Dividend cut is a warning also to investors who buy banks in recession. Sgx got many stocks. Why need buy banks during recession? Buy when economy better is correct, especially for banks.

There is a difference between already approved vs subject to approve.
DBS div is subject to AGM approve.

Breaking news today, HSBC investors are forcing an EGM to get the bank to pay dividends. And also looking to sue the bank. Let this be a warning to any bank attempting to cancel dividends.

Agree. The dividends are already allocated and as a business - the foundation of the company is supported by investor confidence/trust and in this case account to about 64% of market capital of the company.  The payment is a non-issue, in my honest view. Furthermore the business operation of a bank is hardly affected, unlike gambling, entertainment etc

dividend from business is one of the best way to boost economy. small investors spending dividend helps the economic wheel to spin. big investor will have cash to do more scooping under value business.   |

I will be very surprised if DBS doesn't pay this dividend. Not only because it is not in financial distress but also for Singapore and for a bank, trust (信 ) is more important than anything else.

i think for a solid company like dbs, stop or not stop dividends is not really an issue for long term investors. the crisis will past (if not it' s end of the world anyway), dbs will resume its earning power in a matter of time, and the share price reverts. speaking of 2009, well, dividend or not i never track but i remember the rights : https://www.reuters.com/article/dbs/update-1-singapore-dbss-2-7-bln-rights-issue-oversubscribed-idUSLL17722620090121 but for short term trading, it' s beyond my game. |

current proposed dividend of $0.33 should be paid but AGM date not fixed due to covid-19 movement restrictions. future dividend  reduction or not still early to say. we dont mixed up the two. |

I stand by my position on the potential risk of dividend reduction or stoppage after May dividend. We are in un- precedented time which has brought the global economies to a abrupt halt. Just look at the hard data on job loss in US and Europe. This has never happened in the past 19 years of DBS dividend paying years not even during SARS or GFC. I' m vested in DBS and hope that they will not stop paying dividend even at lower rate. But I' m a realist too and I' m more than happy if my concern is a non-event.

again, i have to disagree on the word stop paying dividend. using historical basis as justification (19 years record), DBS pays dividends all the time, even under more challenging conditions. Please click on the link to debunk any fears. But yes, dividend amounts varies. https://www.dbs.com/investors/financials/dividend-information

I don' t disagree with some of your points. I' m sure that the Singapore government will also take the need to upkeep their reputation as a global financial centre into consideration during this challenging time. Personally, I think the May dividend should be intact since they have annouced this. Subsequent dividends would be at risk of being reduced or stopped.

Disclaimer : I am not saying any specific companies did that but to me, shares buy-back can mean buy back from some specific investors. It can be done because there is such things as 'priority queues', 'private deals', 'married deals', 'pre-opening, pre-closing, lunchbreak matchings" etc. SGX is highly computerised and this is not a problem at all. It is all within the confines of the law. Nothing illegal.
This explains why shares buy-back usually happen in a bear market and down trend and hence it is nothing to cheer about.

Yes, it's likely your own tots. Even during previous worse recessions, dbs paid divy even at reduced rates. Never stopped. I know it's easy to logic think, but need to do more research la

Then enlighten me why sharebuy back is needed when the whole mkt is down? Issit this throwing money to sea? The whole mkt is falling. DBS spend $20m each day to buy back shares for? Whats the point
Sharebuy back needed, if say, a company is unfairly targeted by shortlists and the mtgm KNOW that the value of company is undervalued and the company has no irregularities. Note the word ?KNOW?. We seen companies like noble doing share buy backs.. end up theres something wrong with the company.

Yes, to be truthful, it is. I am not some insider in DBS or the government. This is only my own reading. But one which I believe I am not alone in. Consider the facts :- 1) Bigger banks around the globe are cancelling dividend payments and share buy-backs to keep cash. 2) NPL have not been mentioned yet but can anyone believe that it won' t be the worst ever seen this year ? 3) DBS principle ownership is with the Singaproe government 4) Singapore Government is calling on everyone to do national service. And with the financial insituitions, it is  not just to stay at home. 5) On recently announced dividend payment, this is subject to share-holder approval. And guess who holds the most shares ? But again, this is my own reading. Make your own decisions.
