Singapore shares close higher for fifth time in six days

THE Straits Times Index (STI) on Tuesday rose for the fifth time in six days, gaining 34.06 points to 2,951.81 in response to an overnight jump on Wall Street and a 40-point rise in the Dow futures.

The STI' s rise was driven largely by the banks, though Singtel was the largest single index mover, with its S $ 0.10 rise to S $ 3.96 on volume of 31 million adding 10 points to the index.

Although the US market' s Monday rise was not unexpected - the Dow futures on Monday had staged a large intraday upward reversal, indicating a firm Monday for the US - reasons why the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 18,000 for the first time this year were unclear.

One suggestion was that with China slowing and Europe stagnant, the US with its modestly growing economy was the only realistic choice as a sort of safe haven.

Most Asia markets advance Nikkei jumps 3.7% as yen weakens

Most Asian markets gained on Tuesday, led by a jump in Japan shares, as oil prices steadied after Monday' s initial drop on producers' failure to reach a production-freeze deal over the weekend.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 jumped 598.49 points, or 3.68 percent, to 16,874.44, retracing its 3.4 percent loss in the previous session. Japanese stocks were boosted by a relatively weaker yen against the dollar and as market players digested the extent of damage from last week' s earthquakes .

Oil advanced during Asian hours, after paring most of its losses overnight. Global benchmark Brent added 0.56 percent to $ 43.15 a barrel as of 2:42 pm HK / SIN time, after settling down 0.4 percent. US crude futures were up 0.78 percent at $ 40.09 a barrel, after finishing down 1.4 percent overnight.

Analysts said Kuwait' s reduction in output remains supportive for crude for the time being.
Energy stocks in the region mostly rebounded Tuesday, with shares of Santos closing up 5.15 percent, Oil Search advancing 4.98 percent and Woodside Petroleum up 4.03 percent. Japan' s Inpex advanced 2.66 percent, while Chinese mainland shares of Sinopec were up 1.37 percent.

Asia set to follow US stocks higher

Futures pointed to a higher open for Asian markets on Tuesday, after a reversal in oil prices overnight sent U.S. stocks up.

Australian SPI futures were up 1 percent at 5,182, compared to the ASX 200' s last close at 5,137.05.

Nikkei futures in Chicago were up 0.06 percent at 16,700, while Osaka futures added 2.14 percent at 16,670. The Japanese benchmark index closed at 16,275.95.

Oil pared back losses overnight, with global benchmark Brent settling down 0.4 percent at $ 42.91. U.S. crude futures finished lower by 1.4 percent to $ 39.78 a barrel.
On Sunday, the world' s largest oil exporting countries failed to reach an agreement in Doha, Qatar, to freeze output at January levels in order to tackle the global supply glut.

The failure to do a deal initially sent oil prices tumbling over 5 percent. The reversal came after reports that a workers' strike in Kuwait had hit the gulf country' s daily oil output. Reuters reported that the strike cut the OPEC producer' s crude output by more than 60 percent, from about 3 million barrels per day to about 1.1 million.

Dow reclaims 18,000 as quarterly scorecards start to flow

The Dow Jones industrial average climbed to a nine-month high on Monday, in a market buoyed by Hasbro and Disney, as investors braced for a flurry of quarterly earnings reports through the week.

Chevron added 1.51 percent as crude oil prices steadied from earlier losses caused by the collapse of talks among major producers to tackle a stubborn global surplus.

A recent rebound in oil and signs that the U.S. economy is slowly improving have helped stocks rally from a steep selloff earlier this year that had pushed the S & P 500 down as much as 10.5 percent.

Helped as well by a US Federal Reserve showing little eagerness to raise interest rates, the index is now up 2 percent in 2016 and only about 2 percent short of its all-time high. The Dow breached 18,000 Monday for the first time since July 21 .

" It' s an agreeable, tame Fed that' s not always whooping and hollering about the threat of higher interest rates," said Jake Dollarhide, chief executive officer of Longbow Asset Management in Tulsa. " The lack of an ever-present threat of higher interest rates has a lot of people feeling a lot better. "

Singapore shares close weaker but off their lows, thanks to Dow futures rebound

THE failure of talks over the weekend in Doha to limit the supply of oil brought the sellers out and gave traders an excuse to go short on Monday with the Straits Times Index (STI) dropping 6.19 points to 2,917.75. Turnover was a low 927 million units worth S $ 815 million and excluding warrants there were 169 rises versus 244 falls.

The Dow futures, in the meantime, dropped 100 points in the early afternoon, though it managed to regain about 60 by 5pm. As a result, the STI also climbed off its intraday floor of 2,892. Both rebounds suggested that Wall Street on Monday may not plunge as badly as initially feared.

Markets around the region mostly ended weaker when oil prices fell sharply after news that the weekend oil talks had ended with no agreement.

Reports said Saudi Arabia reiterated that the country would only be a party to any oil freeze if all major producers including Iran are in agreement, but Iran said it saw no reason to participate in the talks because it is committed to raise production to pre-sanction levels.

Kuwait oil strike to support Brent, Dubai, reduce fuel exports: analysts

[SINGAPORE] A workers' strike in Kuwait that has cut its crude output by more than 60 per cent could support oil price benchmarks Brent and Dubai, and tighten oil product supplies as the country scales back refinery runs and exports, analysts said on Monday.

Opec producer Kuwait said on Sunday it has cut crude output to 1.1 million barrels per day (bpd) from normal production of about 3 million bpd. Output at its state refiner had already fallen to 520,000 bpd from 930,000 bpd before the work stoppage started on Sunday .

The production cuts come as a counterpoint to a failure among producers to coordinate output at Sunday' s Doha talks. That inability to reach an agreement dragged global oil futures down by 5 per cent on Monday.

Although the Kuwaiti strike is likely to be short-lived, other Opec and non-Opec output disruptions or production declines such as in Nigeria, Venezuela and the United States, as well as refiner maintenance amid steady demand in the first quarter have pointed to improving oil fundamentals, Goldman Sachs analysts said in a note on Monday.

Kuwait' s crude output cut has also affected its refining output, which could lead to sharp drops in its fuel exports.

" The impact on middle distillates will be huge because they are a big exporter," Energy Aspects analyst Nevyn Nah said. " If the run cuts prolong, it may help balance the middle distillates market."

Kuwait' s kerosene and diesel exports could fall by 190,000 bpd, Nah said, adding that its naphtha exports could drop by 90,000 bpd. Kuwait may also find itself importing fuel oil instead of exporting, he said.
