June 15, 2015 South Korea: More on the June 15 MERS cases Via Yonhap News: S. Korea reports three more MERS deaths, 4 new cases. Excerpt: South Korea reported three more deaths from Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) Tuesday, bringing the death toll to 19. The country also reported four new cases of the viral respiratory illness that put the total number of people diagnosed with the disease at 154. One of the deceased was a 49-year-old patient who became the youngest person here to die from the viral respiratory illness, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Medical experts had maintained the disease was mostly critical to the elderly and those with existing health problems. However, the latest fatalities included two people who had no known medical conditions prior to their diagnosis. So far, four out of the 19 who died from MERS had no medical issues before they were infected with MERS. Three of the four new patients were infected while visiting Seoul' s Samsung Medical Center, which has been a major source of infections, according to the health ministry. The hospital, run by the country' s largest conglomerate Samsung Group, has voluntarily shut down most of its operations until June 24, at the earliest. At least three other hospitals, including Seoul' s Boramae Medical Center and the Korea Cancer Center Hospital, have temporarily shut down their emergency rooms, which is where most transmissions occurred after they had unknowingly treated MERS patients or carriers. Out of 154 people diagnosed with the disease so far, 17 have been discharged following complete recoveries as of Tuesday, the ministry said. |

Outbreak in Korea follows new patterns Infectiousness can be explained, low fatality rate is still a mystery June 11,2015     The outbreak of Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) in Korea is a lot different from in the Middle East - and the reasons why have yet to be determined. When the first patient was reported on May 20, it was known from the Middle East that the disease is not very infectious but has a high fatality rate. But in Korea, the situation has been completely the opposite. As of Wednesday, a total of 108 people had contracted the disease and nine died. The fatality rate stayed at 8.3 percent as of Wednesday, much lower than the 40.6 percent worldwide cited as of Friday by the European Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). The Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) depended on data from foreign cases, which indicated that a MERS patient usually infects 0.6 to 0.8 people. But Korea&rsquo s Patient No. 1, who was diagnosed on May 20 after contracting the disease on a business trip to the Middle East, transmitted the disease to 37 people. Patient No. 14, who was infected with MERS while staying in the same ward as Patient No. 1, spread it to 47 people. &ldquo [MERS in Korea] seems more infectious because it has spread among hospitalized patients with weakened immune systems,&rdquo said Oh Myoung-don, a professor of infectious diseases at Seoul National University Hospital. In Korea&rsquo s outbreak, even people exposed briefly to MERS patients have caught the disease. Patient No. 92, a 27-year-old security guard at Asan Medical Cener in Seoul, was infected by Patient No. 6 after they interacted for just 10 minutes in the emergency room. A man in his 40s contracted the disease after he visited a patient at Pyeongtaek St. Mary&rsquo s Hospital for only 30 minutes. According to the Korean Society of Infectious Diseases, which looked at 58 confirmed MERS patients, major symptoms for those patients were fever (89.6 percent), cough (34.4 percent), chest congestion (24.4 percent), muscle aches (24.4 percent) and difficulty breathing (18.9 percent). One was totally asymptomatic. The society said about half of the patients saw their body temperatures return to the normal range on the seventh day after exhibiting symptoms. The society&rsquo s data showed that 63.8 percent had underlying conditions, such as chronic lung diseases, and 45 of 58 patients had chronic diseases such as high blood pressure (17 percent), diabetes (14 percent), cancer (12 percent), liver conditions (8.6 percent) and heart conditions (8.6 percent), which isn&rsquo t surprising considering hospitals were the main infection site. In cases reported in foreign countries, the MERS coronavirus is known to attack the lungs and kidneys at the same time, but only 4 percent of the patients studied in Korea had kidney involvement. &ldquo It is clearly different from Saudi Arabia, where half of MERS patients had chronic renal failure,&rdquo said Kim Woo-joo, the society&rsquo s chairman, &ldquo and it will decrease the fatality rate of MERS in Korea.&rdquo And yet a comparison of the RNA of the virus in Korea and in the Middle East showed they were over 99 percent similar, signifying no mutation. The higher infection rate is also being blamed on crowded hospital rooms in Korea. Out of 95 patients as of Tuesday, 55 people (or 55.8 percent) first visited hospitals for treatment for other complaints, and at least 10 contracted the disease while staying in the same hospital room with MERS patients. According to research by the Korea Health Industry Development Institute in 2012 on 152 local clinics and smaller hospitals, the most common type of hospital room was a six-patient room, followed by five-patient rooms, seven- to 10-patient rooms and four-patient rooms.

