 Alert Admin 		Short covering is the best tool to smash through a sell wall. Even better than a herd of bulls. Technical analysis works best for high volume counters like Genting when there are no major news. Then can just sit there and scalp unemotionally. Once there is major positive news, it does not matter what the chart is showing. A volatile guy like Trump is very good for options because of the volatility he generates. One moment trade war the next moment syria and then sex scandal. Genting: $1.03 决 对 没 错 !

China and US are big countries. Small countries (like SG) can take sides, which will add little value to either of them, because we are too small to be a significant friend, and too small to be a significant enemy. Phillipines, Malaysia, all the small countries are lining up to take sides, what makes Singapore different if we also line up to take sides? Or we can add value to the situation by becoming a broker of peace between both these big countries? This is also why LKY has always believed that Singapore cannot wait for foreign events to hit our shores before we react, instead we must go in and shape the events before the events shape us. If SG can create value between both countries and make itself relevant by helping to broker peace between US and China, rather than mindlessly taking sides like the other small countries around, Singapore will be able to differentiate itself from the rest of the pack, punch above its weight and position itself as the Geneva of Asia. For Singapore to be a US puppet or China puppet, is not what LKY envisioned Singapore to be.

Of course, this is a tall order to expect of our PM, but multiple misunderstandings exist between US and China because both countries have different
bottomlines, and different taboos. The key for successful engagement is not for Americans to teach Chinese how to live their lives, or for Chinese to teach Americans that life is more than money. Both sides will continue living the way they are, continue to value things the way they always have, they are separate, and they will continue to be different. International relations is not the same as commerce, not everything can be exchanged one-for-one. You can' t force a Middle East country to compromise their religion by offering them good trade deals, good military deals, or even by offering them land, because religion is a bottomline for that culture and it is non-negotiable. China will have things it considers sacred and non-negotiable, and so will the US. We have to accept that different cultures will prioritize things differently, and successful engagement requires us to approach them from an angle they consider acceptable. As George Yeo said, Singapore can perform " cultural arbitrage" by brokering deals between countries that simply cannot broker deals 1 to 1, they have to go through Singapore. Singapore is uniquely positioned to understand both cultures, and add value by helping both countries engage each other successfully, through mutual understanding, and not 1-for-1 or tit-for-tat.

Unlike a happy deal where you find a seller who wants to sell a house for 1M, and a buyer who wants to buy a house of 1.5M, and you take a cut of the 0.5M difference, he is facing a situation where the seller wants to sell for 1.5M and the buyer wants to pay 0.5M. Both sides have already 撕 破 脸 at this point and spat at each other' s face, so the only way out is to go through an honest broker that both sides still can trust. This is a role that countries like Malaysia, which has already declared its loyalty with China, or Japan/South Korea, which has already declared its loyalty to the US, cannot perform. Hong Kong is part of China so cannot. In fact, all the countries that have already declared their loyalty, cannot perform this role. Trump does not believe in the WTO, and he is using Section 301 anyway, which sidesteps the WTO. Trump has scores to settle with the EU, and EU also has intellectual property issues with China. Switzerland maybe, but why would it bother, and it does not understand China. Singapore has steadfastly refused to take sides for or against either US or China, at some point even at the cost of losing the Terrex temporarily, thereby incurring the wrath of its own citizens who don' t understand and simply wanted Singapore to support China. This is the political capital Singapore has been storing up for, and its position as an honest broker it has done everything it could to preserve, so now the honour of defusing this situation goes to Singapore, which has the understanding, incentive, and ability to pull this off, so that both sides can step back from the brink without losing face. If PM Lee can pull this off, the long-term payoff will be big, and he would have successfully stepped into his father' s shoes.

President Xi Jinping says China to reduce tariffs, enhance imports

BOAO, CHINA (REUTERS, XINHUA, AFP) - Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Tuesday (April 10) that China will significantly lower import tariffs for vehicles and reduce import tariffs for some other products this year.

&ldquo We will take the initiative to expand imports,&rdquo Mr Xi said in a keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the Boao Forum for Asia annual conference, which is being  held in the southern island province of Hainan. 

