It?s almost like telcos in India were waiting for this moment. On 7 July, the country?s telecom regulator, Trai, issued a consultation paper examining the need for a collaborative framework between telcos and OTTs, which includes addressing regulatory mechanisms and selective bans. Seizing this chance, the telcos started building a case to get Big Tech to pay a network-usage fee. Telcos want the likes of Google and Meta, which use maximum network, to pay ?fair? charges. Not only does this allegedly nullify the principles of net neutrality?hard-won digital freedom, but it is also a curious demand given that it is this traffic that brings in most revenues for the telcos. What telcos have going for them is precedent. In 2020, South Korea introduced a ?Netflix law? mandating content companies with over 1 million daily users and 1% network traffic to engage with telcos and mutually decide on a usage charge. If this suggestion turns into a law, internet giants? India arms could potentially be shelling out millions of dollars. This is going to be a protracted campaign that will play out over the coming months, and the government will likely make a move only after the 2024 General Elections, as per all the insights gathered by Pratap, the author of the story. |
