http://www.straitstimes.com/asia/se-asia/haze-blankets-parts-of-sumatra " Forest fires worsen ahead of expansion of cloud-seeding operations Zubaidah Nazeer Indonesia Bureau Chief In Jakarta Forest fires in Sumatra have intensified, with a thick haze enveloping parts of the island, prompting local officials to distribute masks. " The acrid smell is getting bitter this evening. We feel like the haze is coming stronger on us. It is worse now than hours ago," Pekanbaru resident Didik Herwanto told The Straits Times yesterday evening. Visibility at the Pekanbaru airport in Riau province yesterday morning was as low as 600m, resulting in one flight being diverted to Batam. Said Mr Sugarin, head of the meteorological office at the Pekanbaru airport: A flight was diverted to Batam this morning as we had fog and haze. Visibility at 7am was 600m, but it gradually recovered to 1,500m at 8am, and to 9km at around noon." The situation seems to have worsened, ahead of a government effort to expand cloud-seeding operations to southern parts of Sumatra today. Cloud-seeding over central parts of Sumatra have been ongoing for over two weeks. The Pollutant Standards Index in Riau province reached as high as 111 in some parts yesterday. The forest fires come as Indonesia enters its dry season, with concerns that an El Nino phenomenon could worsen this. Rainfall is expected to be minimal in provinces like Riau. Meteorologists say the wind direction determines whether the haze will be blown to Singapore. In this case, winds are blowing from south to north, causing Singapore' s PSI reading to climb into the moderate range. While Mr Sugarin notes that the situation in Riau is improving, he blames neighbouring provinces for the haze, saying most of it was due to fires burning in southern provinces like Jambi and South Sumatra. However, South Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin refuted this. " There is a lot of the blame game going on, but we prefer to tackle the problem and talk less," he said, adding that he would officiate the beginning of cloud-seeding over his province today. Hot spots in South Sumatra dipped to 27 from 34 a day earlier, though he admits this is no guarantee there will be no fires or haze" .

July 06, 2015 Canada: Metro Vancouver air quality comparable to Beijing Via CBC News: Metro Vancouver air quality comparable to Beijing. The report and then a comment: Health authorities say Metro Vancouver' s air quality has dipped to levels close to those found in major Chinese polluted cities, such as Beijing, and are warning residents to stay indoors. The sharp decrease in air quality is mostly due to small particles from the fires that can irritate people' s lungs. The highest concentration of particulate matter in the air has been found in North Burnaby, where levels are not far behind those found in Beijing.   " I would say that the air quality that we' ve experienced recently and are experiencing now is unfortunately something that residents in a lot of cities in China experience on quite a regular basis," said Fraser Health Medical Health Officer Dr. Lisa Mu. " Which I think is quite concerning because these are certainly levels that pose a risk for human health and wellbeing."   Particulate matter numbers Beijing: 144 µ g/m3 Burnaby north: 112 µ g/m3 Vancouver: 60.1 µ g/m3 Abbotsford: 58 µ g/m3 Paris: 56 µ g/m3 Note: These figures are accurate for 7 p.m. PT on Monday. Source: Air Quality B.C. Air quality advisories issued across the region The province has issued air quality warnings for Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, Howe Sound and the Sunshine Coast. " We' ve seen some short-term concentrations of particulates that are around as much as four times the normal levels," said Roger Quan, the director of air quality policy and climate change for Metro Vancouver. " It' s going to take a change in the weather and an improvement in the fires themselves to clean out the air that we' re seeing here in Metro Vancouver," said Quan.   |

July 05, 2015 Philippines confirms second MERS case Via the Daily Mail Online, a Reuters report: Philippines confirms second MERS case. The Philippines confirmed a second case of the deadly Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) corona virus on Monday in a 36-year-old foreigner who showed symptoms of the disease after arriving in Manila on June 19 from Dubai. The man was admitted to a government hospital on July 4 and was under observation, Health Ministry spokesman Lyndon Lee-suy said, adding contact tracing was now under way to prevent the spread of the disease. The man had also travelled to Saudi Arabia, the spokesman said. His condition was improving and there was no known transmission to the community. The first case discovered in the Philippines was in January, a Filipino nurse working in Saudi Arabia who survived the disease.   |

