SIA&rsquo s Goh Choon Phong sees total annual pay jump 86% to S$6.7 million

SINGAPORE : C6L -0.53% Airlines : C6L -0.53% (SIA) chief executive officer Goh Choon Phong&rsquo s remuneration rose 86 per cent to S$6.7 million for the financial year just ended.

Goh&rsquo s compensation in the previous corresponding year was S$3.6 million, according to the company&rsquo s annual report.

Following record earnings for the year ended March, SIA rewarded eligible employees with a profit-sharing bonus of 6.65 months, and a maximum total of 1.5 months of ex-gratia bonus in recognition of their hard work and sacrifices during the pandemic.

Strong demand and a continued recovery in the global aviation industry pushed SIA&rsquo s net profit to a record S$2.2 billion, versus a net loss of S$962 million in FY2021/22

The board also rewarded shareholders with a proposed final dividend of S$0.28 per share. Including the interim dividend of S$0.10 per share, the total dividend payout for the fiscal year stands at S$0.38 per share.

SIA told Business Times recently that its staff profit-sharing compensation is based on a long-standing formula agreed with staff unions. It will also award an additional 0.5 month of ex-gratia bonus for each of the last three financial years, or a maximum total of 1.5 months, to eligible employees.

&ldquo SIA senior management will not receive this additional ex-gratia bonus,&rdquo the spokesperson added.

The group now has some 24,000 employees on its payroll, up 12.3 per cent year on year.

DBS downgrades SIA to &lsquo hold&rsquo on expected earnings slowdown

DBS Group Research has downgraded its call on Singapore Airlines : C6L +0.8% (SIA) from &ldquo buy&rdquo to &ldquo hold&rdquo . Although it remains optimistic of the national carrier&rsquo s near-term outlook, it believes earnings will peak in FY2024, it said in a Monday (Jun 26) report.

In a separate sector report, the research team has recommended investors &ldquo rotate into other parts of the aviation value chain&rdquo and switch to ST Engineering : S63 +1.68% or Sats : S58 +1.56%.

DBS noted that SIA&rsquo s promising earnings outlook has been &ldquo aptly baked&rdquo into its valuation.

The research team&rsquo s target price for SIA remains unchanged at S$6.80, implying a downside of 9.9 per cent from the counter&rsquo s trading price of S$7.55 as at the midday trading break. Shares of SIA were up 0.9 per cent or S$0.07 at the time.

This target price is based on an enterprise value over earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EV/Ebitda) ratio of 5.1 times for FY2024/2025, which is 0.55 standard deviation above SIA&rsquo s five-year pre-pandemic average.

This reflects an &ldquo imminent decline&rdquo in SIA&rsquo s estimated FY2025 earnings, said DBS analysts Jason Sum, Tabitha Foo and Paul Yong.

Even as travel picks up and capacity growth by competitors remains measured, the &ldquo supernormal&rdquo passenger yield growth seen by SIA so far could moderate on the back of stiffer competition in the region.

On top of passenger yields falling to a more &ldquo normalised&rdquo level, there is more pressure on the airline from the air cargo rates and air cargo loading segments, DBS said. It also warned that SIA may suffer greater losses from associates after Air India becomes an associate.

With all these factors coming into play, the analysts believe it is time for investors to take profit on SIA.

Furthermore, with the aviation sector progressing well against expectations in the Asia-Pacific region, DBS recommends ST Engineering&rsquo s and Sats&rsquo stocks as they offer &ldquo sustained growth and a more favourable risk-to-reward profile&rdquo .

ST Engineering is DBS&rsquo top pick at this juncture, given its strong medium-term growth projection. DBS expects a compound annual growth rate of 15.5 per cent over SIA&rsquo s FY2022 to FY2024 estimated earnings. Its target price on the counter stands at S$4.20.

As the MRO segment is expected to see strong demand in maintenance, repair and overhaul works over the next few years, DBS believes ST Engineering&rsquo s stock will see more upside as its valuation has yet to reflect the multiple growth levers that the industry is experiencing.

The analysts also favour Sats as an attractive option, as its current valuation is not indicative of its long-term earnings capability and the majority of downside risks are already factored in its valuation. It has a S$3.20 target on the stock.

They maintained that although air cargo volumes remained soft in 2023 year to date, the segment could see a turnaround by the later part of the year and Sats could stand to gain.

The strong rebound in air travel also helped Sats in its ground-handling and aviation food business, although a lack of near-term catalysts could delay its rerating until later, said DBS.

Garuda earned more than SIA? How to buy Garuda?
But along with other neighbouring flag carriers, Garuda is faring much better today, having recorded in 2022 a profit of US$3.9 billion - the biggest in its 74-year history - as the pandemic eased off and travel restrictions loosened. Across the strait, Malaysia Airlines (MAB) also turned profitable last year after back-to-back losses, in a turnaround that tripled its revenue due to strong demand internationally. And regional standout Singapore Airlines (SIA) marked a milestone profit of US$1.6 billion for the 2022-2023 financial year ending in March, the largest in its 76 years of operating. |

" target price is based on an FY2024 book value per share of 1.1x."   Interesting. Target price $6.8, p/b ratio 1.1, book value per share abt $6.2 At $6.8, assume eps 0.42c (most people expect good business) , pe ratio abt 16.2 Valuation seems more realistic. Meaning downside -0.67.

PhillipCapital re-initiates ' reduce' on SIA with TP of $6.80

PhillipCapital analyst Peggy Mak has re-initiated coverage on Singapore Airlines C6L 0.00% (SIA) with a &ldquo reduce&rdquo call and a target price of $6.80.

In her June 22 report, Mak notes that SIA may have enjoyed an &ldquo exceptional&rdquo year for the FY2023 due to its first-mover advantage, its tapering passenger yields and load factors may cause the airline&rsquo s FY2024 and FY2025 net profit to decline by 24% and 46% respectively.

In addition, the airline will see net cash outflow in FY2024 as it will have to spend $3.35 billion to partially redeem its second tranche of mandatory convertible bonds (MCBs) in June. SIA will also have to spend on renewing its fleet of aircraft as well as expand and invest around $360 million in the merged Vistara/Air India group, notes Mak. SIA owns a 49% stake in Vistara.

That said, the potential merger of Vistara and Air India will yield the airline a non-cash accounting gain of $1.1 billion as it writes back its investment in the former.

&ldquo The enlarged entity will have a dominant share of 23% each of domestic and international passenger traffic in India. However, on a pro-forma basis, it is still in net loss of $1.02bn in 1HFY2022/2023. With a 25.1% stake, SIA would recognize its share of profit or loss,&rdquo writes Mak.

Mak&rsquo s target price is based on an FY2024 book value per share of 1.1x.

&ldquo We expect SIA to deliver sustainable return on equity (ROE) of 8%, from which we derived a target price to book of 1.1x at cost of equity (COE) of 7.0%,&rdquo she says.

As at March 31, the group has 195 aircraft (comprising 188 passenger aircraft and seven freighters) in its operating fleet. SIA itself has 133 passenger aircraft and seven freighters while its low-cost carrier arm, Scoot, has 55 passenger aircraft. The group currently has 100 aircraft in its order book.
