Why should CDG ignore the reality of ride hailing growth and hide inside a declining taxi market? That would be incompetent management.
Whether or not CDG does ride hailing, taxi drivers face the competition of ride hailing from various platforms. CDG seeks to give its taxi driver the benefits of both ride and street hailing. Taxi drivers today receive many jobs from Zig and they can also pick up passengers from the street. Heard the ride hailing commission from Zig is 4% compared to 20% by Grab. Anyone can verify?

Guru, if this Zoom Bee is so greedy to want to play PHV rental market, it is going to kill its own taxi business.
Taxi drivers are self-employed and can jump ship anytime. Right now, PHV drivers earn more than taxi drives because they have many platform to play and have surge pricing and can use their own cars. Is there any reason why a driver wants to drive a taxi and not a PHV at the current situation?

We are now e periencing revenge-tourism due to the reopening. After a while even this will quiet down. Just look at our own Singapore -- Shopping mall and restaurants, no more crowd no more queues. East Coast Park is deserted.
WFH is real in almost all companies. It will become part of the system of each. This is going to affect many small businesses in the CBD as it get more entrenched. Just ask the taxi drrs how many trips they make to the CBD a day and you will get the pictire. The post- Covid normalcy is just starting to show its colour. Human as it is now already can be anywhere at any one time without leaving their home. Land travel will be deemed as infficiency and waste of time which is unacceptable in tofay's business world.

What I feel is this it's the strategy of CDG.
You see, CDG's main source of income is taxi rental, not commission from bookings. If it will to open to all PHVs, then the taxi drivers would likely to have not enough booking jobs. So it is really choosing one invoice sources from another.
Other ride-hailing companies' main income are from commission of booking, so the more drivers access to their apps, the higher their income.

It is Zig, not Zip.
,
Inside this apps, when you book a ride, you can choose "taxi only, fixed price" or "taxi or car (PHV), fixed price" or "taxi only, by meter".
The car are all those rented from CDG.
Zig is considered an taxi booking apps so it is outside the ride- hailing Apps regulation.
It is a loophole but nobody complains.

I didn't realise Zip was strictly for PHV drivers that rent from CDG. That would exclude PHV drivers who have their own cars as well as those who rent from other vendors.
On the one hand, it limits the growth of PHV driver pool for Zip which affects availability for riders (important consideration on choosing which platform to book). On the other hand, it may be a transition strategy to assure its taxi driver partners that Zip did not become a free-for-all platform. It also may be a selling point for PHV drivers to rent from CDG so that they have 1 additional platforms to choose jobs.

Just to clarify a common misunderstanding. Any driver, whether he owns his car, he rents from Grab, from CDG or from any Tom, Dick or Harry car rental companies, can use any ride-hailing Apps (Grab, Tata, Go-jek) in Singapore as long as he applies for it, registers for it and clears the background checks. Who guarantees that? Well,. It is LTA. It is guaranteed by the ride hailing Act über the P2P Framework, enacted a few years back, this is to help the PHV drivers, to secure their job sources.. Company can't exclude drivers not renting cars from them. But no, if you do not rent your car from CDG, you can't use the Zig to get riders because Zig is considered a taxi apps, not a ride- hailing Apps. Sorry, this could be a loophole in the law but it is like this currently. | ||||

Ang Mo expertiates will no doubt not fly 20 hours here for meetings but surely they will like our food, sunny weather and our entertainment, or simply use Singapore as a transit hub to explore Bali, Phuket or Vietnam. All these will boost our local land transport, either taxis, PHV, MRT or buses, all these CDG has. Even if these expertiates wants to self drive to Malaysia, CDG has it too.
And don't forget our tourist arrivals have picked up. I don't see why tourists are not coming to Singapore as many as it used to be pre-COVID. We are waiting for China to reopen. So yes, working style change, but human needs don't. Land transport is a intrinsic need of humans, since the time of horse-drawn carriages and bullock carts. Many people long to have face-to-face meetings, face-to-face Workshops, long to travel, even working trips. EV is the future, well CDG already in joint venture with a French company to set up charging stations. Autonomous vehicles, yes, CDG is working with NTU and in fact had a few vehicles running in NTU Campus. Grab, well it has its strength, but I'm sorry to say, its competitors are just too strong for it. SEA Ltd, Über etc. The entry bar of being super apps is just too low. Grab can't make a single cent of profit till date. I'm speculating Grab will be acquired by some bigger company within 3 to 5 years. I do, however, thank Grab for given a wake-up call to CDG, and to provide cheap ride-hailing for people of Singapore in the last 5 years. But no, I'll not miss it when it's gone. |

