This sounds like a good one.  While I' d still take it with a pinch, may two pinches, of salt, I' d say it' s not that far-fetched either.  The potential synergies, cost savings n power of being a huge main  player in the forefront of the global rig-building business are immense.    I' d sometimes wondered why, in practical spore, we had thought it fit n necessary to have  two GLCs doing the same business n competing in this manner.  If such a merger does eventually take place, then my guess wld be in tte form of an offer from KC for Smarine.  So, for those brave souls who think can pok (I' m not one of them,  for now), maybe can start thinking  abt valuations .... but what wld it be?  Mil$ qn.

Is a mega-merger afoot for Keppel and Sembcorp Marine?
Consolidation isn' t such a far-fetched idea, analysts say. Keppel and Sembcorp are bitter rivals in the offshore and marine space, but analysts note that the two giants might well be forced to merge in order to weather escalating headwinds in the sector. A report by DBS said that consolidation is possible for both companies, as restructuring will allow the two rigbuilders to streamline their cost structure and improve their competitiveness on the international front. DBS noted that in the previous downcycle, Singapore shipyards went through a  major consolidation during the late 1990s, where various  mergers resulted in the formation of the two government-owned shipyard groups. This time, the shipbuilders are facing an even greater challenge, with contract wins sinking to record lows and manpower woes adding insult to injury. " This may force the yards to look for ways to restructure. We do  not rule out restructuring, mergers and acquisitions possibilities,  as any cost rationalisation exercises will boost competitiveness  of Singapore yards amid rising competition from Korea and  China, and the added burden of operating shipyards in Brazil," said the report. &ldquo A potential merger of KepSMM will create a global champion with a powerful combination - Keppel&rsquo s market leadership, branding, and greater overseas experience plus SMM&rsquo s world class facilities in Singapore and Brazil, which complement Keppel&rsquo s older facilities. KepSMM will account for almost one-third of the global market share for drilling rigs by orderbook,&rdquo DBS noted. |

With all the uncertainty surrounding investments in OnG infrastructure n dropping rig count in the States as well as  the ongoing  investigations in Brazil on allegations of corruption abt cntract awards, may be best to avoid first.  True, KC is cld be the subject of the Brazilian probe now.  But u can never tell what' s next.

3Q15 results way below estimates, as net profit slumped 75.7% y/y to $32.1m, on a 34% drop in revenue to $1.1b. The weak topline was mainly due to fewer rig deliveries (-43.4% to $743.8m) on deferments by customers as well as lower ship repair (-16.5% to $131.4m) revenue mitigated by contributions from offshore platforms (+6.6% to $234.7m). Operating margin fell 3.4ppt to 6.6%. Bottom line was further pressured by associate/JV losses of $24.4m (3Q14: $2.6m profit). Order book stood at $11.6b (2Q15: $10.9b) with YTD order wins of $2.9b. NAV/share at $1.43.  |

Keppel, Sembcorp Marine profit slide on weak offshore business
COMMENTSSHARE OCT 22, 20156:55 PM [SINGAPORE] Singapore's two major rig builders, Keppel Corporation Ltd and Sembcorp Marine Ltd, on Thursday posted sharp declines in their third-quarter profit, reflecting weakness in the offshore rig market. Keppel, one of the world's biggest offshore drilling rig builders, said its quarterly net profit fell 12 per cent on the year to S$363 million on revenue that slipped 23 per cent to S$2.4 billion. Meanwhile, cross-town rival Sembcorp Marine said its third-quarter net profit shrivelled 76 per cent on the year to S$32.1 million - its lowest quarterly earnings since the last three months of 2007. The global rig market has been in the doldrums this year, as exploration and production budget cuts at oil companies have not only weighed on charter rates and reduced the number of jobs available, but also dried up the flow of new rig orders. |
