Shanghai: Stocks close up on late afternoon rally MAR 1, 20163: 35 PM [SHANGHAI] China stocks closed up on Tuesday led by a late afternoon rally after the central bank cut reserve requirements for banks on Monday evening, the latest effort by authorities to try and shore up a faltering economy. The CSI300 index of the largest listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen rose 1.9 per cent, to 2,930.69, while the Shanghai Composite Index gained 1.7 per cent, to 2,733.17 points. Indexes were led by financials and industrials with property shares outperforming, the last on signs of rising speculative interest in tier one markets. Gains were checked by disappointing manufacturing and service sector surveys, which highlighted the wider challenges faced by the world' s second-largest economy. REUTERS |

China stimulus buoys Australian stocks as yen hits japan futures MAR 1, 20168: 59 AM Stocks in Australia and New Zealand climbed after China bolstered economic stimulus, while Japanese index futures signaled losses following a resurgence in the yen. Energy and mining shares drove gains in Sydney as the kiwi dollar tracked an advance in the local equity market. Chinese index futures also rose in most recent trading. The yen extending its climb into a second day weighed on the outlook for Japanese stocks, with contracts on the Nikkei 225 Stock Average declining at least 0.3 per cent in Chicago and in the Osaka pre-market. US crude held near its highest level in more than seven weeks, while copper futures retreated. Gold extended its rally. The yuan held gains offshore after the People' s Bank of China announced a cut in reserve-requirement ratios. Stocks Australia' s S & P / ASX 200 Index added 0.8 per cent as of 8:54 am Tokyo time, while the S & P / NZX 50 Index in Wellington climbed 0.3 per cent. Futures on the FTSE China A50 Index jumped 1.4 per cent in most recent trading, while contracts on Hong Kong' s Hang Seng and Hang Seng China Enterprises indexes climbed at least 1.2 per cent. A raft of manufacturing purchasing managers' indexes are due Tuesday, including for China, India and Japan. |

North and South American Indexes
 Stocks lower as early gains fade oil higher A gauge of global equity stocks turned lower on Monday as oil prices pulled back from earlier highs and investors took profits on last week' s gains. Saudi Arabia announced a plan to work with OPEC members Venezuela and Qatar and non-OPEC producer Russia on a plan to freeze oil output at January highs. A Reuters survey also indicated the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries pumped less crude this month than in January, boosting market sentiment. Oil' s move higher initially helped markets overcome an unexpected drop in contracts for home resales to the lowest level in a year and a dismal report on U.S. business sentiment. But equity markets reversed after Brent crude pulled back from earlier highs. " The market' s had a big run, so I do not think it' s anything drastic, just lightening up after a big pop," said J.J. Feldman, portfolio manager at Miracle Mile Advisors in Los Angeles. " Volatility' s kind of dying down and you' re seeing some profit taking ahead of some big data coming up this week," Feldman said. Two manufacturing purchasing managers index surveys will be released on Tuesday and on Friday the Labor Department will release the U.S. non-farm payrolls report. Brent futures LCOc1 settled up 2.5 percent at $ 35.97 a barrel. U.S. crude futures CLc1 settled up 3 percent at $ 33.75. China' s central bank cut its reserve requirement ratio, the amount of cash banks must hold as reserves, injecting an estimated $ 100 billion worth of long-term cash into the economy. Global Stocks Lower on China Currency Concerns Global stock markets fell Monday after officials guided the Chinese currency to its weakest level in three weeks. The Stoxx Europe 600 was down 0.4% halfway through the session, on track for its third consecutive month of losses, despite a rebound last week. Futures pointed to a 0.3% opening loss for the S & P 500. Changes in futures do not necessarily reflect market moves after the opening bell. As investors moved out of stocks, haven assets gained, with gold up 1.2% at $ 1,235 an ounce. The dollar fell 0.9% against the yen to ¥ 113.0130, while the yield on the 10-year German government bond fell to its lowest level since April last year. Yields fall as prices rise. China' s central bank guided the yuan lower for a fifth consecutive session on Monday, even after officials at a world economic gathering in Shanghai tried to dispel concerns about its economy. Some investors were also disappointed after a Group of 20 meeting of finance ministers over the weekend failed to yield concrete measures to stabilize international markets and fuel growth. " The G-20 meeting does not seem to have delivered anything significant," said Sanjiv Shah, chief investment officer at Sun Global Investments. Keeping losses in check, however, the People' s Bank of China cut its reserve requirement ratio for all banks by half a percentage point, effective Tuesday, to boost liquidity and keep credit growth stable. The announcement followed a weaker close for Asian markets, with most major indexes closing out the month in the red. The Shanghai Composite Index was down 2.9% Monday, near its lowest level in 14 months. Monday' s losses followed a slightly weaker close for Wall Street Friday, but U.S. stocks still posted their second consecutive week of gains, fueled by a rise in crude oil prices. That trend continued early Monday, with Brent crude oil last up 0.7% at $ 35.33 a barrel. " Primarily, I want to see if consumers in the U.S., China and Europe are going to remain healthy," said Carmel Wellso, portfolio manager of the Janus International Equity Fund, noting she will also be watching global trade figures closely. Singapore shares close mixed STI enjoys late window-dressing push
HE Straits Times Index struggled for most of Monday to stay in the black in the face of selling pressure in China and Hong Kong, dipping briefly into the red in the late afternoon before a late, month-end window-dressing push took it to a gain of 17.13 points at 2,666.51. General sentiment was cautious, understandable given the volatility of the past few weeks. Brokers did however, note that swings in China were having less of an impact here than they did earlier in the year. " We saw stocks like Singtel and UOB jump off their lows, most probably window-dressing," said a dealer. " The Dow futures is -90 so if Wall Street tanks on Monday, Tuesday could see the index fall back." |
