The higher COE costs will have to be aborbed by drivers in the form of higher rental. As Zoom Bee has to replace its I40 soon, I expect rental to go up probably for all drivers new or old to share out the costs. We might probably see another round of key throwing by the drivers to jump to PHVs when this happens.
When driverless taxis are put on the road, there will be no more drivers to aborb the high costs. Based on Uber and Baidu's experience, fares will be as per normal taxis heavily subsidised by the companies.

Taxis qnd PHVs alike need to pay COE. The only difference is taxi companies need not bid but pay for 7 years (prevailingrates)which is the life span allowed for taxis.
Grab allows COE cars on its platform. Drivers can buy or rent from the market new or COE cars to keep their costs low.

The cost of COE and the cost of having a human driver in the eyes of the ride hailing platform is fungible in todays regulatory framework. If self-driving is widely adopted, driver cost being zerorised, then I expect COE to shoot thru the roof where only the ultra rich and the cash rich, market share driven, angel investor funded platforms can afford to bid for one.  Then again, with such a fundamental shift in the transport landscape, I expect LTA rules to also shift with the times with the objectives of promoting market competition as well as govt revenue generation.

bro you have really discounted the fact that in SG PHV cars need COE PHV cars COE is not taxi COE this company has solid cash generation abilities don' t discount that fact and assume they cannot buy more taxis than grab or gojek can buy more cars

Ride-hailing operator Grab will raise its platform fee from 30 cents to 70 cents starting from May 5, a move it described as being in line with platform fees charged by other ride-hailing platforms. In an e-mail sent to customers on Friday night, Grab said the new fee will be reflected on all its transport service types, including GrabShare, which allows commuters to book shared rides on private-hire cars and taxis and was reintroduced on Jan 16 after a halt during the Covid-19 pandemic. ?This will support the development of continuous app improvements such as safety features, increased reliability and driver-related benefits,? it said in the e-mail, which outlined ways in which it was trying to improve its shortage of drivers. Gojek also has a platform fee of 70 cents for every trip, although others in the ride-hailing space charge different amounts. Ride-hailing app Tada charges customers 55 cents for trips that cost up to $18, while those that cost more have an additional cost of 75 cents. Ryde?s platform fee is 30 cents, while ComfortDelGro?s taxi booking app does not charge customers any platform fee. After the latest announcement from Grab, undergraduate Janellia Kwan said she would be less likely to use the platform when she needs to commute. ?Grab was always a last resort, especially since its surge prices made trips a lot pricier. ?I?ve been using (ride-hailing app) Tada a lot more, and I think this will just reaffirm my decision,? said the 22-year-old. |

Your view about the driver is exactly the same of that of Uber's founder Travis Kalanick, who said 'that guy in the car' was why Uber was losing money.
But what has happened to Uber's driverless car project which started in 2015? Why has Grab not talked about driverless cars? To fight PHV, going driverless is another wrong strategy because even if driverless cars can make money (they cant!), they can be bought with money and Uber and Grab and GoJek have much deeper pocket to buy more of them than this dinosaur can. I dont mind to own one for fun but this is going to be the dinosaur's last straw if it really wants to go big on this kind of high tech toy.

actually the real problem plaguing Singapore taxi industry is that a good chunk of value is accrued towards the driver everytime a new ride hailing app comes into Singapore, the first thing they do is to entice drivers to move to their platforms that has really weighed on the profitability of taxi companies and ride hailing companies doing away with the driver is the beginning of cutting out the middle man and a huge cost center. i am positive on self driving cars even though i think it will be some time before regulations allow fully unmanned self driving car to roam around in SG

With self-driving, I think ride hailing will be come a lot simpler making the barrier to entry lower since the ride matching algorithm don' t have to deal with driver-side restrictions. COE will probably shoot thru the roof with investor money pouring in to " grab" market share. The one with the best self driving vehicle, shortest time to charge, highest running time ratio, lowest repair costs will probably prevail - probably a mainland Chinese competitor.

Source: Nikkei Asia, 17 Jan 23   SINGAPORE -- ComfortDelGro, Singapore' s largest taxi operator, is investing $4 million in Israeli self-driving software startup Ottopia, tapping more outside technology in its push toward autonomous transportation. The investment announced last week leverages ComfortDelGro' s $100 million venture capital fund focused on the field. Ottopia offers a system that lets people monitor self-driving vehicles remotely. The move fits ComfortDelGro' s strategy of acquiring autonomous-driving technologies through investment or tie-ups rather than developing them  on its own. It also has partnered with Israeli automotive chip company Mobileye, aiming to roll out self-driving taxis in Singapore. ComfortDelGro has brought  self-driving technology closer to commercialization, including operating an autonomous shuttle bus on the campus of the National University of Singapore for over a year. The company hopes to bring  the technology to other markets as well. It has a fleet of 34,000 taxis, buses and rental vehicles across seven countries  including Australia, the U.K. and China. |
