market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing scale in the long run u know when i mention tigerair to my friends (mostly uni students), i believe that many will associate tigerair with frequent cancellations and this will negatively affect sales, not too sure if it is still like that... anyway, tigerair is but a small fraction of SIA market cap. they can easily afford to wipe out tigerair, albeit at the cost of the equity or cash holdings.  i' m not saying tigerair is a bad or lousy investment (surely, nothing can be a bad investment at a cheap enough price), but SIA certainly can perform much better WITHOUT tigerair they already have silkair and scoot... how many cannibalistic lines do they wanna have?

Bro Tigerair although stuck in a rut will start to show improvement over time. All bad deals already wiped off   its books.............from here on will show improvement albeit slowly... Sigh i have shares in there as well. Stuck but i have holding power. Dont want to realise a loss. As   of Monday Tigerair became a subsidiary of SQ. If it continues to make a loss do you think SIA will file bankruptcy? NO. What they might do is what they did a few years ago gave Sats shares to SQ holders. So maybe they might do some sort of conversion. Just wishful thinking. Look at SIA price today 10.29.

yeah, airasia (i think) has recently implemented a new cargo shipping division, something like UPS to capitalize on unutilized space.  online shopping is more prevalent clearly, qn is whether SIA can form strategic alliances with SingPost or UPS to create a shipping network, or form their own new system (which i feel is simply too competitive to work in a saturated perfectly competitive market) that being said about SIA ENG, it' s PE is really very high, i think its 1 S.D. higher than the past 5 years average - despite the lacklustre results? u know what would push this stock higher? just getting rid of tigerair.

Warren Buffet doesnt like airline stocks DUHHH! America is flooded with so many options.   America with it' s weather, cancellations and many carriers   are what is putting him off. That said airline stocks ther have jumped 10/15% because of oil. In Asia SIA is one of the most reliable airlines. I agree the glory days of 15/16 are over but it is still a blue chip. On a down day like yesterday for other stocks, SIA was still flying high...........They are not leaders in the industry by following others! Engineering not doing well because they have stiff competition from other providers like Lufhansa Technics etc etc. But IATA has said that with cheap feul it sees cargo improving next year and all SIA needs is to show that Cargo, which has been a laggard so far, has turned a corner for this stock to jump even higher. DYODD. |

Agree with you that they should be improving sales and they will...........With low feul they will remove taxes in a matter of time. Stock is riding high and will go up more judging by the Business Times article today stating that there is more upside as there will be a glut of oil in Jan/ Feb period. Had 9 lots but sold 3 lots ...too early at 10.88. Holding on to the rest till i see Brent Crude rising. Right now market not trading on fundamental but sentiment and as long as there is more money in the hands, this stock should do well. Dividends rose this year and i m sure next year will be good too. Thanks for advise. Good Luck to you.

" Recession is when you have to tighten your belt depression is when you have no belt to tighten. When you' ve lost your trousers - you' re in the airline business."     &mdash Sir Adam Thomson " The worst sort of business is one that grows rapidly, requires significant capital to engender the growth, and then earns little or no money. Think airlines. Here a durable competitive advantage has proven elusive ever since the days of the Wright Brothers. Indeed, if a farsighted capitalist had been present at Kitty Hawk, he would have done his successors a huge favor by shooting Orville down."                                                                                                 &mdash Warren Buffett, annual letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders, February 2008.   |

Noted investor Warren Buffett continues to decry airline investing even though he didn&rsquo t lose any money on his most famous airline investment. At the recent Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting, Buffett responded negatively when asked a question about airline investing. &ldquo Investors have poured their money into airlines and airline manufacturers for 100 years with terrible results,&rdquo Buffett said, according to TheStreet TST -1.45%. &ldquo It&rsquo s been a death trap for investors,&rdquo he said of the airline industry, after he was asked whether airline consolidation has altered his long-standing view that investors should stay away from airlines.   |

