Last long term  shipping  boom from 2005 to 2008 or 2009 is due to the China boom and become the world factory, raw material and  energy  flow from world to china by using container vessels and bulk carriers. Manufactured product from China to the world which create never ever and unexpected  rapid boom in shipping history. All the gaps of rapid boom are filled and even over estimated the boom which create over capacity now. The world economic come into peace and may last for quite a long time. US and europe economy is recovering but the new vessels will continually be ordered and filled the gap. High debt and low competitive company like NOL will never have chance to recover. |

It is a cyclindal stuff but this time it just take almost double the time for the world economy to recover, sit out this downturn and we be ok. Just take care don rush into dividend stock / REIT / property counter as it is peaked and now going downhill due to big boy pulling out their money as the world economy economy showing sign of growth. Money rotating in and out of stock market/bond, just need to guess this time round where is the money going into then u make money. Fxxk singtel $100+ for world cup subscription lol this is crazy. |

CMA CGM reports marginal increase in Q1 profits By Marcus Hand from Singapore The world?s third largest container line CMA CGM remained the black in the first quarter with a marginal increase in profit to $97m. The French line reported a 1.2% increase in first quarter net profit to $97m compared to $96m in the same period a year earlier. Revenues for the first quarter grew 2.7% to $3.94bn. CMA CGM said it had succeeded in limiting the fall in average freight rates to 2.9% compared the first quarter of 2013, compared to average drop on the Shanghai Containerised Freight Index (SCFI) of 8.6%. Volumes of the line grew 5.8% in the first quarter to 2.8m teu. Looking ahead CMA CGM said: "Thanks to the efficiency of its agency network and the quality of its service, CMA CGM continues to record a sustained increase of its volume.? In terms of freight rates the company said: ?After a dip at the beginning of the second quarter 2014, freight rates are now back at supportive levels but should nevertheless remain volatile.? Meanwhile Rodolphe Saadé was named as the successor to chairman Jacques R. Saadé when the time comes, and has been appointed to the second top position in the company as vice-chairman executive officer. |

Lot of guys here negative about ship cos it is so long and ship share price did not take off. But one thing all need to take note, we are currently still in a deep recession minus the big drop in stock market and property. THe pain from the recession is not felt so acute like in 1997 and 2000 cos US fed Reserve 3 years of printing money to force the rich people to flee bond and buy up yield stocks and property. So in a recession what kind of price do u think ship is in, it is always the sub $1 range as proven in the past recession. Do not get fooled by the skyhigh stock market value and think we are out of the recession, we still stuck in the mud currently was able to pull out of it bit by bit. Overcapacity in container is an example of shipowners getting fooled by the quick bounce of economy in 2010 then followed by a deep recession casued by euro crisis, when global economy did improve and import demand pick up then the overcapacity issues would be eased and freight rate stabilised. For now is sit tight and enjoy world cup in the next 2 weeks till mid july. Ship privatisation might or might not take place depend on global economy growth. IF global demand pick up very fast in 2H14 then high chance cos temasek like to take advantage as they did in 2004 else it is slow plough. |

I like your analysis. Also, I think NOL is of national strategic interest. Perhaps there are some unprofitable routes that Singapore government want NOL to plough, but they  may not be very profitable. So if Temasek takes NOL private, more can be  done from government' s standpoint.

Container volume is increasing yearly. New delivery container vessel over filling the gap. If 2H14 economic booming( really??? China gov cooling the market, rumour of property bubble burst), it will only encourage top 3 retrofit their old vessels and fill the gap and order more new vessels.
NOL is so hopeless. Debt plus debt plus debt plus interest.

