Bush Heads Toward Middle East The United States has ordered the deployment of a third nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, USS George H. W. Bush (CVN-77), toward the eastern Mediterranean, reinforcing U.S. naval forces already operating in the region as the conflict enters its second week. Reports say the carrier recently completed its full combat readiness exercise COMPTUEX on March 5 before receiving urgent deployment orders. Meanwhile, the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) has already transited the Suez Canal and entered the Red Sea to help intercept missiles and drones that could be launched from Yemen or Iraq. The deployment is widely seen as a strategic move by Donald Trump, aiming to expand U.S. operational reach and close potential gaps in regional defense. The carrier is expected to operate across the Mediterranean and Red Sea, placing additional pressure on the Houthi movement in Yemen amid concerns the group could escalate attacks in support of Iran. With this move, the United States now has three aircraft carrier strike groups positioned around Iran, including the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) in the Gulf of Oman, the USS Gerald R. Ford in the Red Sea, and the newly deployed USS George H. W. Bush heading toward the Mediterranean. The United States Navy stated that all carrier air wings are currently at high combat readiness and capable of launching operations within minutes if ordered.