July 03, 2015 South Korea: Another doctor at Samsung' s hospital contracts MERS total now 185 Via Yonhap News, a July 4 report: Another doctor at Samsung' s hospital contracts MERS: gov' t. Excerpt: Another doctor at Samsung Group' s hospital is confirmed to have contracted Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), the government said Saturday, putting the total number of those diagnosed with the disease at 185. A doctor from Samsung Medical Center, whose identity is being withheld, has been added to the patients list and is under examination, the Ministry of Health and Welfare said. No fatalities have been reported over the past four days. The country' s death toll from the viral disease stands at 33. The hospital owned by the country' s top conglomerate has been blamed for nearly half of all infections here since MERS first broke out on May 20. The medical center is currently shut down indefinitely. The latest contraction follows a diagnosis of a nurse at the same hospital confirmed a day earlier, stoking concerns that the disease at the facility appears far from containment. A total of 13 medical staff members from the hospital have caught the virus. Out of the 185 people diagnosed with MERS, 41 remain hospitalized while 11 of them are in critical condition, according to ministry officials. So far, 111 have been discharged following complete recoveries. The number of those who remain in isolation sharply dropped overnight to 1,434 as of early Saturday from 2,067. They have been separated for possible infection after coming in close contact with MERS patients.   |

July 02, 2015 South Korea: Another Samsung nurse tests positive for MERS, total now 184 Via The Daily Star in Lebanon, an AFP report: S. Korea reports 2 new MERS cases after 4 day hiatus. SEOUL: South Korea Thursday reported two new cases of the potentially deadly Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) virus, after four days in which no cases were spotted. It brought to 184 the total number of people diagnosed with MERS in the largest outbreak outside Saudi Arabia. The latest cases involved two nurses from Seoul' s Samsung Medical Center, the health ministry said. The hospital, which has so far accounted for almost half of all confirmed cases, declared a 10-day suspension of most health services last month to stem the spread of the virus. As the hospital continued to report new cases, the shutdown was extended indefinitely. Of the 184 confirmed cases, 33 have died, 102 have been cured and released from hospital and 48 are still being treated, with 12 of them listed as being in critical condition.

July 01, 2015 South Korea reports additional case of MERS, bringing total to 183 Well, the break was nice while it lasted, but Yonhap News now tells us: S. Korea reports additional case of MERS, bringing total to 183. South Korea reported an additional case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) Thursday, bringing the total number of people diagnosed with the disease here to 183. The latest case marked the first of its kind in five days. The new patient was a female nurse from Seoul' s Samsung Medical Center, which has been responsible for 88 of all infection cases here so far, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare. The hospital, run by the country' s largest conglomerate Samsung Group, had voluntarily shut down most of its operations until June 24. The health ministry later extended the shutdown indefinitely as the hospital continued to report new infection cases. Some 90 hospitals throughout the country have been affected by MERS since the country reported its outbreak on May 20. A list of the MERS-affected hospitals is daily updated and available on the ministry' s website.

Ebola is not spread through the air, by water, or in general, by food......... and Medtec more like to produce medical consumables for the global healthcare industry.....not so much on PPE...... just my take, lyn

June 30, 2015 Ebola in Liberia: More on the new case Via Ebola Deeply ,a June 30 report: Setback for Liberia as Corpse Tests Positive for Ebola. Health officials on Tuesday confirmed that the dead body of a 17-year-old student from Nedowein, close to Liberia' s international airport, has tested positive for Ebola. The news breaks Liberia' s good record of zero Ebola cases since early March the country was declared Ebola-free on May 9, exactly 42 days after the last case. " We don' t yet know the source of infection," Tolbert Nyenswah, who heads Liberia' s Ebola response, told Ebola Deeply. " We are investigating whether the boy had traveled, and we are listing contacts. The boy died at the home of his father, and we are providing the household and community with the support that' s needed. It is possible that we will find additional cases, but at this point it is only one case." About 30 contacts are believed to be under surveillance so far, and the nearest Ebola treatment center, in Margibi County, has been reopened. The boy' s parents are believed to be separated, so at least two homes have been quarantined. An Ebola Deeply reporter who visited Nedowein on Tuesday afternoon, where the 17-year-old boy died, said the village had not yet been fully cordoned off. Nedowein - far from the borders with Guinea and Sierra Leone - skirts the community of Smell-No-Taste, so called because it once housed a U.S. military community known for cooking pungent dishes. Liberia' s health minister Bernice Dahn said that officials were alerted when relatives called the Ebola hotline soon after the boy' s death. A swab was taken from the boy' s body on June 28, and a safe burial was conducted on the same day.     |

Terry Branstad today announced that he is extending the State of Disaster Emergency in response to the avian flu outbreak through July 31, 2015. This is the second extension the governor has made to the original disaster proclamation. The governor&rsquo s original disaster declaration was set to expire Sunday, May 31, 2015, but he extended it until July 1, 2015, on May 29, 2015. The latest disaster proclamation can be read here.    The extension comes less than two weeks after Branstad requested a Presidential Disaster Designation for four Iowa counties hit by the virus. In bipartisan fashion, members of Iowa&rsquo s Congressional Delegation wrote a letter to President Obama encouraging him to grant the governor&rsquo s request on June 19, 2015.   |
