Stop Military training in Taiwan.  Do military training in an Asean Country like Thailand, Kampuchea or Philipines.

To put it bluntly, straight to the point. Many of the countries thought that Singapore is arrogant. Small country but talk big. Are we? Look at Switzerland, Luxembourg, Monaco, countries in the Scandinavia, Bhutan....have you heard them bickering or voiced their opinion about world affairs without being asked to comment? Ok, we may have thrived in " audacity" the last 50 years (Read the article by Jarnadas Nair), and be successful today. But that doesn' t mean we should use the same formula the next 50 years. Recognising a changing world is a good start.     |

Likewise, In the early 1970s, the Malaysian call us " Huk Kai Pao" meaning coward spider because whenever our marine saw the Indonesian navy, ours quickly ran back to our shore! |

Remember Taiwan ever looked down on Singapore and call us " pee sai" . Anyway, I believe Singapore should always maintain a neutral stance and not comment about world issues liberally. See, today, who is our real friend? Any?

It is not Spore who sent it to HK. It is APL due to trying to save money by Spore or Mindef. I believe someone betrayed spore (for money?)  by reporting the transist. Spore has been trying to save money  in many areas in order to spend more money in other areas (public transport, medical, social) because of shift slightly to the left in its policy. China had asked Spore to use Hainan Island (if i remember correctly) instead of Taiwan. This causes two difficulties to Spore. 1) Spore cannot train  militarily in China as Spore will be seen by Malaysia and Indonesia as a proxy for China because of its majority  Chinese population. If I remember correctly LKY officially recognised China only after Malaysia and/or Indonesia had done. 2) Spore cannot change the training ground to Hainan and spoil the friendship with Taiwan after so many years of help from them.  The most is that Spore  will not train in Taiwan again, what about training in other Asean Countries such as Thailand, Kampuchea or Phillipines. Spore has been already training in  Brunei.

Moments after Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan said in Parliament yesterday (Jan 9) there was no need to engage in megaphone diplomacy over the Terrex vehicles confiscation, a Singaporean has taken to the microphone, singing about the nine armoured vehicles.
'Give me back my Terrex chia' is a song posted on Youtube yesterday by Alvin Oon. Inspired by dialect songs from the old days, the kitschy song in peppered with colloquial phrases, such as "cannot suka suka (as you please) take from me". - See more at: http://news.asiaone.com/news/singapore/no-megaphone-microphone-diplomacy-singaporean-pens-song-terrex-vehicles#sthash.Qsm6770P.dpuf |

Ng Eng Hen told Parliament that the Terrex Infantry Carrier Vehicles enjoy sovereign immunity and cannot legally be confiscated by other countries.  Singapore must be cautious on the issue of the confiscation of its military vehicles in Hong Kong, said a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Monday (9 January). Someone in Yahoo Forum suggested telling the Chinese to keep the terrex (Trump' s way)  if they are so hardup! If that is the case, will China feels malu? |