Europe election over and no big shit coming out of it and european stock markets now all rallying 1-2%. Hope the good feeling spill over to ship tomorrow since ship share movement highly dictated by european fund managers. Was just wondering when temasek going to privatise SMRT, no point listing as the government going to own all bus/terminal asset and SMRT would just reduce to a pure operator status with heavy competition from overseas, might even lose it prized monopoly position in like 3 years time. When SMRT got eaten up by temasek then it time to speculate when it would be ship turn, and last SIA lol. Basically government had to take over the air/land/sea transportation system since no need for them to be listed to get fund, just ask Ho chin for it and they would get whatever money they need for expansion or renewal. SIngapore global city need to keep transportation system free from outsider influence so die die had to suport the bus/rail, container shipping and airport/airlines. Privatisation is very good move this year and next due to cheaper  valuation and recovering global economy. Always a good move to expand/privatise when time is ripe for a recovery, take advantage of cheap loan and business friendly policy to expand lol. ECB in june might come out with bond buying programme to prop up lending to small business, now they trying to create inflation lol should just follow japan lead last year and simply print more money to circulate it in the sysem. Money not enough no problem, just on the printing press and boom u got the money, problem is ur currency would drop in value and all the retirement fund would lose their high interest rate. Everyone in the world are trying hard to export their way out of the shit hole created 5 years ago but not working cos consumers money not enough so need to print money for them to spend. Also increase the bloody salary to kepp up with inflation, 10 years small increase not enough to keep up with rises in food/transport/housing. Singapore minimum wage if ever got it should be $2K since no subsidy for food/transport/education etc , price taker so salary should not be peg to developing countries where they got hell lot of subsidies on those items. Just take note there is a big stack of cash hoard by global companies these few years of QE, they only use part of it to repurchase share explain Dow jones and S& P now at record level, once they unleash the cash hoard to expand prepare for growth tsunamis. |

Be patient and u get ur investment reward, sell and u lose big it simple. Already mentioned lot of time in forum, NOL currently is for those deep pocket investors who can hold long time not for newbies to make quick buck. IF want to make fast money, can just trade on the top10 counters, more volume and easier to make money. But i guess after last year penny stock crisis, lot of retail investors got burnt badly and most likely stay out of stock market for good so explain why so little retail interest in STI, everyone is either hoarding cash or investing in the next hot property. Stock investing is dead in singapore only the government link fund and brokerage house still hanging around, so most likel stocks would remain stagnant till the big Ah moh money from europe came back. Don worry too much, NOL would still be around as it had been for the last 30 years. World economy rebounding in 2H14 and the improved demand would offset the overcapacity in shipping, just need lot of patient and holding power. IF cannot hold ship then pls stay out of it and save ueself heartache when u forced to cover ur margin account. SCFI showing  resilent although declining a bit but big GRI coming in June and if demand remain strong should be able to see return of peak season surcharge. In short don worry too much, go watch summer time movies and enjo urself, ship stagnant in this price range till  2Q14 when u should see improvement due to better slot cost saving from new ship deployment. |

Temasek holding also made mistake too and lose billion of dollars. If the business is within singapore, Temasek can influence government and set policy in favour for them in  operation, like Keppel corp and Sembcorp Marine to employ thousand & thousand cheap labours from India, rebate and etc. But the business like NOL and Ex-Chartered Semi Con, Stat ChipPac, the companies are competing with global market, there are not such advantages for them. Maersk Line and top 3 are there. Although APL is top 8 now, but 2 years later once those even giant container vessels are delivered, APL will drop out from the top 10. Their so called efficient 8000 to 10000 TEU will be come common or obsolete since the top 10 are going to compete the same market with 12,000 to 18,000 TEU container vessels which are underconstruction or delivered since 2010. I really can' t even think and see any solution for NOL to survive when Top 3 are making profit now and Top 4 to Top 10 receive their even bigger and efficient container vessels. Just last year, Maesrk Line is making close to 1 billion USD and the first quarter is 400million, Just for this profit, it is the cost of 8 to 9 new 18000+ TEU container vessels which imply Maersk Line can pay off what they have ordered and may ordered more later if the container volume is still expanding and operating with current low freight rate which NOL is making loss. No chance for NOL.

Bring me back memories...wondering why all these GLC like NOL, ex-Chartered Semi-Con, SMRT, Stat ChipPac run by Scholars and ex-SAF officers are all bleeding multi-millions or billions and still carry on and on like nothing is wrong. Actually, something is very wrong. Ask yourself why the Europe's Maersk Line able to run profitably while our NOL is bleeding like no tomorrow? | ||

More like short covering lol, since morning till now share range bound at 0.985 currently only like a few mice nibbling at 0.98. It so boring, shortist market currently, all big players on holidays mode. End of month approaching, more short covering expected. |
