Markets shrug off Thailand' s coup
Analysts optimistic that military takeover could steer country back on the right track

INVESTORS greeted Thailand' s latest military takeover with shrugs and a shake of the head yesterday. That' s what one coup every seven years will do for you. Observers mostly expect the coup to bring near-term stability to Thailand, although concerns are more acute about the future of the country. Thailand' s main equity benchmark, the SET Index, touched a two-week low at yesterday' s opening, but climbed steadily over the day to head out at 1,396.84, down 0.6 per cent or 8.37 points on the day. The Thai baht lost ground as well, to 32.6070 baht per US dollar, about 0.1 per cent weaker on the day but still not the worst performance of the month. Singapore' s key Thailand exposed stocks were mostly untouched. Drinks maker Thai Beverage Public Co gained 1.7 per cent, or one cent, to close at 60.5 cents. Readymade drinks supplier Super Group was flat at $2.86, while United Overseas Bank was 0.09 per cent, or two cents, lower at $22.35. " So far, the recent developments in Thailand have minimal impact on the Singapore market or stocks," said OCBC head of research Carmen Lee. UOB Kay Hian research head Andrew Chow thought there could be marginal benefits for Singapore. " Indirectly, it might be that people pull money out of Thailand, and they want to park some money in Singapore, but that would mostly go to the more defensive blue chips," he said. The coup, Thailand' s 12th since 1932, has ushered in a sense of annoyance but also relief that the political impasse that has kept the country at a standstill for the past six months could finally end. " One of my colleagues is there," Mr Chow said. " It' s more a feeling of inconvenience rather than fear or violence." In a note, ANZ wrote: " The imposition of military coup is certainly not the type of development typically associated with an improving economic outlook. However, in the case of Thailand, it could well prove to be the circuit breaker that allows a return to political normalisation and ultimately allows fiscal policy to become operational again." But the very factors that have led some to welcome military intervention also make it critical that the army makes the right moves in the months ahead. Amid the past political fighting, the Thai economy contracted 0.6 per cent year-on-year in the first three months of 2014, with investment and tourism showing significant declines, Moody' s Analytics highlighted in a note. " Given recent events, we now think the economy will record a second negative quarter in the three months to June, putting it in recession," Moody' s wrote. RHB reckoned that private sector confidence will be muted while the military is in power, based on weak private spending during the 2006 coup. Nevertheless, some analysts conveyed optimism that this coup could actually steer Thailand back on the right track. " Unlike previous military crackdowns in 2006 and 2010, the current peaceful coup may well create a stable social environment - a key ingredient in supporting market sentiment and ensuring a successful democratic election in Q3 2014," OCBC economist Barnabas Gan wrote.   |

CPFIS-included funds up marginally in Q1
Bond funds post a positive return of 1.43%, better than equity funds and mixed assets funds

CPFIS-included unit trusts gained 0.41 per cent, while investment-linked insurance funds (ILPs) gained 0.26 per cent.
By asset types, CPFIS-included bond funds posted a positive return of 1.43 per cent, better than equity funds and mixed assets funds which rose 0.14 per cent and 0.34 per cent, respectively. A similar pattern was reflected in other indices. The first quarter saw the key benchmark equity index, MSCI World TR USD, increase by a meagre 0.99 per cent, while the benchmark Citigroup World Government Bond Index increased by 2.25 per cent this quarter. This could signal risk aversion, with investors preferring safer haven assets - such as bond funds - even if they offer lower rates of returns. Xav Feng, head of Asia-Pacific research for Lipper, the fund research firm which monitors the performance of all CPFIS funds, noted that the US Federal Reserve has sent a clear message that the interest rates are likely to stay low in the foreseeable future. " Investors have interpreted that to mean that interest rates are not likely to increase until the middle of next year at the earliest, following the end of the recent asset purchase programme." He also cited risks in Europe: " The crisis in Ukraine is causing concerns around regional stability. While these uncertainties persist, investors should consider the impact of global money flows, the state of the US economy and regional strife when reviewing their portfolios and making investment decisions." Over a one-year period, CPFIS funds averaged a positive return of 6.31 per cent. Unit trusts rose 7.14 per cent ILPs rose 5.74 per cent. This time, investors who used their CPF savings to buy equity funds would have done better than those that invested in bond funds. They would have enjoyed an 8.55 per cent rate of return on average, versus just 0.3 per cent from bond funds. During this period, the MSCI World TR USD index soared 21.35 per cent, while the Citigroup World Government Bond Index TR rose by 2.75 per cent in Singapore-dollar terms. Year 2013 had seen bullish sentiment in developed markets, particularly the US and Europe, as better growth prospects in both economies led investors to move their funds out of bonds into higher-yield equities.   |

