Singapore Stocks Up on Positive Global Cues 9 June 2016 11:51 Singapore' s Straits Times Index is up 0.6%, or 16.17 points, at 2878.55, rising for the sixth consecutive session as global cues favor stock buying. This follows positive cues from Asian markets following overnight gain on Wall Street. In Singapore, offshore and marine companies that support the oil industry continue to gain from firmer oil prices. Ezion (5ME.SG) is up 1.7% to S $ 0.595. Dow posts first close above 18K since April U.S. stocks closed higher Wednesday, with materials and industrial stocks leading, as the Dow and S & P neared their 52-week intraday highs touched last summer. The Dow Jones industrial average closed above the psychologically key 18,000 level for the first time since April 27. UnitedHealth contributed the most to gains. " Perhaps investors are hoping and seeing opportunities for revenue growth and earnings growth," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at BMO Private Bank. " The rationale for substantial gains from here seems kind of tenuous unless we can get a ramp up in revenue," he said. Traders also attributed support to stocks from gains in oil prices and the weaker US dollar. The US dollar index hit its lowest since May 6 and was last about 0.2 percent lower, with the euro near $ 1.14 and the yen around 107 yen against the greenback as of 3:59 pm ET. U.S. crude oil futures settled up 87 cents, or 1.73 percent, at $ 51.23 a barrel, its highest settle since July 15. EIA data showed a draw of 3.2 million barrels in crude and builds in gasoline and distillate inventories. U.S. crude production edged higher, reversing a recent trend of declining output. Singapore shares close higher with oil and shipping stocks in play A FIRMING oil price helped bring offshore and marine stocks into play on Wednesday as the Straits Times Index (STI) chalked up a fifth successive rise in modest volume of 1.7 billion units worth S $ 1.05 billion. A marginally firm session for the Dow futures or most of the day helped keep sentiment positive, the broad market recording 251 rises versus 159 falls, excluding warrants. The STI, however, weakened in the final minutes in tandem with a reversal in the Dow futures . It closed at 2,862.38, a net gain of 14.29 points for the day. The actives list featured the likes of Ezra, Ezion, Loyz Energy, Cosco, Vallianz, Vard and AusGroup -. All companies connected to the shipping and oil industries Among index stocks, gains in the three banks were pivotal in pushing up the STI, bringing its five-day gain to 72 points or 2.6 per cent. In the second line, shares of Noble Group rose for the second day after the battering they suffered when the company announced a rights issue. The counter' s S $ 0.015 rise to S $ 0.265 on volume of 57.6 million made it the day' s fourth most active stock. Also active was AddValue Technologies, though its shares dropped S $ 0.007 or 15.2 per cent to S $ 0.039 on volume of 45.7 million. The company on Tuesday said that a major asset sale to a China firm that was first announced in March 2014 but has met with several delays could finally be concluded within the next four months. Stocks from Wall Street to Asia have firmed after the release of a very weak US jobs report last Friday significantly reduced the odds of an interest rate hike at next week' s US Federal Open Market Committee meeting. ******** Hong Kong' s stock and bond markets will be closed on Thursday for the Dragon Boat Festival holiday.Markets will resume trade on Friday. China stocks fell on Wednesday amid weak volumes as markets prepared for a long weekend holiday though investors are looking ahead to the possible announcement of mainland shares' inclusion in MSCI' s emerging market indexes next week. Oil holds above US $ 50 on weak dollar, supplies data in focus [SINGAPORE] Oil prices held above US $ 50 in Asia on Wednesday thanks to a weak dollar as traders await the release of US inventory data later in the day. Traders are expecting US Department of Energy weekly stockpile numbers to show another drop after recent losses, helping to build on a 90 per cent rebound in the commodity since the start of the year. Oil has surged since hitting near 13-year lows at the start of the year thanks to the drop in the dollar as well as signs of a recovery in the global economy and lower production in Canada and Nigeria. At about 0720 GMT Wednesday, US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for July delivery was up two cents at US $ 50.38 a barrel while Brent North Sea for August delivery was down eight cents at US $ 51.40. |

Asia markets close mixed energy plays get boost as oil holds above $ 50 Asian markets closed mixed on Wednesday, amid a muted reaction to China' s May trade data, but the energy sector got a boost after oil prices settled above $ 50 a barrel on Tuesday for the first time in nearly 11 months. The Nikkei 225 reversed morning losses to close up 155.47 points, or 0.93 percent, at 16,830.92, after the yen weakened against the dollar. The dollar-yen pair traded at 107.06 as of 3:39 pm HK / SIN, compared with an earlier session low of 106.7. In the Tuesday session, the dollar / yen traded at levels near 107.9. Stephen Innes, a senior trader at OANDA Asia Pacific, attributed the dollar / yen' s fall to the prospects of lower-for-longer US interest rates and uncertainty over the Bank of Japan' s next likely move at its policy meeting later this month. In a note Wednesday, he also said that Japan' s policymakers appear to be showing a " lack of urgency," with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe only planning to propose an economic stimulus package in the autumn, after July elections. Chinese mainland markets closed lower, with the Shanghai composite down 9.34 points, or 0.32 percent, at 2,926.69, and the Shenzhen composite was off by 6.25 points, or 0.32 percent, to 1,918.62. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index was down 30.36 points , or 0.14 percent, at 21,297.88. In South Korea, the Kospi advanced 15.45 points, or 0.77 percent, to 2,027.08. Oil prices advanced overnight on expectations of stockpile drawdowns in the U.S. and global supply shortfalls. Reuters said a report from the American Petroleum Institute, released after prices settled, showed a higher-than-expected crude drawdown of 3.6 million barrels.
