August 17, 2015 CIDRAP: Thirteen new MERS cases confirmed in Riyadh outbreak Via CIDRAP, Lisa Schnirring is on today' s big story: Thirteen new MERS cases confirmed in Riyadh outbreak. Excerpt and then a comment: Saudi Arabia reported 14 new MERS-CoV illnesses, along with 4 more deaths, over the past 3 days, with all but 1 of the infections linked to an ongoing hospital-related outbreak in Riyadh. Today alone 9 new MERS-CoV (Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus) cases were reported in the country' s capital, vaulting the nation' s overall total from the disease above the 1,100 mark, to 1,105. The only case confirmed over the past few days outside of Riyadh involves a 64-year-old foreign man in the southern city of Najran who works in a health setting, Saudi Arabia' s Ministry of Health (MOH) said when it announced four cases yesterday. He is listed in stable condition. The investigation into his case so far has found no history of contact with a suspected or confirmed MERS case. The 14 new cases in Riyadh, many of them with hospital-related links, bring the number of Saudi MERS illnesses since Aug 1 to 46.

August 10, 2015 CIDRAP: Riyadh MERS outbreak grows by ten cases Via CIDRAP, Lisa Schnirring writes: Riyadh MERS outbreak grows by 10 cases. Excerpt: Saudi Arabia' s health ministry (MOH) has reported 10 new MERS-CoV cases, as well as 1 death, over the past 3 days, part of an ongoing surge of cases in Riyadh, much of which has come from healthcare- and community-based clusters. Four of the new case-patients had contact with a suspected or confirmed case-patient, and the investigation is still under way for a fifth case, according to three separate MOH statements. The source of the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) isn' t yet known for half of the new cases. One health worker among latest cases All but one of the patients is an adult aged 50 or older. Five are female and five are male. Only one is a healthcare worker, a 55-year-old woman who is the only newly infected individual who isn' t a Saudi citizen. Symptoms were reported for all 10 of the patients. Seven of them are in stable condition, one in home isolation. Three are hospitalized in critical condition. The death occurred in an earlier announced patient, a 72-year-old man from Riyadh who had underlying medical conditions. One earlier case-patient has recovered from his infection, a 44-year-old Saudi man from Alkharj. The MOH said today that 17 people are still being treated for their infections, 3 of them in home isolation. The 10 new cases and the death boost Saudi Arabia' s totals for MERS-CoV to 1,078 cases, 472 of them fatal. Riyadh hot spot details Sporadic cases were reported from Riyadh in June and into July, and the pace of infections picked up toward the end of July. Since Aug 1 the country has reported 20 cases from the city. The steady stream is occurring on the heels of similar hospital and community clusters in Hofuf, a city located about 208 miles east of Riyadh. Last week, reports surfaced in the Saudi Arabian media and the MOH of a family cluster from Riyadh involving six cases, one of them fatal. Health officials haven' t said what' s driving the continued outbreak activity, which is occurring outside of the spikes more typically seen in the spring in the Middle East. The virus seems to spread periodically from camels to people, but so far it doesn' t appear to spread easily in the community setting, except when people have prolonged, unprotected contact with an infected person, such as in families or in healthcare facilities.

August 05, 2015 Indonesia: Authorities on alert after H5N1 bird flu outbreak Via The Jakarta Post: Authorities on alert after bird flu outbreak. Excerpt and then a comment: The Deli Serdang regional administration in North Sumatra has sounded an avian flu alert among local farmers and residents after the highly pathogenic virus started killing tens of thousands of domestic birds in the regency over the past several days. The Deli Serdang Agriculture Agency on Wednesday reported that 57,000 quails at several farms in Karang Anyar subdistrict and scores of chickens and ducks in the Pasar VI Kualanamu and Beringin subdistricts had suddenly died over the past week.   &ldquo We concluded that the cause of the death is bird flu after learning the results of the laboratory test on the samples of the dead poultry,&rdquo agency head Syamsul Bahri told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday. To curb the spread of bird flu, Syamsul said the agency had sprayed disinfectants and helped local farmers clean their poultry cages. &ldquo The losses [from the incidents] can reach up to hundreds of millions of rupiah,&rdquo he said. Influenza viruses that infect birds are called avian influenza, or bird flu, viruses. Avian influenza usually does not make wild birds sick, but can make domesticated birds very sick and kill them. Avian influenza viruses do not usually infect humans. However, several instances of human infections and outbreaks have been reported since 1997. Symptoms of avian influenza in humans have ranged from typical influenza-like symptoms, like fever, cough and sore throat, to eye infections, pneumonia and acute respiratory distress. In response to the reported bird flu outbreak in poultry, the Deli Serdang Health Agency has also set up posts to provide medical assistance and advice to residents in affected areas. Agency secretary Ade Budi Krista said if a person suddenly experienced a high fever after making contact with a dead bird, he or she must immediately go to the post or the nearest community health center to get medical assistance &ldquo So, the bird flu virus does not only attack poultry, but could also infect humans, but don&rsquo t panic because it can be prevented,&rdquo Ade said. This report is notable for two reasons: It doesn' t even mention H5N1 specifically, and it treats the new poultry outbreak as something new and strange that " could also infect humans."   |