careful when trading this share, even for LT. oil costs are coming down, yes, granted that it forms a majority of their costs - and essentially their costs will be going down. BUT, flights (full or not) will still burn fuel.  qn is: lackluster global economy, competitive regional travel - SIA business class tix which forms most of their rev will be badly affected, tigerair - the share price speaks for itself and its ability to compete in regional air travel. SIA' s share buybacks are the only things supporting the price - qn is there better use for the money? PE at 64 - shouldnt they try to find ways to improve air tix sales instead of buying back of shares which i think is less effective in the long run? dont forget their SIA ENG subsidiary isnt doing well too - quarterly results are poor. shows that not only aviation is not performing, ancillary support services aren' t either. demand from china especially luxury travel will slow due to corruption clamp down and regional travel from giants like india and indonesia face many competitors. short term rebound on oil prices, i think logistics businesses like comfortdelgro would be better beneficiaries in the long term. ps: warren buffet avoids airlines as well. (just saying) my random 2 cents rant, DYODD!

What are the chances it could return to the days of $14~$15? I mean, everyone is talking abt how the low prices would spur economy and the aviation industry, and SQ has had a good record of corporate governance. So, how much would they be able to ride on this macro-economic "wave"? | |||||||

Computer Error Sells 900 Business Class Tickets at Economy PricesWhat a deal! Over the weekend a computer glitch caused around 900  Singapore Airlines  Business Class tickets from Australia to destinations in Europe to be sold at coach prices. The tickets, sold between, Saturday and Monday, were purchased from various online retailers in Australia. The Business Class tickets should have sold for more than $6,000 a piece, but when they were loaded into the global distribution system for tickets they were priced around $3,500. Happy Holidays! But, now the airline is in a bind and demanding that the online agents tell their customers about the mistake and make them pay the difference. That difference, in some cases, can be up to $5,000 according to the  Herald Sun  newspaper. A Singapore Airlines spokeswoman confirmed the mishap to the Herald Sun. Related: Flying Singapore Airlines in First Class for an Hour Ruined My Life &ldquo We have been notified that a small number of travel agents have sold tickets against this reassigned business class subclass, at an economy fare level,&rdquo the spokeswoman said.  &ldquo We are working with our travel agent partners to ensure that our customers are notified of this issue so that steps can be made to ensure there is no disruption to their travel plans.&rdquo |

Surprising not much of a bounce since IATA announced Cargo shipping will improve and airlines will benefit from low prices.  |

It doesn' t matter how long you hedged your exposures. Let me give you an example=> > > Assuming SIA hedge monthly for next year oil consumption ( 1 year is considered long as normally businesses only hedge 3 months to 5 months earlier). So, March 2014 long oil futures for March 2015, April 2014 long oil futures for April 2015, May 2014    long oil futures for May 2015, So on and so forth.     Lets say Oil price fall in April 2014 and started recovering in JAN 2015, Emirate Air who hedged for next 3 months will be able to start lowering its ticket price in July 2014   while SIA could only start lowering its ticket price by April 2015. Despite able to enjoy the benefit of lower oil price 6 months earlier, Emirate Air ultimately still have to raise its share price when oil price started hiking in 2015. On the other hand SIA gets to enjoy the beneift of lower oil price later but at a time when competitors had to raise their oil price. THE ONLY DIFFERENCES IS WHEN YOU ENJOY THE BENEFIT OF LOWER OIL PRICE AND THE AMOUNT LIQUIDITY YOU HAVE TO MAINTAIN FOR LONGING MORE HEDGING CONTRACTS. Beside that, your hedging tenure make no differences. THE PURPOSE OF HEDING IS TO PROTECT YOUR PROFIT AGANIST MARKET MOVEMENT, THAT' S ALL.

SIA must have hedged oil price long ago. They are a very kiasu company and not easy for them to take advantages of the current prices. If they hedge at current prices its effect will be felt after 6 months or a year |

Any more upside?????????? The analysts estimate that for SIA, a US$5 per barrel oil price drop could yield an 11.5 per cent incremental net profit, whereas a US$10 price drop will result in 23 per cent higher net profit. |
