Agree, zero contingency planning. If the same happened in early morning, the loss in productivity will be significant .

There seems to be two issues of pain.  Management of the MRT n management of the stock mkt.

I think it should not just fine the co as a whole. Should also fine the top management and cut their pay. Make them wake up.

No amount of fine by govt will do justice to commuters inconvenienced and spent extra money on cab etc.
The best form of compensation is direct to affected commuter with cash top-up based on entry and exit times recorded in the transit link card. What amount is reasonable and significant ? I think $50 per commuter cos 50 is a magic no this year. |

It goes into govt revenue.  If I recall correctly, part of the money is channelled into transport vouchers for lneedy.  Anyone else can verify this?

Actually, they shd tie the CEO' s annual remuneration package to a formula with a breakdwon component.    Commuters are  being terribly inconvenienced time n time again while the CEO  continues to enjoy fat salary increase every yr.

If the fine is in the millions, shorter term it will impact the qtr revenue.   The Transport Council will also NOT allow them to raise the fare if they CANNOT meet certain service level or train up time.

i dont think it will affect the share price much anyway.. it' s just another breakdown as always.. they are not losing big money ' cos of breakdown.. but commuters are, for those who have to take the cab instead of mrt.. even if they kenna fine, it will be covered eventually by rising fares..

the dividend also cannot help this counter liao... it' s going to be painful tomorrow... and this week for SMRT probably.. stock and company wise.. probably you will hear lui tuck yew again... and recently got SMRT CEO get 2million dollars pay... say good bye to him, most likely he will kanna chop probably, as in chop as in ask to go. get 2 million pay for nothing, not even look into the disaster recovery side of SMRT. simply say i got a lot of qualifications and can be SMRT CEO. probably sit around entertain the board and do nothing to improve. |

Alas, if it was not listeed, then it will not even be audited. Adds up to more mysery. Being listed tells you of CEO pay (which can be hidden otherwise), then how would one rant about it? Being listed, unhappy peoply could sell out the stocks. But then charity begins at home. Who would sell a listed monopolistic cash cow? When everything runs as a bizness then why not SGX or SMRT. Any brilliant choice besides getting chopped on the board?

We can find many listed utilities companies in North American that pay consistently 4 to 6% dividend every year. Their CEOs are being judged by their ability to minimise operations costs and maximise returns to investors, or else will be booted out. For such type of business, with constant stream of revenue and predictable operating costs, they dont need special talents like those in Silicon Valley to create buzz. They just need experienced and good administrators to sustain the business and distribute the profit back to the masses. SMRT is supposed to be run like these utilities companies. If SMRT was listed in the US and giving 2% dividend, I bet the colonel will have a tough time facing the press and the investors

unfortunately, smrt, like quite a lot of over-value blue chips that become over-value thanks to the sgx small lots policy & MTP rule which divert interest & liquidity to blue-chips, give little dividends.. smrt has 2% dividend yield.. the fare hike doesnt hurt us too much since most of us are not low income group ppl.. but the inconvenience it caused when train delay/breakdown is the one that is troubling.. for instance, i commute to work everyday by train.. every week i experience train delay on my way to work.. every mth, i have to take cab about 4-5 times per mth ' cos i miss my company shuttle bus ' cos train moving slowly.. each fare cab is about 13bucks.. 5 times will be 65 bucks per mth.. 1 yr will be 780bucks of cab fare.. smrt give 2% dividend.. to breakeven this 780 bucks using dividend, i need to own 24k smrt shares.. this is provided there wont be capital loss from share price going down.. i rather put my money to some other counters that yield much more dividend.. the ceo pay rise can be used to feed 1000 smrt workers with 100bucks mthly pay rise, which can translate to about 2-3% pay increment.. make 1 person happy only which i dunno what brilliant ideas the ceo come up with to get 1mil bucks pay rise..