As a bank with a long-standing presence in China and the wider region, even we have been surprised by the rapid speed with which the RMB has developed since the currency took its first baby steps outside mainland China in the early 2000s.
Fast forward to 2020, and the RMB will have grown very significantly in stature. What will this new business environment look like? We think 28 per cent of China&rsquo s trade will be denominated in RMB, twice the level of today. If we&rsquo re right, the RMB will become the world&rsquo s fourth most used trading currency behind the US dollar, the euro and the British pound. The US dollar, euro and RMB foreign exchange and rates markets will dominate global financial markets, with RMB foreign exchange turnover exceeding USD500 billion, up from USD120 billion today. And offshore RMB markets will have grown massively, with the RMB bond market reaching the USD500 billion mark. RMB internationalisation a high priority for the Chinese government China&rsquo s capital account will essentially be open, albeit with some remaining prudential controls, monitoring of large flows and intervention at times of stress. Direct investment will flow much more easily than today, and the established Chinese quotas for portfolio flows will be expanded significantly. With RMB internationalisation a high priority for the Chinese government, much will happen even in the next couple of years. Global RMB liquidity will be a reality as soon as 2015, with a fully operational cross-border RMB payment system.
Already, we&rsquo re seeing early movers among global corporates reap the rewards of RMB adoption, as they extract more value from their Chinese supply chains and manage RMB liquidity and foreign exchange risk more efficiently. Meanwhile, central banks and sovereign wealth funds have started buying RMB assets, with 16 institutions &ndash including the central banks of Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, India, Indonesia and Korea &ndash now operating on the onshore China Foreign Exchange Trading System, through quotas granted by the People&rsquo s Bank of China. The real question is how you renminbi, not if The internationalisation of the RMB will not be without challenges, but the currency&rsquo s path to becoming a global currency is irreversible. It&rsquo s being driven not only by the increasing dominance of China&rsquo s economy, but also the political will of the new Chinese leaders |

North Korea fires shells near South Korea warship on Thursday

[SEOUL] North Korea on Thursday fired shells into waters near a South Korean warship on patrol south of the disputed Yellow Sea border, prompting an evacuation of residents on a nearby island, officials said.
Two shells fell near the South Korean ship, which was sailing near the frontline island of Yeonpyeong, the South' s defence ministry said. Residents on the island were advised to move to civilian shelters and nearby fishing boats were told to return to port. North Korea shelled Yeonpyeong in November 2010, killing four South Koreans, briefly triggering concerns of a full-scale conflict.   |

Thai army stages coup after six-month political stalemate
Standing guard: Thai soldiers outside the Army Club in Bangkok, where the army chief was holding a meeting yesterday with all the rival factions to discuss possible resolutions to the nation' s governance crisis. -  PHOTO: REUTERS [BANGKOK] Thailand' s powerful army chief took control of the country yesterday and suspended the Constitution after a six- month crisis that has sapped economic growth and caused political paralysis, staging the military' s 12th coup since 1932. Two days after declaring martial law and saying there was no coup, General Prayuth Chan-ocha announced on national television alongside senior military officials that he was seizing control in order to restore peace. He announced a daily nationwide curfew from 10pm to 5am and banned political protests and gatherings of more than five people. All regular TV and radio programmes have been suspended and only army broadcasts are allowed. " To restore peace back to the country in a short time and to reform the country' s politics, economy and society, the Thai military, army, navy, air force and police have seized power from May 22 onward," Gen Prayuth said.   |

