VOGUE: How the Ukraine war could boost the case for lab-grown diamonds The war in Ukraine led to the shutdown of one-third of the natural diamond industry, which is heavily reliant on Russian mines. Will lab-grown diamonds fill the gap? BY MILENA LAZAZZERA 18 May 2022 On the day Russia invaded Ukraine, about 40 per cent of the diamond market suddenly became off-limits for much of the industry. Alrosa, the Russian diamond mining company controlled by the Russian government and sanctioned by G7 nations following the invasion of Ukraine, was one of the industry&rsquo s biggest suppliers. Overnight, jewellery houses stopped sourcing diamonds from Russia. In April, Jean-Jacques Guiony, chief financial officer of LVMH, said the group was working hard to find new sources to replace Russia. The war has significantly affected the natural diamonds supply chain, increasing demand from other mining regions and contributing to price rises, already impacted by broader inflation. &ldquo Technically, I would say that Russian diamonds are not conflict diamonds, but many in the trade are now perceiving them that way,&rdquo says diamond analyst Paul Zimnisky. For proponents of lab-grown diamonds, this has presented a substantial opportunity to plug the gap. Lab-grown diamonds were on the rise before the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, with New York-based Zimnisky estimating global sales increased by 40 per cent last year &mdash representing nearly 10 per cent of total diamond jewellery sales. Zimnisky is now forecasting 20 per cent annual growth in lab-diamond jewellery sales through at least 2027. In October 2021, Zimnisky calculated that the output of lab-grown diamonds was close to 3 million carats, a significant growth from the few hundred thousand carats a year of only a few years ago. That&rsquo s still a very small figure compared to the 116 million carats of natural diamonds mined in 2021. Sourcing pressures Diamond cutters speak frankly about the problems of sourcing. &ldquo We are now facing tougher competition to source rough diamonds,&rdquo says Rajiv Mehta, director of Dimexon, one of the largest cutting facilities in India. &ldquo Major watch and jewellery brands that previously sourced from Russia are boycotting Russian diamonds and looking to switch to [diamonds from] Rio Tinto and De Beers, which means we are suddenly all competing for the same limited stock. So naturally, this means that prices of non-Russian rough diamonds have inflated as demand increases.&rdquo It takes a while for higher prices of rough diamonds to translate into higher retail prices. However, the inflationary pressures on economies worldwide have already prompted consumers to squeeze their discretionary spending, says analyst Zimnisky. &ldquo Economic conditions will ultimately impact diamond sales,&rdquo he says. &ldquo I think we will begin to see confirmation of a slowdown when jewellers report calendar Q2 results.&rdquo Website 77diamonds.com, which sells both natural and lab-grown diamonds, has seen a dramatic increase in sales of man-made stones over recent years, now accounting for more than 25 per cent of its business, according to managing director Tobias Kormind. He observes that while it is predominantly a younger generation of customers who are attracted to lab-grown diamonds, more traditional buyers are won over when they &ldquo realise they can purchase a 1.5 or 2.0-carat lab-grown for the price of a natural 0.70-carat diamond. That&rsquo s spectacularly different in size&rdquo . The lab-grown diamond marketing narrative, with its laser focus on sustainability and ethical standards, has struck a chord with consumers &mdash despite miners and trade regulators arguing many of the lab-grown diamond lobby claims are exaggerated or unproven. In a world sensitive to environmental issues and pressures, the case for lab-grown diamonds may well continue to find traction, particularly with the young. Where will lab-grown diamond jewellery see growth? Erwan Rambourg, global co-head of consumer and retail equity research at HSBC, is confident that sales of lab-grown diamond jewellery will continue to grow, with even the likes of Cartier and Bulgari likely to use lab-grown diamonds for entry-level pieces in future. Tag Heuer CEO Fré dé ric Arnault spoke to Vogue Business in April about the potential of lab-grown diamonds, featured on Tag Heuer&rsquo s new Carrera Plasma watch. &ldquo It&rsquo s not about replacing traditional diamonds with lab-grown diamonds,&rdquo he said. &ldquo We use what&rsquo s different and inherent to this technology, allowing us new shapes and textures.&rdquo According to data from Vrai, a jewellery brand owned by US lab-grown diamond producer Diamond Foundry, lab-grown diamond jewellery typically sells at prices 30 per cent less than natural diamond counterparts. Vrai has a strong customer base in the 20 to 25-year-olds demographic. &ldquo Bridal is a big area influencing purchases,&rdquo says Mona Akhavi, CEO of Vrai. She also references a 2022 MVEye marketing study which found that 70 per cent of millennials would consider buying a lab-grown diamond for an engagement ring. Lab-grown diamonds have interested young designers in particular. Brands using lab-grown diamonds exclusively have burgeoned, including Kimaï , which has been worn by Meghan Markle. Also exploring the potential of lab-grown diamonds are newly relaunched heritage brands Vever and Oscar Massin as well as Courbet in Place Vendô me, the epicentre of jewellery in Paris. A brand such as Vrai, which has its own cutters and sources diamonds entirely from owner Diamond Foundry, is able to cut out all middleman markups. In a sector where a diamond can change hands up to 20 times, that&rsquo s a big deal &mdash and frees up more budget for marketing. Image may contain Human Person Jewelry Accessories Accessory Ring and Finger Vever was founded in 1821 and is best known for its Art Nouveau designs. Photo: Luna Esquer/Vever All that said, natural diamonds continue to dominate the highest-priced products in the diamond jewellery market &mdash being more likely to retain value, and commanding higher prices through being set in high jewellery and sold at auction. Tobias Kormind of 77diamonds.com highlights the continued investment potential of natural diamonds, illustrated by the spike in interest in large loose diamonds at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic &mdash and in the weeks following the outbreak of the Ukraine war. Although lab-grown diamonds are building momentum, they are unlikely to fill the gap in diamond supply just yet. The gulf between lab-grown and mined diamonds markets may even be accentuated by recent world events. As Rajiv Mehta puts it: &ldquo There is a place for both lab-grown diamonds and natural diamonds in the jewellery industry. The two can co-exist as each category meets the needs of parallel market requirements.&rdquo |

Lab grown diamonds are not new in Singapore. Some Jewellers have started promotingf as early as 2019.  Some even go into production. However producers are small. Hopefully Metech JV can be a major producer . No matter how Metech must come out with the latest developments. We are reading updates mainly from Xdiamond. |
