July 15, 2015 UK: Nearly 9,500 people die each year in London because of air pollution Via The Guardian: Nearly 9,500 people die each year in London because of air pollution &ndash study. Excerpt: Nearly 9,500 people die early each year in London due to long-term exposure to air pollution, more than twice as many as previously thought, according to new research. The premature deaths are due to two key pollutants, fine particulates known as PM2.5s and the toxic gas nitrogen dioxide (NO2), according to a study carried out by researchers at King&rsquo s College London. The study &ndash which was commissioned by the Greater London Authority and Transport for London &ndash is believed to be the first by any city in the world to attempt to quantify how many people are being harmed by NO2. The gas is largely created by diesel cars, lorries and buses, and affects lung capacity and growth. London, Birmingham, and Leeds are among the UK cities that have been in breach of EU safety limits on NO2 for five years, prompting legal action that led to a supreme court ruling in April that the government must publish a clean-up plan by the end of the year. Previous research attributed 4,267 annual premature deaths to PM2.5s in 2008, based on 2006 levels of the particulates. Subsequent falls in those particulates and a change in methodology that excludes natural sources of the pollutant sees that figure fall to 3,537 for 2010 levels of PM2.5s in the new study. However that fall is more than cancelled out by the addition of an estimated 5,879 deaths from NO2 each year, bringing the total early deaths from both pollutants in 2010 to 9,416. Matthew Pencharz, the deputy mayor for environment and energy, said that local authorities could only do so much and the government needed to step in. &ldquo It&rsquo s [the new research] an important message for government, where the supreme court judgment has already focused minds.&rdquo Although the report found that a larger proportion of deaths caused by PM2.5 were from particulates that originated outside the city than within it, it found that most of the deaths linked to NO2 were because of NO2 emissions from diesel vehicles and other sources within the capital   |

http://crofsblogs.typepad.com/h5n1/2015/07/us-euthanizing-48-million-birds-for-h5n2.html US: Euthanizing 48 million birds for H5N2 Via The Guardian: Bird flu epidemic proves factory-farmed chickens have come home to roost. Excerpt: The avian flu outbreak that has more than doubled egg prices across the country has also led to the death of more than 48 million birds in a dozen states, according to the US Department of Agriculture. Iowa, the hardest hit, has euthanized more than 31 million birds, including approximately 40% of the state&rsquo s 60 million laying hens, according to Randy Olson, executive director of the Iowa Poultry Association. Turkey farmers in the state, while affected to a lesser degree, also have suffered. Minnesota, the leading turkey producer, has lost nearly 9 million turkeys. The massive challenge of disposing of these sick birds illustrates the scale of chicken farming in the US. When avian flu infects a single bird on a chicken farm, the whole population has to be destroyed in order to stop the spread. In Iowa, for example, where an egg farm holds anywhere from 70,000 to 5 million birds, infection means slaughtering an unimaginable number of animals. &ldquo It&rsquo s reasonable when we see these outbreaks to wonder if they are a manifestation of the unsustainability of the system,&rdquo says Suzanne McMillan, senior director of the farm and animal welfare campaign at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). &ldquo Bird flu is a window into how today&rsquo s poultry flocks live day to day, in intensive confinement and unsanitary conditions. It&rsquo s an unnatural, unsustainable situation.&rdquo

July 13, 2015 CIDRAP: Diverse avian flu strains hit UK, Taiwan, South Africa Via CIDRAP, Robert Roos describes an increasingly complicated global picture: Diverse avian flu strains hit UK, Taiwan, South Africa. Excerpt: Several varieties of avian influenza viruses have recently struck farms in the United Kingdom, Taiwan, and South Africa, affecting poultry species ranging from chickens to ostriches, according to reports today. In addition, Minnesota officials said recently that a chickadee tested positive for an avian flu virus, but they couldn' t determine if it was the highly pathogenic H5N2 virus that hit 108 turkey and chicken farms in the state this past spring.

July 09, 2015 Philippines: Finnish MERS case unconfirmed Via Yle Uutiset: THL: Finnish MERS case unconfirmed. Excerpt: The World Health Organization is reporting that a Finnish man in the Philippines has contracted MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome). Meanwhile, the Finnish National Institute for Health and Welfare says the case is unconfirmed as all test results are not yet available. On July 8 the World Health Organization (WHO), announced that a 36-year-old male from Finland in the Philippines is among those who have contracted MERS. However, according to THL, the Finnish National Institute for Health and Welfare, the case is unconfirmed. &rdquo Several samples have been taken from the patient, but only one has indicated a positive result -- the rest have been negative,&rdquo says Jussi Sane, Senior Researcher at THL. According to Sane, the WHO had sent the test samples to Hong Kong for further analysis and the results are not yet available. Sane says that according to the WHO&rsquo s criteria, the Finnish man&rsquo s case should not yet be treated as a confirmed case of MERS. &rdquo However, they (WHO) have already made the information public. Our interpretation is that this case is still unconfirmed,&rdquo says Sane. According to the THL&rsquo s sources, the 36-year-old man is in stable condition, but still in quarantine in the Philippines until the results of all the tests come in.   |
