Asian markets open mixed Over the weekend, a Japanese government source told news media that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe would most likely postpone the consumption tax hike for fear of upsetting the fragile economy. In the energy markets, Brent crude was trading at $ 49.38 a barrel, after climbing as high as $ 50.51 last Friday, while U.S. crude was trading at $ 49.41, up 8 cents from its last settlement. Asian markets set for modestly higher open Futures pointed to a higher open for Asian stocks on Monday, after Wall Street ended Friday' s session with solid weekly gains. The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 0.25percent at 17,873.22 on Friday, while the S & P 500 ended 0.43 percent higher at 2,099.06 and the Nasdaq composite closed up 0.5 percent at 4,926. Japan' s benchmark Nikkei 225 index looks likely to rise, with CME Nikkei futures up 0.3 percent at 16,985 and Osaka futures up 0.2 percent at 16,860, compared to Friday' s close at 16,834.84. Markets will likely watch Japan' s April retail sales for hints of improvement in domestic consumption. Analysts told CNBC last Friday that the Japanese government would most likely postpone the consumption tax hike for fear of upsetting the fragile economy. |

Stocks close higher after Yellen Dow, S & P post best week since March U.S. stocks closed higher Friday, posting a solid week of gains, after Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen said an interest rate hike in the next few months would probably be appropriate. " The important thing is she is backing up what the minutes are saying and (recent Fed speakers) have been saying," Art Hogan, chief market strategist at Wunderlich Securities, said on CNBC. Ahead of Monday' s Memorial Day holiday, stocks held solid gains for the week, which saw oil briefly top $ 50 and some encouraging data on the housing market, amid more Fed policymakers saying rates could rise sooner rather than later. " I was surprised she actually spoke about it. ... The only (thing) I got with what she said is it puts potentially a little uncertainty into the June 6 speech if and only if the jobs number is a little weak on the 3rd , " said Jeremy Klein, chief market strategist at FBN Securities. He noted Yellen' s comments were" nothing new. " Jeffrey Gundlach, CEO of DoubleLine Capital, said Yellen is more dovish than her colleagues and her remarks Friday " does not suggest" a hike in June, Reuters reported. While traders hope Yellen will drop monetary policy clues in her afternoon comments, expectations are for more clarity at her speech scheduled for June 6, after the release of the May jobs report. " If Yellen should indicate a rate hike is around the corner then I think we could see some profit-taking ahead of the long weekend," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at First Standard Financial. US crude oil futures settled down 15 cents, or 0.30 percent, at $ 49.33 a barrel after topping $ 50 intraday Thursday. The US oil rig count showed a decline of 2 in the last week, for a drop of 330 year-over-year, Baker Hughes said. European stocks closed mildly higher. The German DAX gained 3.7 percent for the week and the Euro STOXX Banks index gained nearly 5.7 percent, both their best weeks since mid-April. Read more .... |

Singapore shares close higher for week - was it month-ending window-dressing? OTHER than the Singapore Exchange announcing it is in exclusive talks to buy London' s Baltic Exchange and oil prices rising above US $ 50 per barrel for the first time in seven months, there was not much else to talk about in the past week. Granted, the Straits Times Index managed a third weekly rise, this time by 37 points or 1.3 per cent to 2,802.51, but you would not know it from the deathly silence in trading rooms and from conversations with trading representatives. There' s also the possibility that since most of this rise came on Friday when the index jumped 29.2 points, month-ending window-dressing could have played a part. Then there' s liquidity - or rather, the lack of it Friday' s rise came with the week' s best volume done -. 781 million units worth S $ 916.1 million, of which S $ 659 million or 72 per cent was done in the 30 index components. |

Hong Kong shares end at 3-week high on hopes of more China link-ups Hong Kong shares reversed morning losses and closed at a three-week high on Friday, buoyed by hopes that Beijing will soon expand cross-border investment opportunities between Hong Kong and China. The Hang Seng index rose 0.9 per cent to 20,576.77 points, bringing its gains this week to 3.6 per cent. The China Enterprises Index gained 0.8 per cent to 8,595.28. Traders said buying interest revived on talk that China will soon approve a long-touted plan to link the Shenzhen and Hong Kong stock markets, while also expanding the Shanghai-Hong Kong connect programme, launched in late 2014. The Hong Kong stock exchange responded by saying that expansion of the Shanghai-Hong Kong Connect needs careful consideration, and the bourse has no knowledge of when the Shenzhen scheme will be kicked off, China' s Securities News reported on its website. |

Asia markets mostly higher as traders await cues from Yellen on rates Stocks across Asia made small gains Friday ahead of comments expected later in the day from Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen and as oil prices slipped below $ 50 a barrel. Gauging the US central bank' s pace for increasing interest rates has been at the forefront of investors' consideration ahead of the bank' s decision on monetary policy in June, when some think the Fed will raise rates by a quarter percentage point. Investors in Asia will be closely watching comments from Ms. Yellen when she speaks at Harvard University. Interest-rate futures are pricing in a 26% chance the Fed raises rates at its meeting in June, up from 4% earlier this month but down from 34% the previous day, according to CME Group. Oil prices touched a psychologically key level of $ 50 a barrel on Thursday, before retreating. As of 10:28 a.m. HK / SIN, global benchmark Brent futures were down 0.63 percent to $ 49.28 a barrel, while U.S. crude futures shed 0.59 percent to $ 49.19. Markets in Asia were mostly higher on the final trading day of the week as traders awaited direction from U.S. Federal Reserve chief Janet Yellen' s comments due later. Japan' s Nikkei 225 traded up 0.44 percent after data showed consumer prices in April fell, likely putting additional pressure on the Bank of Japan to ease at its next monetary policy meeting, set for June. Before market open, Japan' s Statistics Bureau released the consumer price index (CPI) for April, which showed a 0.3 percent annual decline in core CPI, which excludes food prices but counts oil products. It was a tad better than the median Reuters poll estimate of a 0.4 percent fall. Japan' s shares may also be getting support after Reuters reported, citing local media reports, that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is considering delaying a planned sales tax hike for two years. That may assuage concerns that the sales tax hike could damp already weak economic growth. Across the Korean Strait, the Kospi traded up 0.21 percent. Down Under, the ASX 200 advanced 0.51 percent, even as the energy and materials sub-indexes came under pressure, down 0.35 and 0.17 percent, respectively. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index was down 0.32 percent. Chinese mainland markets traded modestly, with the Shanghai composite nearly flat, and the Shenzhen composite up 0.15 percent. |

Nasdaq ekes out 3-day winning streak ahead of Yellen U.S. stocks closed narrowly mixed Thursday, with investors looking ahead to comments from Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen. Yellen is expected to answer questions Friday afternoon as she receives an award at Harvard University. " I expect her to say some pretty dovish things, but I may be in the minority," said Randy Warren, chief investment officer at Warren Financial, adding he does not expect the US central bank to hike next month. " We do not have the growth rate [to hike]. " He also said the last time the Fed raised rates with economic growth this weak was in 1960. Market expectations for a Fed rate hike were 26 percent on Thursday, according to the CME Group' s FedWatch tool. Investors also kept an eye on U.S. oil prices, which topped $ 50 a barrel to hit its highest in intraday trade since early October, before settling 8 cents lower at $ 49.48 a barrel. " I think the fact oil was up over $ 50 and now in the low $ 49s is just (causing) a little bit of weakness. But that' s all noise," said James Meyer, chief investment officer at Tower Bridge Advisors. He said stocks were pausing amid lack of major news as the major averages held near recent highs.
