Asian Stocks Drop While Credit Risk Climbs With Gold

Asian stocks fell, with a regional index headed for its biggest drop in six weeks, and credit risk increased as Chinese services data fueled concern the economy is slowing. Emerging-market currencies weakened, while gold rose.

The MSCI Asia Pacific Excluding Japan Index lost 1.3 percent at 10:30 a.m. in Hong Kong, while the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index tumbled 2.4 percent. Standard & Poor?s 500 Index (SPX) futures rose 0.1 percent after U.S. equity gauges sank from records yesterday. Indonesia?s rupiah declined 0.5 percent versus the dollar, trading near the lowest level since 2008, while the yen strengthened 0.4 percent. The cost of insuring sovereign and corporate bonds in Asia rose to a three-week high and gold climbed 0.5 percent.

China?s non-manufacturing gauge fell to a four-month low in December, after data earlier this week showed two measures of factory output in the world?s second-largest economy declined. Physical demand for gold is rising after the metal tumbled 28 percent in 2013, the most since 1981. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke speaks today and euro region money supply figures are also due.

?You cannot count on China to contribute to global growth now as the economy is still under structural adjustment,? said Dai Ming, a money manager at Hengsheng Hongding Asset Management Co. in Shanghai. ?There?s no excitement in the macroeconomy and in this case it?s difficult for the stock market to have good performance.?

More than five shares fell for each one that rose on the MSCI Asia Pacific Excluding Japan Index. Gauges in China, South Korea and Indonesia all declined at least 1 percent. Australia?s S& P/ASX 200 Index (AS51) dropped 0.7 percent.

China?s purchasing managers? index for the non-manufacturing sector fell to 54.6, the lowest reading since August, from 56 in November. Data Jan. 1 showed the official gauge for factory output dropped more than economists projected, also to a four-month low. An HSBC Holdings Plc and Markit Economics Ltd. index of Chinese manufacturing published yesterday slipped to 50.5 from 50.8 in November, matching the median estimate in a Bloomberg survey.

Overnight Market Commentary

US stocks closed sharply lower on the first trading day of 2014 after data indicating a slowdown in manufacturing expansion in China and the US.

All 10 industries of the S& P 500 closed down. The worst performer was Utilities (-1.53%) and the best performer was Health Care (-0.53%)....

Feb WTI Crude lost US$2.98, or 3.0%, to end at US$95.44/barrel and Feb Brent ceded US$3.02, or 2.7% to end at US$107.78/barrel.

Gold for Feb delivery gained US$22.90, or 1.90%, to end at US$1225.20/ounce and Mar Silver rose 76 cents, or 3.9%, to end at US$20.13/ounce.

Implications for Singapore

The significant retreat on Wall Street overnight could spook the local bourse to a negative opening this morning.

Following the ninth consecutive session of recovery yesterday, the STI is now just shy of its key 5-month downtrend resistance and the 3200 psychological hurdle.

But with today?s tone likely to turn more downside biased, we could see the index pulling back in the direction of the 3130 support, instead of testing these key obstacles.

Beyond that, the next base lies at the 3100 psychological support. On the upside, we now see the subsequent resistance at the 3260 key peaks.

Stocks start 2014 in the red

Stocks got off to a weak start for the year, as investors took a step back amid worries about slowing economic growth in China.

The Dow fell more than 130 points, or nearly 1%. The S& P 500 and Nasdaq also declined about 1%. This is the first time markets started the year on a down note since 2008.

Investors were in a cautious mood after data showed that China's factories lost some momentum in December, adding to fears that the world's second-largest economy may soften in the new year.

Economic data in the United States wasn't all that positive either. Manufacturing activity grew in December, but at a slightly slower pace than the previous month, according to the Institute for Supply Management's index. Initial jobless claims fell for a second straight week but came in slightly higher than expectations.

Trading volume will likely remain light this week as many traders are still away for the holidays.

U.S. stocks finished higher Tuesday -- the final trading day of 2013 -- with the Dow and S& P closing out 2013 with record highs. The Dow ended the year with a 26% gain, while the S& P 500 jumped more than 29% and the Nasdaq surged nearly 40%.

Markets were closed around the world Wednesday for the New Year's holiday.

European markets closed the first day of the year lower, with France's CAC 40 index and Germany's DAX declining by 1.6%.

Most Asian markets ended the day with small gains. The Shanghai Composite index moved up nearly 1%. The Tokyo Stock Exchange was closed for an extended New Year break.
