x 0   x 0  Alert Admin	Straits Times Index 2,736.06     0.04%     +1.15   Volume: 2,614.1M Value: $848.1M Gainers/Losers: 200/227 Singapore shares close mixed as pennies take over led by ISR, Liongold, Blumont INTEREST in blue chips has dipped sharply over the past few weeks but although dollar volume on Monday was still heavily concentrated in the 30 Straits Times Index (STI) components, speculative small caps were the main volume play, led by some of the names involved in the penny stock crash of October 2013. These included LionGold, Blumont and Attilan Group, the latter being the new name of Asiasons Capital which - together with LionGold and Blumont - were the three central players 31 months ago whose collapse triggered spillover selling of the entire small cap sector. The STI, in the meantime, managed a 1.15 point rise to 2,736.06 but it was the pennies which occupied most of the market' s attention. The leader of the penny surge this time was fund manager ISR Capital, which last Monday traded for S $ 0.006 but this Monday rose S $ 0.035 or 42.7 per cent to S $ 0.117 on volume of 43.5 million, a gain of 1,850 per cent in six trading sessions . The Singapore Exchange (SGX) in the morning dispatched queries to LionGold, Blumont, Annica Holdings and Jadason Enterprises. Of these, only Blumont and Jadason replied before 5 pm, both saying essentially that they did not know of reasons for the sudden interest in its shares. Jadason was the best performer of those queried, its shares surging S $ 0.028 or 215 per cent to S $ 0.041 on turnover of 77.7 million. Meanwhile, brokers were at a loss to describe the burst of interest in pennies, other than speculate that with the current weakness in blue chips set to continue for a while longer, traders were turning to the lowest-priced counters to try and make money.

x 0   x 0  Alert Admin	China: Stocks post modest gains despite disappointing economic data China stocks rebounded on Monday after the securities regulator denied media reports it was cracking down on fundraising and mergers and acquisitions in certain sectors, helping to offset disappointing April economic data. The blue-chip CSI300 index rose 0.7 per cent to 3,095.31 points, while the Shanghai Composite Index gained 0.8 per cent to 2,850.86 points. The market had dropped for four weeks in a row amid increasing concerns that a recent pick-up in China' s economic activity may be fizzling out. Confidence was also hit last week by media reports saying China would suspend additional fundraising and M & As in four industries, including online finance, gaming, film and virtual reality. But most stocks in those sectors rose on Monday after the securities regulator denied the report late on Friday and said it would continue to support M & As by qualified listed companies, with no change to existing policies. Although data released over the weekend showed that China' s investment, factory output and retail sales all grew more slowly than expected in April, traders said much of the impact had already been priced in. All main sectors rose, with IT shares leading the rise.

x 0   x 0  Alert Admin	Asia closes higher Chinese shares reverse losses, Shanghai up 0.8% 49 Mins Ago Asian markets ended mostly higher on Monday, as traders shrugged off data released over the weekend that revived concerns over the Chinese economy. Japan' s Nikkei 225 pared some of its over 1 percent gains from early morning to close up 54.19 points, or 0.33 percent, at 16,466.40, while across the Korean Strait, the Kospi ended near flat at 1,967.91. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index was up 0.58 percent as of 3:05 pm HK / SIN. Chinese mainland markets reversed their morning losses, with the Shanghai composite closing up 23.82 points, or 0.84 percent, at 2,850.93, and the Shenzhen composite ended higher by 30.69 points, or 1.72 percent, at 1,815.02. Some analysts said despite the strong data, performance in the equity market will also drive the U.S. Federal Reserve' s decision on whether to hike interest rates in June or stand pat. On Monday morning before market open, Bank of Japan (BOJ) data showed Japan' s producer price index for April fell 4.2 percent on-year, compared to a Reuters poll that expected a 3.7 percent on-year decline. The yen traded at 108.74 against the dollar, compared to its last close at 108.60 and a Monday session high of 108.97. The marginal weakness, however, was not enough to give exporters a boost. Most major Japanese exporters closed mixed, with shares of Nissan up 0.53 percent, while Sony shares dropped 1.28 percent. Usually a weaker yen is a positive for export stocks as it boosts their overseas profits when converted into the local currency. Yen traders will also be watching for Japan' s first quarter gross domestic product numbers due this week. A Reuters' poll showed that market watchers expect Japan to register an annualized growth rate of 0.2 percent for the January through March period. " Growth is expected to turn positive after a negative quarter and given the market' s focus on the timing of BOJ easing, stronger or weaker growth could have an unusually significant impact on the yen," said Lien.