August 04, 2015 CIDRAP: More Saudi MERS cases and deaths from Riyadh hot spot Via CIDRAP, Lisa Schirring writes: More Saudi MERS cases and deaths from Riyadh hot spot. Excerpt: Signaling what appears to be ongoing healthcare and community clusters of MERS-CoV infections in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia' s ministry of health (MOH) today reported four more cases, including three from the nation' s capital, one of them fatal. The outbreaks in Riyadh come on the heels of similar clusters in Hofuf, a city located about 208 miles east of Riyadh. Those outbreaks involved at least two hospitals, and community clusters were reported as well. Meanwhile, in fallout from South Korea' s hospital-linked Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) outbreak, the country' s president sacked the health minister. Since the virus emerged in Saudi Arabia in 2012, problems tackling outbreaks there have also led to health ministry shake-ups. Contact suspected in three new cases According to the MOH, all three of the Riyadh patients are adults who had contact with a suspected or confirmed case-patient in the community or hospital setting, one of them a health worker. They include a 78-year-old man who died from his illness and an 86-year-old man who is in critical condition. The third patient is a 31-year-old foreign woman who is a healthcare worker. She is listed in critical condition.   The fourth patient announced today by the MOH is also a health worker, a 50-year-old Saudi man from the city of Narjan, located in southern Saudi Arabia. He is hospitalized in stable condition. However, the ministry said he didn' t have any known contact with a confirmed or suspected case.   The MOH also reported four deaths from the disease in previously announced cases, all of them from Riyadh. All are men, with ages 32, 67, 75, and 78 years. The younger man is a foreigner, and he was the only one among the group who didn' t have an underlying medical condition.   Today' s cases boost Saudi Arabia' s total from the disease to 1,063 cases, 471 of them fatal. Nine patients are still in treatment, and over the course of the outbreak 583 have recovered.

August 03, 2015Saudi Arabia: Two new MERS cases as of noon August 3Via the KSA MOH Command and Control Center:  MOH : ' 2 New Confirmed Corona Cases Recorded. Both are Saudi men in Riyadh, one 53 and in stable condition, the other 75 and in critical condition. The younger man, at least, is a contact of earlier cases. The numbers are now nine cases under care, 583 recovered, 1,059 total, and 467 deaths.

By the way, these daily statements always promise more details in the " weekly update," but I have no idea where to find such updates. One " news" page hasn' t been updated since August 9, 2014, and the other is just a string of boring news releases.

August 03, 2015 US: Rocky fire in northern California swells to 60,000 acres 12,000 evacuated Via The Los Angeles Times: Rocky fire in Northern California swells to 60,000 acres 12,000 evacuated. Clear Lake is north of San Francisco and east of Point Arena. Click through for the full report, photos, and videos. Excerpt: More than 12,000 residents have been evacuated as the destructive Rocky fire exploded to 60,000 acres across three counties and consumed 50 structures, including 24 homes. The wildfire, 12% contained Monday morning, was threatening 6,301 structures in Colusa, Lake and Yolo counties as it continued to advance despite firefighting efforts. Fire activity grew dramatically in an area with &ldquo little to no fire history,&rdquo according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. More than 2,900 firefighters were aggressively working to stop the fire, but flames have been difficult to reach due to the steep, rugged area with limited access, Cal Fire said. The Rocky fire is burning east of Clear Lake in a remote area roughly between California 29 and 16, according to Cal Fire, and is the biggest of numerous fires burning in drought-plagued Northern California. Fueled by erratic winds and bone-dry woodlands, the fire has destroyed 24 residences and 26 outbuildings, Cal Fire said. " Dry thunderstorms" &mdash lightning and wind with very little rain &mdash are the main cause of roughly two dozen large blazes that have led to one firefighter' s death and prompted Gov. Jerry Brown to declare a state of emergency.   |

July 30, 2015 Hong Kong study uncovers immune system key to MERS high death rate Via the South China Morning Post: Hong Kong study uncovers immune system key to Mers high death rate. Excerpt: University of Hong Kong researchers have found Middle East respiratory syndrome (Mers) is capable of disarming a person' s immune defence system in a matter of hours. HKU microbiologist Professor Yuen Kwok-yung, who led the study, told the South China Morning Post the research offered a new explanation as to why Mers was almost four times more fatal than severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars). The results add to earlier studies which found that even though Mers spread less easily than Sars, it was more deadly. The latest findings were announced as the Hong Kong government was set to lift its travel alert against South Korea as the country will have been Mers-free for 28 days today. " We have found a major difference between Mers and Sars in the study," said Jasper Chan Fuk-woo, clinical assistant professor in microbiology at HKU, who is part of Yuen' s team. " After learning of the mechanism, we hope we can find ways to prevent the Mers virus from infecting immune cells in the future." Yuen said his research on what are known as human blood lymphocytes had found that Mers was able to infect and kill the most important cell in the immune system in just six hours. He said such an ability was rarely seen in other types of coronaviruses, including Sars. The virus triggered a process called apoptosis, or programmed cell death, in which the cells can no longer function normally and die very rapidly. Chan said patients who survived Mers usually had a better immune response than those who died. " We only knew before that Mers had a very high killing rate, but we did not know exactly why it was so deadly. Now we know what it does to immune cells," Chan said. The results of the two-year study were published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases this month.
