Junta warns Myanmar& rsquo s top bankers to stop violating its rules
July 11, 2024
Myanmar& rsquo s banks will be closely supervised from now on because their violations of regulations had affected the economy, Lt-Gen Aung Lin Dwe, the secretary of the State Administration Council (SAC)& mdash the military junta& rsquo s governing body& mdash said at a meeting between junta officials and the country& rsquo s top bankers on Monday. He warned of penalties against those whose actions harmed the country& rsquo s financial stability, assets and resources.
Chairpersons and executives of private banks were summoned to the administrative capital Naypyitaw to discuss & ldquo banking matters& rdquo with Lt-Gen Aung Lin Dwe and SAC Joint Secretary Lt-Gen Ye Win Oo, along with Minister for Home Affairs Lt-Gen Yar Pyae Foreign Exchange Supervisory Committee Chairman Lt-Gen Nyo Saw Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Planning and Finance U Win Shein and the chair of the junta-controlled Central Bank of Myanmar.
U Aung Ko Win of KBZ Bank U Zaw Zaw, chairman of AYA Bank U Zaw Win Shein from A Bank and U Kyaw Win from Shwe Bank attended the meeting, along with representatives of other banks.
The junta recently announced it was taking action against seven private banks for exceeding limits on home loans.
