China Mobile denies it plans to buy stake in Singapore firm M1

China Mobile, the world' s largest telecom carrier by subscribers, on Monday denied media report that it was considering to acquiring a stake in Singapore telecom company M1 Ltd.

The company said in a reply to China Daily that " China Mobile is not involved in the (investment) project."

Reuters reported on Friday that top shareholders in Singapore telecoms company M1 Ltd have approached potential buyers including China Mobile to sell their stake in the firm.

Follow analysis is based on comparing M1 Ltd. with the following peers &ndash StarHub Ltd, Total Access Communication Public Co., Ltd. NVDR, Singapore Telecommunications Limited and Next-Generation Satellite Communications Limited

Company Overview

• From a peer analysis angle, relative underperformance over the last year has improved more recently.

• It&rsquo s current Price/Book of 4.34 is about median in its peer group.

• The market expects M1  to grow at about the same rate as the peers and to maintain the median returns it currently generates.

• M1&lsquo s median net profit margins and relatively high asset efficiency give it some operating leverage.

• Compared with its chosen peers, the company&rsquo s annual revenues and earnings change at a slower rate, implying a lack of strategic focus and/or lack of execution success.

• Over the last five years,  M1&lsquo s return on assets has declined from above median to about median among its peers, indicating declining relative operating performance.

• The company&rsquo s margins are around the peer medians and do not suggest any benefit from a pricing or an operating cost advantage versus peers.

• While M1&lsquo s revenues in recent years have grown faster than the peer median, the market gives the stock a P/E ratio that is around peer median suggesting that the market has some questions about the company&rsquo s long-term strategy.

• The company&rsquo s capital investment seems appropriate for a business with peer median returns.

• M1 has the financial and operating capacity to borrow quickly.