The country will work hard to import more products that are competitive and needed by the Chinese people, he said.

China will also seek faster progress toward joining the WTO Government Procurement Agreement, according to the President.

&ldquo China does not seek a trade surplus we have a genuine desire to increase imports and achieve greater balance of international payments under the current account,&rdquo he said.

China will also improve the investment environment for foreign investors, President Xi said.
Likening the investment environment to air, Mr Xi said that only fresh air can attract more investment from the outside.


&ldquo China relied mainly on providing favourable policies for foreign investors in the past, but now we will have to rely more on improving the investment environment,&rdquo he said.

Mr Xi said that China will complete the revision of a negative list on foreign investment in the first half of the year and implement across the board a management system based on pre-establishment national treatment.

&ldquo We will enhance alignment with international economic and trading rules, increase transparency, strengthen property rights protection, uphold the rule of law, encourage competition and oppose monopoly,&rdquo he said.

In March, China established a host of new agencies such as the State Administration for Market Regulation as part of a major readjustment of government institutions.

The purpose of this readjustment, Mr Xi said, was to remove the systematic and institutional obstacles that prevent the market from playing a decisive role in resources allocation, and enable the government to better play its role.

China will not threaten anyone else, attempt to overturn the existing international system, or seek spheres of influence, no matter how much progress it has made in development, President Xi said.

The country will &ldquo stay as determined as ever to build world peace, contribute to global prosperity and uphold the international order" ,  he said.

Mr Xi said that China&rsquo s reform and opening up will definitely succeed and that a Cold War mentality, zero-sum thinking, and isolationism would hit walls.

Mr Xi said that opening brings progress, while closure would lead to backwardness.

&ldquo Putting oneself on a pedestal or trying to make oneself immune from adverse developments will get nowhere,&rdquo said Mr Xi in his keynote speech at the opening ceremony of annual conference.

Mr Xi said humanity has a major choice to make between openness and isolation, and between progress and retrogression.

&ldquo We must dispel the clouds to see the sun, as we say in Chinese, so as to have a keen grasp of the law of history and the trend of the world,&rdquo said Mr Xi.

Mr Xi said we live in a time with an overwhelming trend toward peace and cooperation as well as openness and connectivity.

Mr Xi said we also live in a time with an overwhelming trend toward reform and innovation, adding that those who reject them will be left behind and assigned to the dustbin of history.

He called for people around the world to work together toward a community with a shared future for mankind and make Asia and the world peaceful, tranquil, prosperous, open and beautiful.

&ldquo With the future in mind, we need to treat each other with respect and as equals,&rdquo said Mr Xi.

With the future in mind, Mr Xi said, we also need to promote dialogue and share responsibility, engage in cooperation for win-win results, uphold inclusiveness and seek harmony without uniformity, as well as treat nature with respect and treasure our planet.

Speaking of the first China International Import Expo to be held in Shanghai this November, Mr Xi said friends from around the world were welcome to participate in the Expo.

&ldquo It is not just another expo in an ordinary sense, but a major policy initiative and commitment taken of our own accord to open up the Chinese market,&rdquo he said.

Mr Xi&rsquo s speech came two days after US President Donald Trump suggested that he saw an end to the two countries'   trade dispute, which has included tit-for-tat tariffs and threats for more punishing duties by both nations.

&ldquo President Xi and I will always be friends,&rdquo Mr Trump tweeted on Sunday.  &ldquo China will take down its trade barriers because it is the right thing to do.&rdquo

Mr Xi did not directly address the trade dispute in his speech.

But Mr Trump on Monday railed against Chinese tariffs on car imports and the Chinese Foreign Ministry warned that trade talks with the United States were &ldquo impossible&rdquo under current conditions.

&ldquo When a car is sent to the United States from China, there is a tariff to be paid of 2 1/2%. When a car is sent to China from the United States, there is a tariff to be paid of 25%,&rdquo Mr Trump tweeted.

&ldquo Does that sound like free or fair trade. No, it sounds like STUPID TRADE &ndash going on for years!&rdquo
