June 28, 2015 UAE: Expatriate woman and child infected with MERS Via The National: UAE expat woman and child infected with Mers. Excerpt: A child aged 11 and a woman have contracted Mers from a relative who had the virus diagnosed last month. The two expatriates, who live in the Eastern Region of Abu Dhabi, were found to have been infected later in June. The World Health Organisation reported that the woman, 46, was suffering from other disorders. The WHO said they were relatives of one of two patients who were diagnosed with Mers in May, although it did not say which one. One of those, a 65-year-old expatriate, died after developing symptoms on May 31 and being admitted to hospital on June 6. The two new patients had Mers diagnosed after screening of those who had come in contact with their relative. Neither of them had been exposed to other risk factors in the 14 days before detection, the WHO said. They are now being kept in isolation, where they have not shown any symptoms.

June 24, 2015 With more MERS cases, South Korea says outbreak at crossroads Via Reuters: With more MERS cases, South Korea says outbreak at crossroads. South Korea' s health ministry, which reported four new cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) on Wednesday, said the outbreak was at a crossroads, backing off from its earlier view that the spread of the often-deadly virus had leveled off. The more guarded assessment came as the government extended the partial shutdown of Samsung Medical Center in Seoul, which had been due to end on Wednesday. About half the 179 infections in the country have been traced to the prestigious hospital, including some of this week' s new cases. " We are at a crossroads, whether this is going to spread further or not," Kwon Deok-cheol, the health ministry' s chief policy official, told a news briefing. " As of now we can' t answer that part because additional cases have occurred, although we thought until last weekend it had leveled off," he said when asked if there was any change in its earlier view that the outbreak had settled. The country reported no new MERS case on June 20 but since then 13 fresh cases have been confirmed. During the peak of the outbreak early this month, new infections exceeded 20 on some days. |

June 23, 2015 South Korea reports four new MERS cases total now 179 Via GMA News: South Korea reports four new MERS cases. Excerpt: South Korea reported four new cases of MERS on Wednesday, its third consecutive day without any fatalities, as the total number of infections rose to 179.    The four new cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome included two who were in the same hospital ward as other MERS patients, the health ministry said.    Two others were a nurse at Samsung Medical Centre in Seoul -- one of the epicenters of the outbreak -- and a relative of a patient who was hospitalized for an unspecified disease in a hospital in Pyeongtaek, south of Seoul, in early June.    Authorities were still investigating how exactly the latter two had contracted the virus, the ministry said.    The total number of people who had died in the outbreak remained unchanged at 27, it said, adding that about 3,100 people were still under quarantine at state facilities or at home.    Sixteen patients were in critical condition, it said, while a total of 67 people had recovered and were released from hospital, including 13 from Monday to Tuesday.   |

June 22, 2015 South Korea reports three new MERS cases with no additional deaths South Korea is now up to 175 confirmed MERS cases. Via Yonhap News: S. Korea reports 3 new MERS cases with no additional deaths. Excerpt: South Korea reported three new cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) Tuesday but no additional deaths from the potentially fatal disease. With the latest cases, the total number of people diagnosed with the disease here came to 175, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare. The country' s death toll remained at 27. Two of the three new patients came from those who have already been in isolation as suspected cases, while the source of infection for the third patient was still unclear, according to ministry officials. They said the person may have been infected through an ambulance driver or a paramedic who had been exposed to MERS patients. As of Tuesday, the number of people in isolation for possible infection came to 2,805, down from 3,833 on the previous day, according to the ministry. Since the country reported its first MERS case on May 20, over 13,000 people have been subject to quarantine with 10,718 released from isolation after showing no symptoms of the disease for more than the known maximum incubation period of 14 days. Those subject to isolation are currently banned from leaving the country. |

June 18, 2015Thailand confirms first MERS case: Health ministryWell, that was quick. Via Yahoo News, Reuters reports:  Thailand confirms first MERS case: health ministry. Excerpt: Thailand confirmed its first case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) on Thursday, becoming the fourth Asian country to register the deadly virus this year.  Public Health Minister Rajata Rajatanavin told a news conference that a 75-year-old businessman from Oman had tested positive for MERS.  " From two lab tests we can confirm that the MERS virus was found," Rajata said, adding the man had traveled to Bangkok for medical treatment for a heart condition.  " The first day he came he was checked for the virus. The patient ... contracted the MERS virus." The health minister said 59 others were being monitored for the virus, including three of the man' s relatives who traveled with him to Bangkok. The Ministry of Health' s English-language website has nothing about this, and doesn' t appear to be updated often. June 18, 2015 at 05:27 AM in Medical testing, MERS, Travel & health | Permalink |

S. Korea reports 3 more deaths from MERS, 3 new cases 2015/06/18 09:00 SEJONG, June 18 (Yonhap) -- South Korea reported three more deaths from Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) Thursday, bringing the death toll to 23. The latest deaths put the fatality rate of the disease in the country at nearly 14 percent, the highest since the country first confirmed its outbreak on May 20, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare. The country also confirmed three new cases of the viral respiratory disease that brought the total number of people diagnosed with the disease to 165. The three new cases included two nurses at two local hospitals who helped treat MERS patients. So far, nearly all transmissions occurred at hospitals, a reason the government continues to claim there is no reason to fear the disease too much. In a statement released Wednesday, the World Health Organization, also noted there has been no community transmission of the disease in South Korea. The South Korean government belatedly began releasing the names of hospitals affected by MERS, which reached 84 as of Tuesday. Along with those diagnosed, 6,729 other people are currently in isolation for possible infection after coming in close contact with MERS patients, according to the health ministry. Since the first case, 24 people diagnosed with the disease have been discharged from hospitals following complete recoveries, it added. Out of the 118 still in treatment, 17 were in unstable condition as of Thursday, the ministry said.
