While the world may seem panicky, our govt is cool about it, annoucing additional 6 VTLs, a total of 27 VTLs. There is no concern on this new virus once you bannned people from coming from these Africa countries. Singapore badly needs workers from India, and other South Asia countries. Without foreign workers, Singapore is finished. Secondly, with high jab and booster rates, there is little concern on the new virus as what we can see from the mild action from the govt. There is certainly no circuit breaker in the future in Singapore given the high vaccination rate.  |

The World Health Organization on Friday assigned the Greek letter Omicron to a newly identified Covid variant in South Africa. The U.N. health agency recognized the strain, previously referred to as  lineage B.1.1.529, as a variant of concern.
Health experts are  deeply concernedabout the transmissibility of the Omicron variant given that it has an unusual constellation of mutations and a profile that is different from other variants of concern. &ldquo This variant has a large number of mutations, some of which are concerning,&rdquo the WHO said in a statement released Friday. &ldquo Preliminary evidence suggests an increased risk of reinfection with this variant, as compared to other VOCs.&rdquo   It is feared a sharp upswing of Covid cases in South Africa&rsquo s Gauteng province &mdash where the heavily mutated strain of the virus was first identified &mdash could mean it has greater potential to escape prior immunity than other variants. The number of Omicron cases &ldquo appears to be increasing&rdquo in almost all of South Africa&rsquo s provinces, the WHO reported.  The designation of a new variant of concern coupled with mounting alarm from health officials  sent global markets into a tailspin on Friday. Oil prices and travel and leisure stocks took heavy losses on the news. To be sure, WHO has said it will take weeks to understand how the variant may impact diagnostics, therapeutics and vaccines.
What do we know so far?South African scientist Tulio de Oliveira said at a media briefing on Thursday that the Omicron variant contains around 50 mutations, but more than 30 of these are in the spike protein, the region of the protein that interacts with human cells prior to cell entry. What&rsquo s more, the receptor binding domain (the part of the virus that first makes contact with our cells) has 10 mutations, far greater than just two for the delta Covid variant, which spread rapidly earlier this year to become the dominant strain worldwide. This level of mutation means it most likely came from a single patient who could not clear the virus, giving it the chance to genetically evolve. The same hypothesis was proposed for the alpha Covid variant. Around 100 Omicron variant genomes have been identified in South Africa, mostly in the Gauteng province. The variant has also been detected in Israel, Botswana and Hong Kong. Many of the mutations identified in the Omicron variant are linked to increased antibody resistance, which may reduce the effectiveness of vaccines and affect how the virus behaves with regard to inoculation, treatments and transmissibility,  health officials have said.

&ldquo There are two approaches to what happens next: wait for more scientific evidence &mdash or act now and row back later if it wasn&rsquo t required,&rdquo said Sharon Peacock, professor of public health and microbiology at the University of Cambridge. &ldquo I believe that it is better to &lsquo go hard, go early and go fast&rsquo and apologise if mistaken, than to take an academic view that we need to reach a tipping point in evidence before action is taken. Rapid spread in South Africa could be due to super-spreader events or other factors. But there are sufficient red flags to assume the worst rather than hope for the best &mdash and take a precautionary approach,&rdquo Peacock said. The European Union, the U.K., Israel and Singapore are among the countries to have  moved  to impose travel restrictions on southern African nations. The WHO has cautioned countries against hastily imposing travel restrictions, saying countries should instead take a &ldquo risk-based scientific approach.&rdquo South Africa&rsquo s foreign ministry said on Friday morning that the U.K.&rsquo s decision to take precautionary measures &ldquo seems to have been rushed as even the WHO is yet to advise on the next steps.&rdquo &mdash CNBC&rsquo s Elliot Smith contributed to this report. |

out of 50 mutations, 30 are on spike protein alone which is the main target in current vaccines. this potentially mean that current vaccines are useless against it. if that happens, all of us are unvaxed and cannot go into malls🤣