T ENGINEERING' S MARINE ARM SECURES NEW ORDERS
![]() Singapore, 19 December 2016  &ndash   Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd (ST Engineering) announced today that its Singapore shipyard, Singapore Technologies Marine Ltd (ST Marine) and its US shipyard, VT Halter Marine Inc (VT Halter Marine) have secured new contracts worth $138m in 4Q2016 in Shipbuilding and Shiprepair. In Singapore, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has awarded a contract to a consortium formed by ST Marine and Penguin International Limited (PIL) for the design, construct and the system maintenance programme for three vessels - Heavy Marine Fire Vessel (HMFV), Heavy Marine Rescue Vessel (HMRV) and Marine Rescue Vessel (MRV). The consortium allows both ST Marine and PIL to leverage on each other&rsquo s capabilities to provide a total package solution to MHA. Construction of the vessels is anticipated to commence in mid-2017 with delivery expected in 2H2019. ST Marine also won several Shiprepair contracts for vessels such as passenger ferry, trailing suction hopper dredger, chemical and oil tankers. &ldquo We are very pleased to be given this opportunity to expand our total services concept to MHA. Given our track record of 50 years, we are confident that we will be able to deliver the products and services on time, within budget and meet the expectations of MHA and the Singapore Civil Defence Force,&rdquo said Mr Ng Sing Chan, President for ST Marine. &ldquo Working with other industry partners such as Penguin International Limited, this project will also ensure that the local marine eco-system is sustained to provide the best services to our valued customers.&rdquo In the United States, the Commonwealth of Virginia, Department of Transportation (VDOT) has awarded a contract to VT Halter Marine to design and construct a 499-passenger / 70-vehicle Jamestown Ferry to replace the current ferry, The Virginian. The ferry will be operated by the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry Operations Service which provides a critical transportation link between Virginia and North Carolina operating at the James City County at Glasshouse Point and Surry County at Scotland Wharf. Construction of the ferry is expected to be completed in April 2018. The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry System currently operates four ferry boats, including the Pocahontas Ferry, which was also designed and constructed by VT Halter Marine in 1995.  VT Halter Marine&rsquo s shipyards have designed and constructed more car and passenger ferries than almost any other U.S. shipyard, for the states of Virginia, New York, Texas, Louisiana, North Carolina, Alaska, California, Washington, and the territory of Puerto Rico. VT Halter Marine has also won several multi-million dollar Shiprepair contracts involving fisheries survey vessels, a towboat and a crane barge. &ldquo VT Halter Marine is honored to be selected by the Virginia Department of Transportation to design, construct and deliver our second quality built vessel.&rdquo said Paul Albert, Chief Executive Officer, VT Halter Marine. &ldquo We value the trust that the VDOT has invested in our shipbuilding capabilities, and this new contract is an indication of our continuing strong relationship.&rdquo These contracts are not expected to have any material impact on the consolidated net tangible assets per share and earnings per share of ST Engineering for the current financial year. ST Marine  (Singapore Technologies Marine Ltd), the marine arm of ST Engineering, provides turnkey building, repair and conversion services for a wide spectrum of naval and commercial vessels. In shipbuilding, it has the proven capabilities to provide turnkey solutions from concept definition to detailed design, construction, on-board system installation and integration, testing, commissioning to through-life support. &lsquo Boring&rsquo engineering company may surprise on the upsideBy:
Gwyneth Yeo
SINGAPORE (Dec 22): ST Engineering is better known for being a defensive stock backed by strong balance sheet and regular dividends. It may even be considered a " boring" stock by all accounts. What is interesting, however, are the new initiatives by the group&rsquo s various business segments that are set to grow earnings and offset the weakness of the marine business, according to DBS Group analyst Suvro Sarkar. For one, ST Aerospace recently partnered Airbus for passenger-to-freighter conversions of A320, A321 and A330 jets. It has also been expanding its cabin interior service solutions business for VIP aircraft, growing its mid-life aircraft leasing business, and tapping into the Chinese MRO market. ST Electronics is also set to benefit from the over $1 billion worth of Smart Nation related projects in Singapore, driven by the government&rsquo s push to use smart technology within the utilities, healthcare, housing and transport industries. The growth opportunities don&rsquo t stop there either. &ldquo The recently launched TeLEOS-1 satellite is now ready to provide commercial imagery services and should herald a new space-centred growth channel for the division,&rdquo said Sarkar, &ldquo We are also seeing increased importance being placed on robotics, which could be another future key growth driver.&rdquo The brokerage has a &ldquo buy&rdquo recommendation on the stock with a target price of $3.68. As it stands, ST Engineering&rsquo s FY17 earnings are already set to improve from FY16 levels, when it announced a one-off $61.1 million in write-downs and closure costs in 3QFY16 after shuttering its Chinese specialty vehicles subsidiary. The group&rsquo s FY16 dividends are also expected to remain unchanged at 15 cents compared with FY15. Shares of ST Engineering closed 7 cents lower at $3.21. LISTENING TO THE FINANCIAL CROWD

Below is a comment by Jm Chow in the Todayonline : Why did China build ..runway and military facilities on islands (occupied and unoccupied) in SCS ? No outsider will really know.the answer ... In the 80s, I lived in Hawaii for a long time and I asked native Hawaiians the same question... why the USA has the largest mililtary bases in Hawaii ? The Pacific islanders claim that the islands belong to them...the USA cheated the Hawaiian monarch, king Kamehameha , and stole the islands from the Hawaiian people. The gigantic US naval base and air bases were very ugly .... eyesores on the beautiful islands among beautiful peoples.... just out of place. This beautiful Hawaiian girl answered: " The USA want to protect the islands from being taken over by others." I believe...China has the same reason! |

From Todayonline dated 6 Dec updated 7 Dec. China had adopted a studious silence with regard to Singapore&rsquo s unofficial relationship with Taiwan and the SAF&rsquo s regular training in Taiwan. No longer. The side effects of the Terrex incident are an open call from China&rsquo s Foreign Ministry for Singapore to respect the &ldquo One China&rdquo principle and not-so-subtle hints that Singapore needs to terminate military cooperation with Taiwan. No doubt Singapore&rsquo s refusal of China&rsquo s offer of training space in Hainan to replace Taiwan further rankles Chinese sensibilities. The latter point, however, is disingenuous. Singapore and Taiwan have retained their informal relationship, and Taiwan continues to permit Singapore to conduct military training there, even though there is no military relationship between the two islands. The damage, however little, is done. While Singapore will exercise its &ldquo full rights&rdquo in recovering the vehicles currently impounded in Hong Kong, it is difficult to see what instruments Singapore can use as leverage to expedite their recovery. That the vehicles will be returned to Singapore is beyond doubt It is merely a question of how long Singapore will have to wait before they are returned. That waiting time is a message from China to Singapore. |
