Asia set for mostly higher open ahead of China data deluge 32 Mins Ago Futures pointed to a higher open for Asian markets on Friday, following another record close in U.S. stocks, and as investors brace for a data deluge from China. Australia' s SPI futures were up 0.1 percent at 5,389, compared to the ASX 200' s last close at 5,411.61. Nikkei futures in Chicago were down 0.12 percent at 16,595, while Osaka futures added 0.61 percent to 16,500. The Japanese benchmark index finished Thursday at 16,385.89. " The Asian session is set to be dominated by the big Chinese release of gross domestic product (GDP), industrial production, retail sales and fixed asset investment," said Angus Nicholson, a market analyst at brokerage IG. Ahead of the data dump in the world' s second-largest economy, Chinese premier Li Keqiang said this week the country' s economy was " basically stable" , after suggesting on July 4 it was " not easy" to achieve the first quarter' s 6.7 percent growth rate. Analysts are looking for more downside than upside in the three months to June 30. Elsewhere, the Singapore Exchange (SGX) said its securities market would open as normal on Friday, following a market disruption the day before. On Thursday, a technical glitch affected the SGX' s trade confirmation processes during mid-morning trade and the market was put into an " adjust phase," where orders were allowed to be placed, removed or amended but no matching took place. |

A truck crashed into a crowd of people celebrating Bastille Day in Nice, France, on July 14, killing at least 73 and injuring at least 100, said CNN and UK Express, citing French television. ?There were dead bodies everywhere,? a witness told ITV, a British television network.
Other media accounts reported 60 dead or more than 70 dead, but the death toll ? which increased when a gunman alighted from the truck and started shooting ? kept climbing. CNN is reporting the occupants of the truck exchanged gunfire with police. It is not known if anyone else was shot. UK Express cited French TV channel iTele, saying that a gunman was ?holed up in a nice restaurant downtown? but has been ?neutralized? by police. Photos and videos posted on social media show bodies lying in the street and there were immediate reports of dozens injured. |

Dow closes up triple digits at record, first 5-day win streak since March U.S. equities closed at new record levels Thursday after the Bank of England hinted at looser monetary policy next month and as earnings season kicked into full gear. The Dow Jones industrial average closed at an all-time high for the third consecutive day, ending the day up 134.2 points, with Goldman Sachs, IBM and Apple contributing the most gains. Earlier, the blue-chips index rose more than 160 points. The S& P 500 had its fourth consecutive record close, ending half a percent higher, led by financials. The Nasdaq composite had its sixth positive day of gains in seven, closing half a percent higher as Apple shares gained more than 2 percent. " Clearly, you' re getting a positive stimulus from [the BOE and earnings]," said Randy Frederick, managing director of trading and derivati ves at Charles Schwab. " The market always tends to move ahead of these thing, and that' s why I think you' ve seen the move higher over the past couple of days." The United Kingdom' s central bank kept interest rates unchanged, while market consensus was for a 25 basis point rate cut to 0.25 percent, which would' ve been the bank' s first move since 2009. " I certainly think the Bank of England did the right thing by keeping their powder dry. If they need to ease, they can do it," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at BMO Private Bank. The BOE' s meeting minutes said: " In the absence of a further worsening in the trade-off between supporting growth and returning inflation to target on a sustainable basis, most members of the committee expect monetary policy to be loosene I think what they' re trying to do is keep the markets calm," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at First Standard Financial. " The message is that it' s business as usual. That' s not to say they won' t do anything [soon ]." Oil prices bounced back on Thursday, with U.S. crude settling 2.08 percent higher at $45.68 a barrel, a day after closing more than 4 percent lower. European shares rose broadly, with the Stoxx 600 index advancing 0.8 percent. Asian equities also gained, as Japan' s Nikkei 225 rose 0.95 percent. Gold futures for August delivery settled $11.40 lower at $1,332.20 per ounce. Read more....   |

