With equity mkts around the world in seeming euphoria, prompted partly by apparent early signs of improvements in the PRC economy n some commodoties experiencing a (tentative?) upturn, such as oil, rubber, palm oil, perhaps time to take a closer look at not only commodities, but also China related stocks - not the schips, but others with businesses in China, such as Global Logistics, where the px is around more than 2-yr lows, maybe?

Dow closes at 5-mo high financials jump

U.S. stocks closed 1 percent higher or more Wednesday, helped by gains in financial stocks following JP Morgan' s earnings beat and a rally overseas after encouraging China trade data.

" Earnings and China seem to be outweighing soft retail sales," said Terry Sandven, chief equity strategist at US Bank Wealth Management. He said the near-term bias for stocks is to approach the upper end of a trading range, " while the expectations are low and companies appear to be beating expectations. "

" I think it' s really just following the European bank stocks and ... weakness in the yen is also helping," said Peter Boockvar, chief market analyst at The Lindsey Group.

" We' re not rallying because things are good here. We' re rallying because some pressure points (from) January and February have eased up," he said, noting the gains have gone further than he expected and that " there' s a real test for the market around these levels. "

European stocks rose more than 2.5 percent, with the STOXX Europe 600 Bank index surging more than 6 percent.

Asian stocks jumped, with the Nikkei 225 up 2.8 percent. The Hang Seng surged nearly 3.2 percent and the Shanghai composite gained 1.4 percent.

In the first increase since June, China dollar-denominated exports rose 11.5 percent in March from the same period last year, recovering from a 25.4 percent drop in February. Imports fell a less-than-expected 7.6 percent in dollar-denominated terms and volumes of most major commodities, notably copper and iron ore, rose strongly, Reuters said. US crude oil futures for May delivery settled 0.97 percent higher, or 41 cents, at $ 41.76 a barrel.

Earlier, oil struggled for gains, briefly topping $ 42 a barrel to hit a fresh high for the year so far. Weekly crude oil inventories from the EIA showed a 6.6 million barrel build, while US production fell below 9 million barrels a day for the first time since late 2014.

Representatives of producing nations are set to meet on Sunday in Doha, Qatar, to discuss an output freeze.

Singapore stocks close in the black for 2016 after positive China export figures

A LARGE push on the banks on Wednesday helped propel the Straits Times Index (STI) up 75.76 points or 2.69 per cent into the black for 2016 at 2,890.41, after China reported that exports for March increased 11.5 per cent from a year earlier in dollar terms , rebounding from a 25 per cent plunge in February.

Turnover was 1.5 billion units worth S $ 1.4 billion, more than twice Tuesday' s S $ 664 million which was the lowest daily total this year. Excluding warrants, there were 276 rises versus 132 falls.

The STI is now eight points up for the year, only the second time it has been in positive territory for 2016.

Apart from banks, other big index gains came from Singapore Telecommunications, Keppel Corp, Sembcorp Industries and Sembcorp Marine.

Europe: Stock markets rise sharply at open

Europe' s main stock markets rallied at the start of trading on Wednesday, building on the previous day' s bumper gains that were sparked by surging oil prices.

Shanghai: Stocks rise to 3-month high on upbeat trade data

Stocks in Shanghai jumped more than 1 per cent to a three-month high on Wednesday, after better-than-expected Chinese trade data offered fresh signs that the economic slowdown was bottoming.

Energy and resource shares led the way as global oil prices surged to the highest level in 2016 in overnight trading, while commodity prices broadly rallied.

China' s March exports blew past analyst expectations, rising 11.5 per cent from a year earlier, the first increase since June and the largest rise since February 2015. Imports fell by 7.6 per cent from a year earlier, less than expected.

The trade data is " significantly higher than expected in March, which could continue to boost the risk sentiment in the short term," wrote Zhou Hao, economist at Commerzbank AG.

China' s trade data soothes growth fears, boosts markets

[BEIJING] China' s exports in March returned to growth for the first time in nine months, adding to further signs of stabilisation in the world' s second-largest economy that cheered regional investors.

March exports rose a blistering 11.5 per cent from a year earlier, customs data showed on Wednesday, the first increase since June and the largest percentage rise since Feb 2015.

Economists warned that the data was heavily influenced by base effects and seasonal distortions from the Lunar New Year, and was not necessarily evidence of stronger global demand. Chinese investors celebrated, nevertheless, with key stock indexes hitting three-month highs and the yuan firming.

" China' s foreign trade sector will likely improve from last year due to low comparables, but the improvement will not be dramatic, as the trends in external markets are not great," said Wang Tie Shi, economist with Industrial Securities.

" We' ve started to see improvement in PMI and other indicators, which points to some degree of recovery going into the second quarter."

Hong Kong Stocks Set to Rebound on Oil Price Strength

Rising confidence around a recent surge in oil prices and expectations for improving China trade data will be the key drivers Wednesday for the Hong Kong market.

Traders seem to feel optimistic, given that Hang Seng Index futures are up 1.2% in the morning. " The key release in the Asian session will be China' s trade data," says IG, an Australian brokerage, in a note.

" But given the big moves in commodities, some fundamental evidence showing that Chinese imports have picked up alongside their Q1 fiscal stimulus should help provide some support to the recent gains we have seen."

Asia set for higher open following US gains

Futures pointed to a higher open for Asian markets on Wednesday, after a rise in oil prices powered gains in U.S. equities overnight.

Oil prices advanced overnight, with Brent futures adding 4.3 percent to $ 44.69 a barrel, while U.S. crude futures advanced 4.48 percent to $ 42.17.

Markets in South Korea and Thailand are closed today, while China is expected to release its March trade data.
