x 0   x 0  Alert Admin	Asia markets set to lose ground amid Fed fears Asia markets may fall Wednesday, tracking declines on Wall Street as concerns that the Federal Reserve will soon hike interest rates returned to the fore. Japan' s benchmark Nikkei 225 index may give back some of Tuesday' s 1.13 percent gain, with CME Nikkei futures trading at 16,600 and Osaka Nikkei futures at 16,590, both below the closing level of 16,652.80. The Federal Open Market Committee is scheduled to release its April meeting minutes at 2 p.m. ET Wednesday and many analysts are concerned the minutes could be more hawkish than the statement that followed April' s meeting. Japan' s gross domestic product data (GDP), due minutes before market open, will be closely watched on Wednesday. U.S. crude oil futures settled up 59 cents, or 1.2 percent, at $ 48.31 a barrel, its highest since October. Brent settled above $ 49 a barrel.

Oil gained amid near-term supply outages, as a wildfire in Canada prompted evacuation of about 4,000 people from work camps outside the Fort McMurray oil hub, Reuters said. Despite the gains in oil, selling in stocks accelerated in afternoon trade. The rate-sensitive 2-year Treasury yield rose to its highest in more than two weeks as bond traders looked ahead to Wednesday' s release of the Fed meeting minutes, which many feared could be more hawkish than the statement. That fear was echoed in comments from San Francisco Fed President John Williams and Atlanta Fed President Dennis Lockhart who said in a Reuters report the Fed could still raise rates two or three times this year. Neither are voting members of the Fed, and markets are most focused on comments from Fed Chair Janet Yellen. She is scheduled to speak June 6 at a World Affairs Council of Philadelphia luncheon, according to a late Monday announcement. Guy LeBas, chief fixed income strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott, said the timing of the speech ahead of the Fed' s June meeting means the comments are " going to preempt the Fed minutes." The Federal Open Market Committee is scheduled to release its April meeting minutes at 2 p.m. ET Wednesday. " Could be a little investor anxiety at the moment," said John Caruso, senior market strategist at RJO Futures. He expects the general tone of the Fed to remain dovish. In U.S. economic news, industrial production rose 0.7 percent in April. Capacity utilization was 75.4 percent. The Consumer Price Index rose 0.4 percent in April, the Labor Department said. Ex-food and energy, the index rose 0.2 percent last month, or 2.1 percent over the last 12 months. That compares with a 2.2 percent rise for the 12 months ending march. Blue chips in the meantime rebounded strongly, though short-covering undoubtedly played a part after nearly two weeks of relentless selling that saw the index lose 226 points or 7.7 per cent in 15 trading sessions. Tuesday' s bounce of 45.05 points or 1.65 per cent ensured that the 2016 closing low of 2,539 on Feb 12 would not be tested, at least not yet. Despite the index' s display of strength, the broad market recorded only 268 rises versus 156 falls, excluding warrants. Turnover was 1.8 billion units worth S $ 1.18 billion, of which S $ 905 million or 77 per cent came from the 30 STI components. All three banks rose, though all had been heavily battered after releasing their first-quarter numbers over the past fortnight. Also pushing the index higher was Thai Beverage, which jumped S $ 0.045 or 5.4 per cent to S $ 0.875 on volume of 108.6 million. In a May 16 report, OCBC Investment Research described Thai Beverage' s recent results as good and kept its " buy" rating, with a fair value estimate of S $ 0.83 based on a discounted cash flow analysis.   Elsewhere, activity in penny speculatives that erupted on Monday was relatively muted after trading restrictions were imposed on some, such as Attilan, Blumont, Jadason, LionGold and ISR Capital. All these counters ended the day weaker.

In Asian trade, US crude oil futures tacked on 1.09 percent to $ 48.24 a barrel by 3:43 pm SIN / HK time, after rising 3.16 percent by the US settlement, while Brent added 0.63 percent to $ 49.28 a barrel after settling up 2.38 percent, with both reaching their highest settlement Monday since late last year. The gains came on growing Nigerian oil output disruptions and after long-time bear Goldman Sachs said the market had flipped to a deficit, ending almost two years of oversupply. " The increasing intensity in supply-side disruptions in the oil market should see prices well supported in the short term," ANZ said in a morning note Tuesday, adding that the rise in crude prices helped to boost commodities and commodity currencies overnight.
