traders. Most of the currency sales were of dollars, with the Thai baht and the Chinese yuan included. Previously, the central bank had leaned toward such hard-line tactics as forced currency exchanges and cracking down on money-changers. The bank had distanced itself from buying and selling currencies on the market. Many emerging-nation currencies have weakened against the dollar. But in Myanmar, factors linked to the civil war have accelerated the kyat?s depreciation. One factor is the military draft implemented on Feb. 10. Many young people have fled across the border to avoid conscription, and there has been an uptick in activity to acquire dollars and baht for the journey. The central bank interventions may have had an impact at first from the announcement effect, but this ?has faded due to the effect of the draft,? said a senior manager at an international banking group working in Yangon. Clashes between the military and ethnic armed organizations have escalated since October, and there is no sign of a letup. In response to the revolt, the military in December moved to stimulate the economy by easing measures that had mandated currency exchanges and had controlled exchange rates. But the unrelenting drop by the currency has raised costs for local businesses, which then pass along the higher costs. Gasoline is a prime example of the fallout. Operators passed along extra costs to the price, burdening consumers. Prices of medical products, which are mostly imported, have doubled to tripled in recent years. Medical supplies have been hit by shortages as well, impacting people?s health. ?I?ve turned down invitations to eat out, and I?ve sold gold and jewels that I had in the house to pay for medicine,? a 29-year-old woman with arthritis said. |
