IT DOESN' T pay to short-sell Olam International' s shares - in a quiet session for the local stock market on Friday, the main talking point came from an unexpected source - the buying-in segment, where a whopping 13.2 million shares of Olam International that were short-sold on Tuesday were queued to be bought in but only 4.12 million were done at 5pm. Because the short sale was done at S$2.15 and because Friday' s buying-in was between S$2.25 and S$2.43 for an average of about S$2.35, the loss to the short-seller so far is estimated at around S$800,000 - with more to come. Olam was dropped from the MSCI Singapore Index or SiMSCI from Wednesday onwards and replaced by Suntec Reit. On Tuesday, Olam' s shares fell S$0.05 to S$2.15 on total volume of 40 million done, of which 24 million was crossed after 5pm at S$2.15. Dealers believe that included in that late trade was the 13.2 million that was a " naked" short sale. On Friday, buying-in of Olam started at S$2.25 and by the close of trading, the price had been raised to S$2.43. The remaining 9.1 million shares not bought will have to be done on Monday. The large amount in the buying-in segment led to Olam' s price rising in the ready market - the stock traded at an intraday high of S$2.31 in mid-afternoon but ended the day only a net S$0.03 higher at S$2.16 with 17.3 million shares done. " There are a lot of traders punting this," said a dealer. " People who have scrip in their CDP accounts should logically be selling in the buying-in market and immediately buying back in the ready market, thus profiting from the spread. This should cause the ready market' s price to rise, yet after the ready market' s price rose to S$2.31, it actually fell back." Another said the real question is who would have taken such a risk. " If it was a fund manager risking clients' money, was this done with clients' knowledge? If not, should he keep his job?"
