x 0   x 0  Alert Admin	In many countries, the subway systems are loss making, year in year out. It is no secret because public transportations are supposed to be heavily subsidised by the government. I do hope SMRT is taken back by the govt, and use our tax dollars wisely to subsidise the majority of the population. Elderly people like us still remember how STC (Singapore Traction Co - at that time, the only public bus coy if I remember correctly) had to fold up in 1973 as they found ops unstainable. But to have the audacity to ask for (n worse be granted) a fare increase in the face of rising profits seems hard to unjustify. As a public listed coy, one cannot fault shareholders for raising profit expectations especially given the coy' s monopolistic n protected position. So, share px is chased up when profits rise. This in turn fuel even higher pressure on the coy management to improve profitability further to meet the ever rising expectations of shareholders. It' s a vicious cycle that consumers seem to be the real losers. Actually, it wld appear that govt is subsidising dividends through funding part of the bus fleet. So, best to take the coy private. That way, govt can continue to subsidise ops more euitably for the benefit of consumers.