CDG is aware of the need to build up ride hailing. It's automotive rental business went up 17% primarily due to growth of PHV fleet. It would definitely want these drivers to be part of CDG Zip.
And when autonomous taxis emerge in next decade, CDG can leverage on its vehicle engineering expertise over pure software play such as Grab. |

What are the challenges this 'Land Transport Giant' has to face in the post-Covid era which is just starting now? Can we assume the everything will be back to the pre-Covid era of things? Would the digitalisation of human life stop progressing or even reverse back as if it never happen?
I am disappointed that this 'Land Transport Giant' kept quiet in this awesome report or even assumed that all will be back to normal! Even if this giant doesnt bother, we only need to look around and see how fast 'work-from-home' is taking roots in companies. My son joined a US company recently after his graduation and found that NO ONE is in the office but work / meetings/ marketing/ etc are going on almost non-stop. Even the gov now accept submission only on-line so is there anymore excuse to come to the office to take the documents and rush to do the submission by taking a taxi? How many Ang Mo would still fly for 20 hours here to attend a meeting or two and then fly another 20 hours back home? Yes, many Ang Mo fly in everyday but they are on holidays after Bali or Phukit. If this Zoom Bee being a Land Transport Giant has not done or will not do a study on this, I would say to its investors GOOD LUCK AND TAKE CARE 😅 |

Street hailing is already history. Ask the taxi drivers how many street jobs they get a day. They will tell you one or two. Street hailiing is the most important modus operandi of taxi driving because it brings a out 'one up one down' earning for the drivers. Where are these people who used to flag for taxis in the past? Let me tell you Guru. --- They book Grab.
See for yourself, taxis have to run backnd d forth taxi stands to get their passengers. More than 50% of their driving time their cabs are empty. How many of them get Zig booking jobs? Just see for yourself Guru how many are wearing the 'on- call' signs and speeding -- nobody can bluff you. |

Ride hailing will cannibalise street hailing. Hence CDG zip needs to capture critical market share of ride hailing.
While the number of people trying out Zip is high (see App Store reviews), it seems many are frustrated by the quality of the app which crashes often. CDG needs to prioritize the improvement of Zip app to retain users. |

6,500 is a very ugly number considering that this Zoom Bee was the World's biggest taxi company before. It has already sold its taxicompanies in London and Vietnam. What happens in China now? Even if it avoid revealing the truth, we can just ask any visitor from there or check with our contacts there to see who still remember what a taxi is, we will know the situation.
This show that all its effort to save its taxi business has flopped. The so-called ride-hailing is rubbish looking at the number of blue and yellow colour cabs queuing everywhere particularly at the airport. Which PHV driver dare to rent car from this Zoom Bee if he cannot get booking jobs from Grab?

Understand that it is gone. Normally sale of assets (including profits) will be utilised to drive growth engines but I suspect with the strong balance sheet CDG has.. it could support this 100% special distribution.
As what entropy mentioned about CDG being way off pre-covid. Totally agree.. and with that stock prices also will not rocket as well... but based on recent results, I think it is fair for the near to medium term stock price to range between 1.5 to 1.6 (I hope).

LTA only has the registered numbers of taxis and not leased- out numbers. So if your numbers are from the LTA, it is the total registered with the authorities.
Taxi companies have to maintain 10 to 15% of spare vehicles (in my estimate) to enable smooth operations. Some of these spare vehicles can be lay-off the road to save insurance costs but they are still counted as registered numbers.

Yielding at around 4% at this price with a strong balance sheet. CDG is well positioned.
