July 23, 2015 H5N6: ' A threat to global public health' Via Emerging Infectious Diseases: Ahead of Print -Genetic Characterization of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A(H5N6) Virus, Guangdong, China. The authors include major researchers like Malik Peiris and Zhong Nanshan. The conclusion: There is still limited information on human disease caused by the emerging H5 lineage. Our genetic analysis suggests that the H5N6 virus isolated from the patient is originated from the avian host. Although the genetic background of H5N6 virus isolated from the third case in Yunnan Province, China, on January 2015 is still not known, the isolates from the human cases of H5N6 infection reported to date show distant genetic diversity, indicating that viruses from both clusters may pose a threat to humans. This rapidly evolving and globally spreading virus lineage thus provides a threat to global public health.

July 21, 2015 " Air pollution in Beijing and North Vancouver For the first time in ages, I just checked Beijing Air Pollution: Real-time PM2.5 Air Quality Index (AQI). As of 10:00 a.m. Wednesday Beijing time, it' s 155 (unhealthy). It has been far higher. The site also saw that I' m in North Vancouver, BC, and politely asked me if I' d like to check how I was personally doing. Sure. The answer, on a warm Tuesday evening: 21 (good). This after weeks of hot, dry weather, on a day when 250 wildfires are burning across the province.   We don' t know how well off we are. At least for the time being" .

July 20, 2015 South Africa: Two cases of H5N2 low-path bird flu confirmed in Western Cape Via The New Age Online: Two cases of bird flu confirmed in Western Cape. Excerpt: Two cases of bird flu have been confirmed among ostriches in the Hessequa and Kannaland regions in the Southern Cape and Little Karoo.        The cases were discovered during routine tests which also confirmed the virus in the Eastern Cape.    Authorities say the recent outbreak does not pose a threat to the export of ostrich meat to other countries. The low-pathogenic virus was discovered in Hessequa and Kannaland in May.    In the same month, authorities picked up on the high-pathogenic virus near Jansenville and Graff-Reinet in the Eastern Cape. Western Cape Minister of Economic Opportunities, Alan Winde, says there is no need to panic.    &ldquo There is no call for alarm. We are waiting for the final inspection of the European Union who are coming through and it is all part of that process. We do note however that in the Eastern Cape there were two cases where the high pathogenic was located and obviously we will keep a close eye on it, but thus far there is no calls for concern in the Western Cape at all.&rdquo         Even though no deaths were recorded yet, farms have been placed under quarantine The outbreak of H5 N2 avian flu strain has affected at least 240 out of a 1000 ostriches in the Western Cape. Even though no deaths were recorded yet, farms have been placed under quarantine. Farmer Kallie Oosthuizen says he is confident that the next round of tests will be negative.

July 20, 2015 H5N1 spreading across West Africa, human spillover feared: UN Via Reuters: Bird flu spreading across West Africa, human spillover feared: UN. A highly contagious strain of avian flu is spreading across West Africa, decimating poultry farms and stoking fears the virus will jump from birds to humans, the U.N.' s food agency warned on Monday. Markets and farms in Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Niger, Ivory Coast and Ghana have been hit with the deadly H5N1 virus over the past six months, the U.N.' s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said. If the virus continues to spread, it could affect more than 330 million people across West Africa, hurting food security and human health in a region still recovering from the Ebola crisis. " Urgent action is needed to strengthen veterinary investigation and reporting systems... to tackle the disease at the root, before there is a spillover to humans," Juan Lubroth, head of the FAO' s animal health division, said in a statement. In Nigeria alone, 1.6 million birds have been killed by the virus or culled to stop its spread since last year, the FAO said, damaging the economy and robbing citizens of a relatively cheap source of protein. H5N1 bird flu first infected humans in 1997 in Hong Kong. It has since spread from Asia to Europe and Africa and has become entrenched in poultry in some countries, causing millions of poultry infections and several hundred human deaths. |

Excerpt: Managing Director, Grand Cereals Limited, Mr Layi Oyatoki, has said that 1.5 million birds, belonging to 438 farmers, were killed during the outbreak of bird flu early this year. He said that the information from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources indicated that the outbreak was recorded in 18 states with an average of 3,200 birds per farm. Oyatoki, who spoke with newsmen in Jos, said that the infected birds were killed (farms depopulated) to avoid the spread of the disease. He stated that many farmers were put out of business as their means of livelihood was destroyed as a result of the outbreak. |
