Some smart bros here are already sitting on a sizable profit. They bought into olam at $1.4+ when you were still criticising olam. Short squeeze is only a bonus to them now.
Please do not be silly like the german guy. |

Wonder you heard about one German Billionaire committed suicide by throwing himself against an on-coming train because he had lost a lot of money in 2009 about a wrong bet on VW during a short squeeze (I think it's more than money, that German Billionaire lost his pride) (read here http://gawker.com/5124449/ruined-after-betting-on-volkswagen-stock-german-billionaire-commits-suicide). Coming back to Olam,Muddy Waters has declared openly that it has shorted the shares of Olam. If there is nothing really wrong with Olam, Muddy Waters stands to lose big time, in particular, Carson Block would have lost his pants and more, if there is a short squeeze. So, why hasn't a short squeeze occurred, yet? You have to think deep to find the answer. Or, do you (have to)? |

Awesome  one... There are also a lot of people who shorted  the share and then wrote a lot of bad things and claimed the company  was fundamentally bad... The next day, they changed their position from short to long  and started writing good  things  about the company ... So that in the next year... they in and out the same stock for countless times... this is NOT those who believe the company is fundamentally flawed... The more important question is have one made a profit out of the MW/Olam saga.

Good point. I will put my money in the counter that I think will bring me more profit in the short term, if not in the long term. For the time being, I emphasise 'for the time being',  I find olam a better bet.

May be next year this time, I may have gone in and out of Olam another 5 times. May be next year this time, you and I may not longer be around. Although  I am not sure what will  happen next year this time, there is one thing that  I am very sure,  and that is  'words' alone in the equity market  will not take one  anywhere.

Wilmar just paid off about US$571 million of Bonds on 18 Dec 2012. One company just paid off its debt (that means it has money) while the other company, i.e., Olam, keeps asking for money or keeps borrowing money. On which company would you rather risk your money?   |

Since the collapse of Lehman Brothers in Sep 2008, I have been in and out of Olam no less than 15 times. As of today, my total profit on Olam, including the latest unrealised profit, is not much less than my current total shareholding of Olam. You may want to consider saying “Everyone else who got involved in this co lost money.” in future. Further, although I know of people who have lost money in this counter, I also know of people who have made profit in this counter. In my view, Olam is a good company with great prospects. I have done my research and I think that Olam has good fundamentals. However, like any other good companies, it is not without its shortcomings. In addition, it has its fair share of critics, some presenting a more balanced view, but some has never made a positive comment on it. Although Olam has good fundamentals, I am not really a staunch supporter of it. To me, Olam is simply one of the counters that I trade to make a profit. Fundamentals are an important factor to consider in the equity market. However, investment philosophy and investment strategy are no less important. Any shrewd investor should know that. Although Olam has good fundamentals, I would not have made the same amount of profit in the equity market if I had I traded simply on the basis of fundamentals. That being said, fundamentals are important, although they are subjective to some extent. As much as you salute me for entering into Olam, I salute you for spending time researching a company in which you don’t have a position.

Flat. I dont invest in equities, which requires  detailed research of individual cos. I only dabble  derivatives such as  futures. If you entered into the Olam trade just recently, I gotta salute you. Everyone else who got involved in this co lost money. |

Dear Obfuscate, I am impressed by your knowledge of Olam and I believe many people here do as well. However, I seriously believe that we should spare the people here this ordeal. I tried to end the discussion with you on Monday by saying that I totally agree with you that if share price was pushed below the equity rights issue it means the issue is not priced correctly, although I had a different view. It was done to appease you to end the discussion because I do not see  the importance of this topic to many of the people here. Apparently, it was without success as  you are rather insistent on continuing with this topic. However, even with greater knowledge of Olam, you will not make a profit without taking a position. I have a long position of 600 lots at an average cost of about 1.45 (including commission). What is your position?

Are you aware that from  early Oct  2008 to 21 Dec 2012, Olam returned 7%, all of it from dividend payment? For comparison STI returned 59% and Noble Group  returned 67%. (All three of these hit a bottom in  mid Oct 08.) Olam's underperformance is  primarily due to its debt financing IMHO. In Jun 09 (financial year end) Olam had total debt of $3.2b and market cap was $4.2b. Fast forward to Jun 12, total debt  had grown 2.3x since 08 to  $7.5b and market cap was almost unchanged at $4.3b. As of Sep 2012, total debt was $8.4b and market cap today is $3.7b.
