All bets are off . If both decide to dump tariffs on each other , we can all kiss our money goodbye . There will definitely a global recession as based on economic model, we will likely see STI at 2500 and Dow at 20000. My opinion : Trump desperately needs a a good set of economy to give himself a good chance of getting re-elected . He needs at least 2Qtr to allow the policy to take effect and boost employment . By going into a tariff war with China , he is choosing a path of destruction for himself. Americans will feel the pain when imported goods become too expensive as Chinese exporters will definitely pass the tariffs to American consumers. There won?t be enough turn around time for Americans to look for alternative import market . In fact the truth is even after the 25% tariff , the Chinese goods are still considered relatively cheap but will definitely hurt American pockets . I don?t think Trump will take this risk , it?s simply too much for him . He can not afford the trade war and I expect a last minute U turn on both parties to seek a resolution . China will not want to be a pushover but Trump doesn?t want to look weak so I think a give and take solution will eventually prevail. If China is not interested in reaching a deal , there?s no point Liu He makes the trip to Washington. It?s just that the situation has reach the point where both are left with the last card and Beijing is calling Trumps bluff as he card has been exposed. China knows he could ill afford a trade war which will affect not just American consumers but also their own exporters like those Soy etc .