South Korea' s health ministry on Thursday reported 14 new cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), taking the total to 122 in an outbreak that is the largest outside Saudi Arabia.  Among the newly reported cases was a pregnant woman who contracted the virus at the emergency ward of a Seoul hospital that has been linked to a number of other confirmed cases, the ministry said.  The spread of the disease has stirred up public fear and confusion, prompting President Park Geun-hye to postpone a visit to the United States, while health officials have been criticized over a lack of transparency and for failing to swiftly contain the spread.  A joint South Korean-World Health Organization mission on Wednesday recommended that schools be reopened as they were unlikely to spread the disease, just as school boards recommended more be shut.  Eight of the 14 new cases, including the pregnant woman, have been linked to the same Seoul hospital, the health ministry said.  The woman' s parents had also previously tested positive to MERS, the ministry said. The woman was reported to be in stable condition.

SEJONG, June 10 (Yonhap) -- South Korea on Wednesday confirmed two more deaths from Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and reported 13 new cases, bringing the number of infections to 108. The latest fatalities marked the eighth and ninth MERS-related deaths in the country since the outbreak was first confirmed on May 20. The 13 new cases were confirmed among people who have been in isolation. According to the Health and Welfare Ministry, 10 out of the 13 new MERS patients were infected while visiting Seoul' s Samsung Medical Center, one of the largest and most renowned hospitals in the capital whose fame had apparently attracted a MERS patient seeking treatment. As of Tuesday morning, 2,892 people were in isolation for possible infection after coming in close contact with a MERS patient. The health ministry has said all transmissions so far have occurred at hospitals, most of which had unknowingly treated MERS patients, also unaware of their infection. The government has released the names of all hospitals affected by MERS, which stood at 29 on Monday. MERS is a viral respiratory illness that was first reported in Saudi Arabia in 2012. The disease had a very high fatality rate of over 40 percent before the outbreak in South Korea, according to the health ministry. The latest MERS-related deaths here put the fatality rate of the disease in South Korea at around 8 percent.   |

South Korea confirmed another death from Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and reported eight new cases Tuesday, raising the number of infections to 95. I think it should not go much lower than 0.064. Should be safe to accumulate at  this level or from 0.062 onwards. http://crofsblogs.typepad.com/h5n1/2015/06/south-korea-more-on-todays-new-mers-cases-and-death.html June 08, 2015 " South Korea: More on today' s new MERS cases and death Via Yonhap News: S. Korea reports seventh MERS death, 8 new cases. Excerpt: South Korea confirmed another death from Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and reported eight new cases Tuesday, raising the number of infections to 95. The latest fatality, the seventh since the country first reported the outbreak on May 20, was a 68-year-old female who had already been suffering from chronic heart conditions, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare. She was hospitalized at Seoul' s Samsung Medical Center on May 27-28, during which she came in close contact with a MERS patient. So far, all infection cases have occurred at hospitals where at least one MERS patient had visited or stayed for treatment -- the reason the government believes the disease can still be contained. To help prevent the disease from spreading further, the government has released the names of all hospitals affected by the disease, which stood at 29 as of late Monday. MERS is a viral respiratory illness that was first reported in Saudi Arabia in 2012. The disease had a very high fatality rate of over 40 percent before the outbreak in South Korea, according to the health ministry. Currently, the disease has a fatality rate of around 8 percent here. Still, health officials here are struggling to find out the reasons for what they have called the unusually fast and wide spreading of the disease, which had only some 1,100 confirmed cases throughout the world before the outbreak here. With 95 confirmed cases, South Korea now has the second-largest number of people diagnosed with the disease after Saudi Arabia, which has reported over 1,000 cases since it reported the world' s first case in 2012" .   |

MERS symtoms are much quicker than SARS to appear, so less chance of carrying it around, and it is spread less easily. More self-limiting. Been in Middle East area already since 2012 already and has spread to other countries before but easily contained by quarantine. check out the CDC website. |