The World Health Organization will meet on Friday to discuss a new  heavily-mutated variant of Covid-19. The variant known as B.1.1.529 has been detected in small numbers in South Africa, WHO officials said, with reports on Friday morning of cases being found in Israel and Hong Kong.
Here&rsquo s what we know so far: Multiple mutationsSouth African scientist Tulio de Oliveira said in a media briefing held by the South Africa Department of Health on Thursday that the variant contains a &ldquo unique constellation&rdquo of more than 30 mutations to the spike protein, the component of the virus that binds to cells. This is significantly more than those of the delta variant. Many of these mutations are linked to increased antibody resistance, which may affect how the virus behaves with regard to vaccines, treatments and transmissibility, health officials have said. In total, de Oliveira said the variant contains around 50 mutations. The receptor binding domain (the part of the virus that first makes contact with cells) has 10 mutations, far greater than just two for the delta Covid variant, which spread rapidly earlier this year to become the dominant strain worldwide. This level of mutation means it&rsquo s possible that it came from a single patient who could not clear the virus, giving it the chance to genetically evolve. The same hypothesis was proposed for the alpha Covid variant.
Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO&rsquo s technical lead on Covid-19, said in a livestreamed Q& A on Thursday that scientists &ldquo don&rsquo t know very much about this yet&rdquo and that it would take a few weeks to gain a full picture of how the variant reacts to existing vaccines. &lsquo Most significant variant&rsquo to dateThe U.K. immediately moved to ban flights  from South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, Namibia, Eswatini and Zimbabwe from noon on Friday to 4 a.m. local time on Sunday. The U.K. Health Security Agency is investigating the variant, which Health Secretary Sajid Javid said is &ldquo potentially concerning.&rdquo No cases have yet been identified in the U.K., and Javid emphasized that although more data is needed at this early stage, the government had opted to take precautions.
&ldquo This is the most significant variant we have encountered to date and urgent research is underway to learn more about its transmissibility, severity and vaccine-susceptibility,&rdquo said U.K. HSA Chief Executive Jenny Harries. Israel has also barred travel to several southern African nations over the new variant, as well as Singapore and several other nations. Israel has reported one case of the new variant in a traveler returning from Malawi. Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett met with health experts on Friday to discuss the country&rsquo s response, which could reportedly include declaring a state of emergency. Belgium on Friday afternoon became the  first European country to report  a case of the B.1.1.529 variant. Easier to contain?&ldquo It looks like this particular variant has a very concerning sets of mutations especially in the spike protein, which is needed for its transmission properties as well as its protection against the vaccines, so based on the genetic information we are quite concerned about it,&rdquo Pasi Penttinen, public health emergency response manager at the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, told CNBC Friday. &ldquo We still have a lot more to learn about the situation in South Africa and all the efforts should now be not only in South Africa, but countries in the southern African region, to ensure that they get a full picture of this virus.&rdquo However, Francois Balloux, an epidemiologist and director of University College London&rsquo s Genetics Institute, told the BBC on Friday that the early discovery of the variant could render it easier to contain. Balloux added that even if B.1.1.529 is more transmissible than previous variants, it would not &ldquo bring us to square one&rdquo in the effort to contain the virus. He suggested that it should be seen an irritating setback rather than a rebirth of the pandemic. Spread not yet knownThe first genomes of the new variant were uploaded to the international GISAID database on Nov. 22, but genomes have now been uploaded from South Africa, Botswana, Hong Kong and Israel, with the extent of the spread not yet known. Cases have been concentrated so far in Gauteng, South Africa&rsquo s most populated region and home to almost 16 million people, South African Health Minister Joe Phaahla said during Thursday&rsquo s briefing. The two cases in Hong Kong were identified in a quarantine hotel, with one person who traveled from South Africa suspected to have passed the virus on to a person in a neighboring room. The new development comes as cases of Covid-19, mostly the older delta variant, surge around the world heading into the winter months. Multiple countries in Europe, in particular, have seen record spikes, and have implemented strict containment measures. CNBC Health & Science Read CNBC&rsquo s latest global coverage of the Covid pandemic: WHO calls special meeting to discuss new Covid variant with &lsquo a large number of mutations&rsquo Germany considers a full Covid lockdown and mandatory vaccines WHO says fully vaccinated should wear masks and physically distance as Covid infections surge &lsquo Vaccinated, recovered or dead&rsquo : Germany gives stark winter warning to its people White House says U.S. will not lock down to fight Covid as European nations implement restrictions

William Schaffner, professor of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University, told CNBC Friday that suggestions that the variant could be more transmissible than delta, and that it could evade vaccine protections, meant it is &ldquo a matter of some serious concern.&rdquo &ldquo The delta variant is already extraordinarily transmissible. It is really difficult to think of another virus that is more transmissible,&rdquo Schaffner told CNBC&rsquo s &ldquo Squawk Box Asia.&rdquo &ldquo If we have another Covid strain that can spread even more readily than delta, that would pose a challenge to all of us around the world, because when delta arrived this summer, it changed the game.&rdquo One positive so far, however, is that the variant has not yet been associated with more severe cases of Covid-19, Schaffner noted. Markets roiledThe  South African rand nosedived  on Friday to 16.15 against  the dollar  as investors rushed for cover. Markets around the world tumbledsharply in response to the news, with the pan-European  Stoxx 600  dropping 2.8% by mid-afternoon on Friday and U.S. stock futures pointing to an opening loss on the  Dow Jones Industrial Average  of more than 700 points. - CNBC&rsquo s Silvia Amaro contributed to this report. |

Belgium has confirmed a case of the new, heavily mutated variant of the virus that causes Covid-19, according to one of the country&rsquo s leading virologists. Marc Van Ranst, who works with the Rega Institute, said a sample was confirmed as the novel B.1.1.529 variant in a traveler who returned from Egypt on Nov. 11. The patient first showed symptoms on Nov. 22.

Belgium is home to the capital of the European Union in Brussels. The variant was first detected in a small number of samples in South Africa, according to the World Health Organization. There were also reports on Friday morning that cases had been found in Israel and Hong Kong. The B.1.1.529 variant contains 30 mutations to the spike protein that allows the virus to enter the body, scientist Tulio de Oliveira  said Thursdayduring a briefing held by the South African Department of Health. The new strain has roughly 50 mutations in total, including 10 to the part of the virus that first comes in contact with cells. |