Straits Times Index 2,906.92   -0.13%   -3.73

Singapore shares hardly trade as SGX' s system fails in the morning A LENGTHY trading suspension from 11.38am until the end of the day, caused by a computer glitch, provided the main talking point in Thursday' s session. As a result, turnover amounted to just 539 million units worth S $ 335.2 million, about one-third recent averages. At the time of the breakdown, the Straits Times Index had dropped 3.73 points to 2,906.92. Brokers said the system started experiencing problems in mid-morning and finally went offline at 11.38am, at which time Singapore Exchange (SGX) said orders can be entered, taken out or amended but could be matched only when the market reopened. A second update sent an hour later said the securities market had been put in " adjust phase at 1138 hours due to duplicate trade confirmation messages being generated" and that " no duplicate trades were executed" . It added that trading was expected to resume at 2pm . this however did not occur After another update which said trading would restart at 4pm, the exchange at 4.1pm said the market would be closed for the day. Comments from brokers were understandably critical and scathing, though some could see the funny side.   |

Asia markets set for higher open as US crawls to new records 55 Mins Ago Futures pointed to a mostly higher open for Asian markets on Thursday, after U.S. stocks closed near the flatline but still managed to make it further into record territory. Australia' s SPI futures traded up 0.1 percent at 5,357, only a touch lower than the ASX 200' s previous close at 5,388.53. Nikkei futures in Chicago were down 0.12 percent at 16,405 while Osaka futures were up 0.55 percent at 16,320. The Japanese benchmark index closed at 16,231.43 on Wednesday. Analysts said markets appeared " pretty comfortable" with Theresa May as the new prime minister of the UK, taking over from David Cameron. Markets will also focus on the Bank of England' s monetary policy decision, due Thursday. A Reuters poll predicted the central bank to cut its bank rate by 25 basis points. Asian Indexes

Dow notches 4-day winning streak, closes at record high U.S. stocks closed near the flatline Wednesday but managed to eke further into record territory. The Dow Jones industrial average closed about 24 points higher, at an all-time high, and notching a four-day winning streak. The S & P 500 set all-time intraday highs, along with the Dow shortly after the open, and closed barely above the flatline. The Nasdaq composite lagged, closing about 17 points lower. " I think what we' re seeing here is the market taking a breather," said Mike Bailey, director of research at FBB Capital Partners. " Think about the massive move we' ve had over a very short period of time," said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at Wunderlich Securities. " We' ve has a 7.5 percent move off the lows. ... Eventually, that' s going to run out of steam. " Earnings season unofficially began Monday, with Alcoa posting better-than-expected results on both the top and bottom lines. On Thursday and Friday, financial giants BlackRock, JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup and Wells Fargo will report their quarterly results. The Federal Reserve released the latest edition of its Beige Book, which said economic activity in most regions increased at a modest pace. " It had something for everybody," Janney' s Luschini said, noting that it showed the economy was growing steadily, but not at a pace where the Fed would feel comfortable raising rates in the near future. The Fed speakers' parade will also continue Wednesday, with Philadelphia Fed Patrick Harker scheduled to speak after the market closes. Dallas Fed President Robert Kaplan said Wednesday morning he expects " slow" GDP growth in the U.S., adding the central bank is " very sensitive" to the dollar' s strength. On Tuesday, Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari said the U.S. central bank should not be in a rush to raise interest rates. Oil fell Wednesday, with U.S. crude settling at a two-month low of $ 44.75 a barrel. Weighing on crude were U.S. inventories data, which showed crude stocks fall by 2.54 million last week, as well as a build of 1.2 million gasoline barrels. " When we were going from $ 30 to $ 25, oil and stocks were keenly correlated," Wunderlich' s Hogan said. " Now with oil around $ 45 to $ 50, you can see oil having a bad day ans not adversely affect stocks." European equities traded slightly lower on Wednesday, with the pan-European Stoxx 600 index slipping about 0.1 percent. Asian stocks rose broadly, with the Nikkei 225 gaining about 0.8 percent. Gold futures for August delivery settled $ 8.30 higher at $ 1,343.60 per ounce. Read more....   |