Thursday&rsquo s Close:
Stocks gain thanks to Best Buy, Dollar Tree
Click for more market data. Close, but no cigar. The S& P 500 flirted with a new high Thursday, but didn' t quite get there. The Dow Jones industrial average, the S& P 500 and the Nasdaq all closed with gains. Earlier, the S& P 500 came within one point of its record high from last week. The gains build on momentum from Wednesday, when the Dow surged more than 160 points. HP tech error? In an apparent error, Hewlett-Packard (HPQ, Fortune 500) released its latest quarterly report early. The computer company' s stock fell more than 2% just before the closing bell. HP' s earnings were in line with expectations, but the company announced plans to lay off an additional 11,000 to 16,000 job cuts on top of the previously announced 34,000 job cuts. Is Best Buy getting its groove back? Over in retail stock land, Best Buy (BBY, Fortune 500) shares were up as much as 5% after the electronics retailer reported earnings that beat analysts' expectations, raising hopes the company' s turnaround plan is bearing fruit. The stock was down sharply in the futures market before active trading started. It ended the day up 3.4%. Some traders on StockTwits were surprised to see Best Buy shares bounce back. In economic news, the government said first-time claims for unemployment benefits rose sharply in the week ended May 17. Sales of existing homes rose 1.3% in April, according to the National Association of Realtors. Related: CNNMoney' s Tech30 European markets ended modestly higher. Asian markets closed mostly higher, buoyed by better-than-expected manufacturing data from China. Stocks in Thailand were little changed despite news that military officials had taken control of the government, marking the latest in a string of coups in the past few decades.   |

Investors are getting out of U.S. stocks By Matt Egan May 22, 2014: 6:37 AM ET
Stocks may be near record highs, but investors are  getting out. New data  released Wednesday show investors have slashed their exposure to U.S. stocks in recent weeks, choosing instead to pile into bonds or simply hold cash. Many are still fearful of another major drop in the stock market, and they aren' t sure how to read the current conditions. It' s a  peculiar period in the market with tumbling small-cap stocks, diminished volatility and low interest rates for the foreseeable future. " Investors' fear over the equity market has not faded from the crisis. That may need a generation to pass," said Brian Rehling, chief fixed income strategist at Wells Fargo Advisors, which manages about $1.4 trillion in assets. It' s clear that trepidation is leading at least some investors to  back off  -- even as many strategists stress the need to stay exposed to stocks as the economy improves. Related: Why are bond yields so low? Investors yanked about $8.2 billion from U.S. long-term equity mutual funds during the three weeks ending May 14, according to  the Investment Company Institute. These funds were hit by $2.3 billion in net outflows in the final week alone. By comparison, domestic stock funds experienced net inflows of $4.1 billion during the prior three-week period that ended April 23, according to ICI stats. The money coming out of stocks  is increasingly flowing into bonds, helping to drive interest rates unexpectedly lower. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury plunged below 2.5% last week for the first time since Halloween. ICI said bond funds generated $4 billion of inflows during the week ended May 14, contributing to a three-week influx of $10.4 billion. In fact, bond funds have enjoyed positive flows every month this year except January. The CNNMoney Fear & Greed Index stood at 25 on Wednesday, indicating " extreme fear." That' s down from 89 a year ago, which signaled " extreme greed." Related: 3 tech stocks worth buying now Wells Fargo Advisors has only experienced " some modest outflows" from  equity funds, Rehling said, adding that it' s been " nothing that is moving the needle." He said that disparity could be due to the fact that Wells Fargo, like many brokerages, has far less exposure to the small-cap stocks that have been under assault in recent months. Most of its investors stick with large cap stocks. Last week, the Russell 2000 index of small-cap stocks fell into correction territory (market jargon for a 10% fall from a prior high). While Wells Fargo isn' t necessarily seeing a rush out of stocks, Rehling said many clients continue to hold " exceptionally large" amounts of cash in their portfolios. He' s advised them to have the courage to deploy that cash into the stock market when opportunities arise. " Stay the course. Stay well diversified. When you do get pullbacks, take advantage and move cash off the sidelines," Rehling said. CNN |

China manufacturing index hits five-month high: HSBC

[BEIJING] Chinese manufacturing activity saw a sharp improvement in May, hitting a five-month high, HSBC said Tuesday, but it warned more government action was needed to kickstart the world' s number two economy. The British banking giant said in a statement its preliminary purchasing managers' index (PMI), which tracks activity in the nation' s factories and workshops, came in at 49.7 this month, well up from a final reading of 48.1 in April. The index is a closely watched gauge of the health of the Asian economic powerhouse and key driver of global growth. But while the figure is the best since December' s 50.5, it is still below the 50-point break-even level suggesting the sector is still contracting.   |
